Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, December 1, to worship with Jessica Jernigan, who will present "Be Where You Are." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Every Sunday, in this sanctuary, we are invited to be present—mindful of the moment, of each other, of ourselves. And our land acknowledgement calls us to remember the history of the space we occupy. What does it look like to develop a deeper sense of place? What can we learn when we are present to place?"

UUA Common Read

Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families

This book has been designated by the Unitarian Universalist Association as the “common read” for 2024-25. All UU congregations are encouraged to read and study this book. More information, including study guides and videos, can be found on the UUA website at:
https://www.uua.org/lifespan/curricula/read

Rev. Drew will lead a discussion of the book at a time to be announced. Depending on interest, discussions may be in a mixed group...or there may be a separate group for trans and nonbinary people and their families.

Ten copies of the book have been purchased for UUFCM, and they are in the fellowship hall. Your options include:
-       take a copy and keep it
-       borrow a copy and return it to the UUFCM library
-       purchase your own copy at the online UUA bookstore

Please let Rev. Drew know if you have any questions, or if you are interested in being part of the book discussion.

Now Hiring: Two Job Postings for UUFCM Religious Education

We are looking to hire two people for our religious education program. The Assistant position ($15 per hour, 2-3 hours per week) is available immediately. The Facilitator position ($16 per hour, up to 6 hours per week) is available January 1st, when our current facilitator Seally is leaving.

Per UUFCM policy, we do not normally hire from within the congregation. Please see the full job postings here. Applications and inquiries should go to Rev. Drew.

Choosing Where to Give: End-of-Year Donations 2024

In previous years, your Social Justice Coordinating Team has suggested that your donations in the holiday and end-of-year giving season be given to meet local, national, and global needs with a focus on advocacy for change locally, nationally, and internationally for global justice and peace.

This year, as a result of the state and national elections this fall, many of the organizations working for justice will need additional support to combat the efforts that are already being made to undo some of the protections that have been put in place for many years.

If you are interested in supporting any of these organizations, a list from your Social Justice Coordinating Team of organizations that support justice can be found here.

Give to CMU Public Media, Help the UUFCM!

We are once again collecting for CMU Public Media. In the fall, we pool our resources together in order to purchase airtime on CMU Public Radio. Depending on the amount gathered, we get 1-2 ads per week for a good part of the year. Please make your check to “UUFCM,” include in the memo line “for CMU Public Media” and give it to Mary Alsager at church by December 14. A single check for the total collected will be sent to CMU Public Media. Thank you in advance for contributing to this worthy effort – you are appreciated!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 24, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Gratitude." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"The Thanksgiving holiday represents gathering with family and naming what we are thankful for. On the other hand, it is associated with the horrific American history of colonialism and genocide. We hold these two truths in tension as we are called to honor the sovereignty and dignity of native tribe and to celebrate bounty and offer gratitude."

Minister’s Column

It is well-known that the 2016 election of Donald Trump caused a spike in attendance at UU congregations—often referred to among ministers as the “Trump Bump.” At the time, my seminary studies took me away from regular Sunday worship, so I did not experience this first-hand. Nonetheless, I knew that a Trump electoral victory in 2024 would similarly result in more new people attending UUFCM services. This has proven to be true the past two Sundays. More brand-new people, more people who attend occasionally, more people who have been away for years. I believe they come because they are trying to process the new moment in America and what it means; they come because they are seeking community with liberal and progressive people; they come because they are scared, angry or sad and need to be comforted. Some new people may be reading this column for the first time, having just signed up.

Movie Night - Saturday, November 23

The movie follows the story of Finn Bell, an aspiring artist from a humble background, whose life changes dramatically after a chance encounter with an escaped convict and a wealthy, eccentric woman. As Finn grows up, he finds himself drawn into a complicated world of ambition, romance, and betrayal—all while being haunted by a mysterious benefactor.

The film stars Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Bancroft, and Robert De Niro. Don't miss this chance to see how this modern version captures the essence of Dickens’ classic!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 17, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Guest at Your Table." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Guest at Your Table is a program of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee to partner with human rights organizations domestically and abroad. Minister’s Column

As I reflect on last week’s election, I am thinking about gender. I was truly expecting Kamala Harris to win on the strength of female voters. Instead, it feels like America is unwilling to elect a female president. We have re-elected a rampant misogynist in Donald Trump, and we have put a political party in power that keeps enacting absurdly strict anti-abortion laws. Taking these things together, I feel that the rights and dignity of women have been badly harmed by this election. As a man, I call on other men to speak out for the sake of protecting and honoring women.

Officiated by Rev. Drew Frantz
The purpose of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, held on November 20 every year since 1998, is to remember the people who have lost their lives this year due to anti-transgender violence. In this service we lament this injustice; we commit to working for the rights and dignity of transgender, gender-queer, and gender non-binary people everywhere; and we name our hopes for the lives they will live.

No More Open Cups in the Sanctuary

Starting this Sunday, if you get coffee, tea or water in a cup from the Fellowship Hall prior to the worship service and wish to take it into the sanctuary, please use the hot cups with a cover that we will provide.  Thanks for your help with this matter.

eNews for Thursday, November 7

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 10, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Repair." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.
.

"On this first Sunday following the 2024 election, we take stock of where we are now. Our journey towards a world of harmony and love and justice for all people has ups and downs, like a hike through a mountain range. What has been harmed or depleted by this contentious election? Has our individual mental or physical health suffered? Have our relationships with family and neighbors been broken? Has our capacity for civil public discourse been harmed? We gather in sacred community to seek repair individually and collectively."

Minister’s Column

This week I went to see a movie called “Conclave” which is in theaters now. In this fictional film focused on the election of a new pope, I found interesting parallels to Unitarian Universalist politics; to the national presidential election; and to the private vs. public life of clergy.

Read the column here.

Transgender Day of Remembrance - November 20

Officiated by Rev. Drew Frantz
The purpose of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, held on November 20 every year since 1998, is to remember the people who have lost their lives this year due to anti-transgender violence. In this service we lament this injustice; we commit to working for the rights and dignity of transgender, gender-queer, and gender non-binary people everywhere; and we name our hopes for the lives they will live. Join us Wednesday, November 20 at 6:00pm.

November Theme: Repair

In our series of monthly themes addressed in Sunday worship, November calls us to reflect on Repair. An eight-page packet of activities, questions, poems, music, and spiritual practices related to Repair is available here.

A small group meets to discuss the theme and the packet on Thursday, November 21, at 5:30pm.
