In November our congregation was honored to nominate our own Vicki Chessin for the 2017 MUUSJN Social Justice Activist Award. You can read our nomination letter here.
Your Social Justice Coordinating Team would like to suggest that your donations in the holiday and end-of-year giving season be given to meet local, national, and global needs with a focus on advocacy for change locally, nationally, and internationally for global justice and peace. We believe that our donations should not only provide balm for the wounds of injustice but also should change the conditions that create injustice and poverty. We have created a document with further information and some suggested organizations that support justice.
Thank you to all who made our Community Justice Party such a great success! Our Social Justice Coordinating Team did a great job planning and preparing it – Norma Bailey, Joyce Henricks, Jen Prout, Janis Shinn and Katie Zapoluch – including our new Can You Guess the Social Activist? competition! So many people participated with their talents – Norma Bailey, Kevin Daum, Irv Irvine, Abi and Mel Bailey, Annette Pratt, Dawn Daniels, Susan Paton, Candi Tomlinson, Stacey Pattison, Cynthia Damer, Elle Daum and friend Maggie, Carolina Gutierrez, Guy Newland, Katie Zapoluch, Victoria Sladek, Laura McBride, and Aaron Jones (for his technical contribution). Thank you to all of you! And the cake walk was raucous and a hit for young and old alike! As well, we have $333.95 to send to MUUSJN as a donation from the attendees and the cake walk! Special thanks to Kris Los for the photos!
Please plan to attend our second bi-annual Community Justice Party on Saturday, October 21 from 7-9 pm. There will be a program in the sanctuary of music, skits, poetry, and activities highlighting several social justice issues, and then we will meet in the fellowship hall for light refreshments and a rousing cake walk (cake walk tickets 25 cents each, so bring lots of quarters)! The suggested donation for adults is $5.00 (although more will gratefully be accepted for MUUSJN), and children are free, with child care provided if you will let Norma Bailey (989.560.3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu) know that it is needed by Sunday, October 15.
Cake Walk If you are willing to provide a cake for the cake walk part of the Social Justice Party on Saturday, October 21, Please contact Joyce Henricks (Joyce.henricks@cmich.edu; 989-400- 9743). The Social Justice Coordinating Team is announcing the date for this year’s Community Justice Party –Saturday evening, October 21 - put it on your calendar! More information to follow.
