eNews for 10/14/15

10/14/2015

The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic
or the  pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one's very footsteps
may not  disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is
a perfect anodyne to the  restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it,
and if I were a bird I would  fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

~  George Eliot
Welcome New Members
Oh happy day! This past Sunday we celebrated the official welcoming of Brigitte Bechtold, Morghan Brassard, and Christopher Harvey as new members of this fellowship.  If you have not met these folks yet, please take the time to introduce yourself at the earliest opportunity. They are all very excited to be part of this community… and we are delighted that they are here!

In Worship
This Sunday, October 18, we continue our month-long exploration of hunger and longing with a service themed “The Hunger for Meaning.” This service will feature the world premiere of the choral composition “The Fourth Principle” by David Wolfson. If you missed either of the first two services in this series, the texts may be found on our Sermon Archive.

Get Involved!
Congregational Life Ministry Team is meeting Saturday, October 17 at 10 a.m. If you are looking for a way to be more involved in the life of the fellowship, consider coming to this meeting. We meet on the third Saturday of every month. If you have questions, please contact Laura McBride at 989.772.5512 or lmcbride010@gmail.com.

Fellowship Life Meeting - This Sunday!
On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

CROP Walk Donations Due
What a beautiful day for the CROP Hunger Walk held this past Sunday. Thank you to Mary Alsager and Mary McDonnell who both walked the walk representing our fellowship and to all of you who so generously donated to this cause. If you signed up to make a donation, but haven’t yet turned in your contribution, you need to do so within the next two weeks. And if you haven’t perchance made a donation yet – it’s not too late! The person tasked with taking donations will be announced at the opening of service on Sunday. Thank you!

Clean Up Day - Saturday, October 24
Grab your rakes and join us for a clean up day at UUFCM. We will be raking falling leaves into the street, clean up flower beds, visit, and eat together. We will be working Saturday, October 24, 10-4 pm. The more folks who come, the sooner we will be done. Lunch will be provided! Call Laura McBride if you have questions.

Common Read of Just Mercy – Discussion Groups Scheduled
If you’ve been procrastinating or are just behind in your reading, it’s time to step up the effort because our discussion groups for the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson have been scheduled. We are offering three different dates to choose from; the same two-hour session format will be repeated on each date (though if folks are wanting extended opportunities for discussion, we’ll play that by ear as we go along…). The dates are as follows:
  • Thursday, October 22 - 7-9:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 29 - 7-9:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 1 - 1-3:00 p.m.

Our minister, Dawn Daniels, will be facilitating the Thursday evening sessions. The Sunday session facilitator will be announced at a later date.

Black Lives Matter Community Forum
The next BlackLivesMatter community forum, sponsored by the Mt. Pleasant Area Diversity Group, is schedule for Tuesday, October 27 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Anspach 161 on CMU’s campus. Please join these vital discussions!

Read the WiRE!
WiRE is our new weekly newsletter about happenings in RE. Upcoming events and opportunities, what parents and youth need to know ahead of Sunday RE, and more can be found here on our website. This week includes updates on what to bring to RE this Sunday, the new teen/adult book group, and more…

Book Collection for Christmas Outreach
This year the UUFCM will be collecting children’s books – actually the range is pre-school through young adult – as our contribution to the Christmas Outreach program this year. If you would like to donate any new or very slightly used books to this effort, please contact Beth Macleod at 989.772.0595 or by email at macle1e@cmich.edu.
UUFCM T-shirts for Sale!
The social justice team has two t-shirts styles for sale. Our locally printed UUFCM shirts are $10, and the Standing on the Side of Love shirts are $20 and will be ordered by catalog. There are sample shirts in the Social Hall at the UUFCM. Orders and payments are due by Sunday, October 25. Please see, call, or text Jen Prout at 989-400-3130 with any questions.

The League of Women Voters of Michigan is hosting over 30 Town Halls across the state of Michigan this fall to educate voters on the importance of redistricting. The Mt. Pleasant meeting will be held at the Veterans Memorial Library Annex at 301 South University at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 20. The event is free and open to the public and all are welcome.
