Our November read is Geraldine Brooks’ Year of Wonders. “It’s 1666 and an isolated island quarantines itself in an attempt to stop the spread of the bubonic plague. This historical novel shows how good people turn on each other as death takes its toll. Ignorance and hatred soon become as deadly as the disease itself.” We meet 2nd Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the UU Center, September through June. Bring a lunch and enjoy the discussion!
The book club has changed our meeting day and time. Starting in October we will be meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM in the Fellowship hall. The October selection is March by Geraldine Brooks. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. Sue Monk Kidd said, “filled with love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man,” it tells of Louisa May Alcott's father's experience as an Union Army chaplain.
Come join us on the 3rd Wednesday of September at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall. We will be discussing J. D. Vance's memoir Hillbilly Elegy. He gives the reader his personal perspective of growing up in Appalachia and how this affected the choices he made.
The UUFCM book club meets at the fellowship hall the third Wednesday of each month at 12:30 pm. The next book we are reading is a historical mystery by C. J. Sansom titled Dissolution. As Henry the VIII seeks to solidify his position as Supreme Head of the church, he directs Thomas Cromwell to close the monasteries across England. One of Cromwell's commissioners is murdered and Cromwell wants to know by whom and why. Bring a lunch and join us June 19th at 12:30 for a lively discussion.
The book club voted on our next read. It is the award winning book “The Sparrow” by Mary Doria Russell. Is it science fiction or a philosophical genre? Nancy Pearl summarizes as " the nature of good and evil. What happens when a man tries to do the right thing, for the right reasons and ends up causing incalculable harm." Come join us May 22nd at 12:30 and bring your lunch.
Normally we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month but for this month only we will meet on the 4th Wednesday. |
