As part of our efforts to support environmental issues, the Social Justice Coordinating Team encourages you to become supporters/members of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy. The Conservancy has permanently protected over 5,300 acres of critical wildlife habitat, natural space and quiet places to explore. These places preserve air and water quality, provide a setting for outdoor recreational opportunities and protect habitat for hundreds of wildlife species. There are 22 preserves and natural areas within short driving distance of Mt. Pleasant – great places for quiet contemplation and sharing with our children. Visit their website for further information, including membership. |
The Social Justice Coordinating Team would like to encourage you to participate in the Great Lakes Plastic Pollutions Solution Coalition’s challenge for a plastic-free July. Much to learn and ways to act! See the Plastic Free July 2021 calendar.
Want to do something good for you and the climate? Join the Sierra Club’s New Year 1.5 Challenge to commit to 1.5 miles or a 15-minute workout of your choosing each day.
When you join, you get access to Team Sierra’s Facebook community, a calendar to track and plan your activity, information on how you can be a part of the climate solution, and you'll be funding initiatives to protect our planet. Registration is a $35 donation, and creating a fundraising page is optional. Sierra Club has set a goal to raise $15,000 to support their’s climate initiatives, creating awareness and policy to put this change into action. Why 1.5? The UN's 2018 report stated that temperature increases must be kept under 1.5°C to avert the most devastating effects of the climate crisis. 2020 was the end of the hottest decade on record, according to the UN. We must make changes in the way we live, from where we get our energy to how we get from place to place. |
