A Lovely Harvest Feast

Great thanks to Jen Prout for planning and providing a lovely harvest feast!  About 50 people enjoyed delicious food and good conversation!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 3, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Día de Los Muertos." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.
.

"This Sunday we perform our yearly ritual of honoring the ancestors. In keeping with the various traditions of All Souls Day, Samhain, and Día de Muertos, we take this day to remember those who have died and to welcome them as living spirits. What do we have to learn from the ancestors? How can we keep alive their memory and honor them?"

Minister’s Column

This Monday I spent my day off traveling to Ann Arbor to hear Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. After finding parking, I walked across the University of Michigan campus, filled with students and the unmistakable energy of a college in the middle of the fall semester. Getting close to the city park where the rally was held, I saw the line that stretched for many blocks—it took several minutes just to find the end of the line. In the next hour, I made new friends with those around me as the line snaked through the sidewalks of a beautiful Ann Arbor neighborhood in the afternoon light amid gorgeous fall colors.

CUUPs Samhain Ritual – November 3

CUUPs - Covenant of UU Pagans
Contact: Annette Pratt
Samhain (pronounced SAH-win) is a holiday known by another name - Halloween. The ancients believed this was the time of year when the veil between the living and those passed was the thinnest. It is a time to remember those who have passed before us and listen to their stories that still live on inside us. It is also the Pagan “new year” with death and birth being two sides of the same coin. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6:00pm.

Sleepy Time Yoga - Monday, November 4

Kelly Lawson is offering an evening of Yoga Nidra on Monday, November 4, 7:00-8:00pm in the UU sanctuary. Bring a yoga mat, blankets, pillows, or anything to get cozy. The evening is donation-based, and all donations will go to the renovations of the homeless shelter (ICRH).

Join Kelly for this gentle and restful practice of Yoga Nidra! The evening will begin with gentle movement before finding rest in Savasana (final resting pose) for a guided meditation.

Post-Election Gathering - Wednesday, November 6

Drop-in 10:00-5:00; Vigil 5:00-6:00
On the day after the election, we may be feeling tired, joyful, anxious, or something else. Chances are high that we will be waiting for results. UUFCM will be open for support and community starting at 10:00 am. If you need a prayer or a hug or someone to talk to, please stop by.

At 5:00 we will have a ceremony including praying for democracy and humanity, and allowing everyone to speak their hopes and fears aloud.

Boot Drive for Kids! - October 15-November 15

The Social Justice Coordinating Team (SJCT) is leading a Boot Drive for Kids to collect new and very gently used boots, any size, for school children and teens. The drive goes October 15-November 15, and the boots will be donated to Clothing, INC, in time for parents to get boots before winter hits. Please place them in the box provided in the Fellowship Hall by November 15. If you’re not a shopper, any member of the SJCT will be glad to shop for you!

November Theme: Repair

In our series of monthly themes addressed in Sunday worship, November calls us to reflect on Repair. An eight-page packet of activities, questions, poems, music, and spiritual practices related to Repair is available here.

A small group meets to discuss the theme and the packet on Thursday, November 21, at 5:30pm.

No More Open Cups in the Sanctuary

We are asking everyone to help us abide by a policy that we haven’t been enforcing recently. “Drink is permitted in the sanctuary during worship services as long as it is in closed containers.”

Starting this Sunday, if you get coffee, tea or water in a cup from the Fellowship Hall prior to the worship service and wish to take it into the sanctuary, please use the hot cups with a cover that we will provide.  Thanks for your help with this matter.

A Successful Outdoor Clean-Up

Much gratitude to Daniel Davis, Kirsten King, Darlene Ritchie, Jim Dealing, Gisela Moffit, Kurt Roeder, Mary Alsager, Drew Frantz, and James Scott for their efforts to clean up our grounds on Saturday! Thanks, too, to Norma Bailey for edging the sidewalks last week!  We raked (this will need to be done again), cleaned out flower beds, trimmed the lilacs, edged the sidewalks, trimmed the evergreen bushes, and put the hose to bed for the winter.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, October 27, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Deep Listening." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.
.

"Listening to other people is an important practice. Another form of listening is how we listen to Life–or some would say “to God.” What do the flowing river and the autumn trees tell us? What does the flow of energy and vitality within us say? What does the voice of this nation with its many peoples say? In order to listen this deeply we must be still and we must open ourselves in new ways."

Minister’s Column

Just now I filled out my absentee ballot. Sitting with my wife at the dining room table, we made sure we were following the directions; we double-checked our research for the obscure down-ballot races and the non-partisan section. The ballots are sealed and will be dropped off tomorrow. As I write this, election day is two weeks away.

Thanks to Our Letter Writers! 750 Letters Sent!

Thanks to all of our writers who wrote letters to citizens in underrepresented communities in Michigan encouraging them to vote in this important election: Norma Bailey, Joyce Henricks, Kelly Lawson, Laura McBride, Drew Frantz, Beth Macleod, Dave Macleod, David Allan, Victoria Sladek, Alan Jackson, Katie Zapoluch, Jim Dealing, Liz Dealing, Joyce Riddick, Laurie Meadows, Mary Obuchowski, Janet Olson, Jenny Main, Mary Alsager, and Tom Moffit. We wrote and sent the 750 letters on Wednesday, October 2!

If you would yet like to write letters encouraging people to vote, contact Norma Bailey ([email protected]) for information. Also, see below for information about election outreach through UU the Vote.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, October 13, to worship with Guy Newland, who will present "A Budget is a Moral Document." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"How do we consider issues of justice as we use our resources––our time and our money?  The UUA calls on us to fight “racism and other oppressions.” Only racism can account for many gross distortions in American society. Yet the invention of race is rooted in economic exploitation that continues today, harming people of all races––and leaving almost half the folks in our Isabella County struggling to make ends meet."

Minister’s Column

In the Jewish tradition, these are the Days of Awe. The holiday of Rosh Hashanah was last week on October 2; Yom Kippur is October 11. The days in between are the time for reflection, as explained on the Wikipedia page for Yom Kippur: “During the Days of Awe, a Jew reflects on the year, goals, and past actions, how his or her behavior has possibly hurt others and seeks forgiveness for wrongs done against God and against other human beings.”

  • Clean-up (after the feast): Pitch in to wash dishes, put away chairs and tables, and return items to the church.
  • Bring a dish to pass:
    • Casseroles: Bring your favorite hearty dish!
    • Desserts: Yes, please—sweets are always welcome!

If you attend via Zoom and can’t sign up in person, feel free to call or text Jennifer Prout at 989-400-3130 with how you'd like to assist.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, October 6, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Bad Grammar." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Different groups of people have different ways of using words in speech and writing, reflecting differences in culture, class, location and education. While it is common for some of us to label these patterns of language as grammatically proper or improper, another perspective sees these variations as neither good nor bad. Rev. Drew will share his journey as a (former) English teacher learning more about English grammars, and about the human impulse to judge other people."

Minister’s Column

On Thursday afternoon I got the first inkling of the hurricane approaching and the impact it might have--so far south from my home in Michigan that it feels disconnected from my reality. I was on a Zoom call with other UU’s, and we were calling voters in Florida to support the abortion rights ballot amendment. Don’t worry, said the organizers of the call, we are not calling the part of Florida where people are evacuating ahead of the hurricane—we are calling voters on the other side of the state, hours from the storm’s path. It was during the next two days that I heard about the devastation in Asheville, North Carolina. I have family in Asheville—my brother-in-law Duncan—and I have visited there several times.
