Thank You!

A big thanks to Jennifer Davis for keeping the front of the building trimmed and beautiful all summer long!

"With the national election a little more than two months away, many of us are on edge emotionally, torn between fear and hope about the outcome. Let’s take time this Sunday morning to consider the spiritual wisdom available to us related to elections and governing; and let’s dedicate ourselves to finding the right balance between self-care and action.'

Minister’s Column

On Saturday, the Board of Trustees had its annual retreat. Monica Jean graciously hosted us at her cabin in Canadian Lakes, where eight of us gathered from 9:00-4:00, seated in a circle in the shade on a beautiful summer day. As morning turned to afternoon, the sound of pontoon boats and jet-skis punctuated our conversation; Monica’s dogs made their rounds, befriending the board members and the minister.

Come Get in “Good Trouble” with Us (John Lewis)!

The Social Justice Coordinating Team invites you to join them in supporting our 5th UU principle of affirming and promoting the democratic process by participating in our letter-writing parties. Working with Vote Forward, we will write letters to citizens in underrepresented communities in Michigan encouraging them to vote in this important election cycle.

All you need to do is come to one or more of our 44 letter-writing parties (see schedule here) –to write a brief statement about why you vote! They will provide the instructions, letters, envelopes, stamps, pens – and lemonade! Come join us to be energized by being part of an engaged community living out our values – making “good trouble!”

Michigan UUs Unite: Fifty for Justice!

UUs are known to be justice-seeking people. It takes many of us working together to achieve the goal of freedom and equity for all. The Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) leverages expertise and resources to support this work for member congregations and fellowships across our state and gives UUs a larger voice among partners, allies, and justice-makers. Become a supporting member today and help foster this collaboration. We need 50 of you (or more!) to reach our new member goal. Go to uujustice.org; click “Become a Member” and make a donation today.

Minister’s Column

Today I traveled to Brighton, Michigan for an anti-racist event hosted by the Unitarian Universalist congregation there. It was held in response to a disturbing event on Saturday, when members of a white supremacist group demonstrated in the city. According to local news reports, a similar event occurred recently in nearby Howell, with the group chanting “We love Hitler! We love Trump!”

Veggies Picked and Delivered!

On Saturday, August 17, several Youth RE families headed out to the “farm” of George Lentz to pick veggies to donate. We picked tomatoes, chard, cabbages, and peppers galore (!) as well as apples and pears, filled two cars with boxes of produce to donate, and then enjoyed snacks as we visited with George and each other. Thanks to George for welcoming us and to our pickers – Aaron, Katie, and Felix Jones, Ben, Carla, and Isla Jensen, Derrick Moore, Monica and Tillie Jean, and Norma Bailey. All the veggies were delivered to the Food Pantry at the Strickler Center where it will be shared with the Soup Kitchen.

Crafty UU Group

If you like to do crafts, come join the new Crafty UU Group which will meet on the third Fridays of each month at 10:30 am in the Fellowship Hall starting on September 20.  Bring your craft to work on and enjoy socializing with other creative people.  All types of crafting are welcome.  Contact Nancy Roeder ([email protected]) or Mary Anne Kryscio ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

Movie Night - THIS Saturday, August 24

Six and a half years ago, Frank Adler was a carefree bachelor and a philosophy professor. When his sister passed away, Frank took custody of his 6-month-old niece, Mary. He gave up his previous life, moved to Florida, and became a mechanic, always showering Mary with unconditional love.

As Mary grows older, Frank realizes she has no friends and sends her to school. When the school discovers that Mary is gifted, the normal life Frank is determined to provide her is turned upside down. The principal sees Mary as a tool for recognition, and her absentee grandmother views her as a feather in her cap.

Will Frank's unconditional love for Mary withstand the pressures and challenges of conditional love? Join us on Saturday, August 24, at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall when we watch "Gifted" to find out!

Welcome to UU Orientation – THIS Sunday, August 25

Minister’s Column

On Saturday I was watching the Olympics with my wife and sister-in-law, and I was moved by a race on the track and the story behind it. Often I focus on the athletes from the USA—as does the network covering the games. (An American network whose first audience is American, this makes sense.) This story, however, was about a runner from Kenya, Faith Kipyegon, and her attempt to win her event for the third Olympics in a row.

We meet on the 3rd Monday from 7:00-9:00pm in the UUFCM social hall and have fun with a variety of games decided by consensus. It is a great opportunity to learn new games and meet people with similar interests! Questions? Contact James Scott ([email protected]).

Movie Night - Saturday, August 24

Hospitality Training Session - Saturday, September 14

Are you looking to participate more in our faith community but have limited time? The Hospitality Team is a great place to start! There are no meetings to attend—just a commitment on Sundays to be among the first to welcome our visitors, friends, and members.

Interested in learning more about becoming a greeter, pre-service host, post-service host, or refreshment provider? Join us for a training session on Saturday, September 14, from 10:00am-11:30am at the church. Please let Gisela know or sign up here so we can plan accordingly.

First Friday Potluck – This Friday, August 2

Please join us in the UUFCM Fellowship Hall at 6:30pm (doors open at 6:15) for food, conversation, and games! Coffee, hot tea, and water will be provided. If you are able, please bring a dish to pass.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, August 4, to worship with with Laura McBride as Worship Leader and Kurt Roeder, who will present a "Summer Reflection." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Welcome to summer! Summer worship will be different and somewhat shorter; we will still have a hymn, chalice lighting and extinguishing, sharing of joys and sorrows, and an offertory.  However, each Sunday a different member of the congregation will briefly reflect on one of the following prompts: “What I would have done differently in my life” OR “What I wish I would have known as a younger person,” and then we will open up discussion in response to their reflection.  We hope you will join us each Sunday for our summer worship series, which runs through August 11."

Rev. Drew will be off and will return August 12. Although regular office hours are suspended for the summer, you may still contact Drew with any urgent Fellowship business if needed, or with significant pastoral care needs. Texting 440-935-0129 is the best way to reach Rev. Drew.

August 6 Primary and Early Voting

A reminder that August 6 is the date of the Michigan Primary with polls open from 7:00am – 8:00pm.
  • Early voting will occur for nine days: July  27 – August 4.
    • Early voting for Mt. Pleasant and Union Township will take place 8:00am – 4:00pm at Powers Hall, Central Michigan University, on Washington Street.
    • Early voting for all other townships will take place 8:00am – 4:00pm at the Commission on Aging, on Lincoln Street.
  • The League of Women Voters provides www.vote411.org for information about candidates, ballot measures, your voter registration, your polling place, drop box location and more. To see the entire ballot for other areas of the county visit: https://www.isabellacounty.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Isabella-August-2024-OFFICIAL-V3B.pdf
  • Remember: when casting a vote in the August Primary, voters may only vote in one party column. If you decide to vote in the Democratic primary, you cannot cast a vote in the Republican primary - and vice-versa. If a vote is cast in both party's columns, the ballot will be invalidated.

Infant Pantry Collection – THIS Sunday, August 4

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Questions? Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; [email protected]). Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or [email protected] if you have questions.

We invite those of you who are interested to participate on Sunday, August 4. We hold the ritual promptly at 6:00pm, in hybrid format (in-person/Zoom).
