Only in the darkness can you see the stars.
~ Martin Luther King Jr.
Please welcome new member Carol Rard as a trustee at large, in addition to Scott Daigle, Vicki Chessin, and Laura McBride renewing their board positions, too!
In Worship
For the month of May, we have journeyed with the worship theme of “Hope”. We close this Sunday, May 24, with “Hope? Hell, Yes! Part II.” The service will be led by Susan Powers and Norma Bailey. Please plan to attend!
Wondering about “Part I”? Read it here...

~ Willa Cather
UUFCM Garage Sale
The UUFCM garage sale will be held this week on Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 to 1:00 p.m. at 222 East Andre Avenue in Mt. Pleasant. If you have any questions, please contact Norma Bailey (989-560-3952 or [email protected]).
Piano for Sale
The lovely piano that sits in our social hall is for sale. It was donated to the church by Margaret Nash several years ago. Since we do not use it, we hope someone will! We are making it available to church members and friends first. We are asking $200 or best offer. Feel free to contact Laura McBride with questions or if you wish to look it over or play it.
Join the March for Social Justice!
Last year a number of us marched with our UUFCM banner in the Alma Highland Festival Parade supporting LGBT rights. If you would like to participate with us this Saturday, May 23, at 10:30 am, please contact Vicki Chessin (989-463-3076 or [email protected]) or Norma Bailey (989-560-3952 or [email protected]) to sign up!
First Friday Potluck Seeks Host!
The June potluck will soon be here and we are in need of someone to host the evening. If you are interested please contact Chris Bauerle at 989-330-8457 or [email protected]. The person(s) hosting the event chooses the food theme for the evening. There are also many people who attend regularly willing to help with all of the host’s duties. This is an enjoyable evening of food, fun, and fellowship for all.
Reproductive Justice Postcards for Paid Sick Leave
MUUSJN and its Interfaith Reproductive Justice Coalition are members of a coalition that is working to bring an important resource to Michigan families – paid sick leave. More than half of working mothers (54%) do not have paid sick days they need to care for themselves and their loved ones.
How you can make a difference: Collect signed postcards that will be sent to Michigan legislators. The goal is to collect 5,000 post cards by June 2nd. Norma Bailey and Joyce Henricks have the postcards for you to sign and also share with your neighbors and friends to get more signatures. If you were not in church on Sunday, May 2, contact Norma (989-560-3952 or [email protected]) or Joyce (989-773-4709 or [email protected]) to get postcards. Once collected, they will deliver them to MUUSJN who will then forward them to our legislators.
RE End of Year Picnic on June 7
All RE families and volunteers are invited to celebrate together at Chip-a-Waters Park immediately following service on June 7. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be provided. Please bring your favorite picnic sides to share. Please contact Roze Bentley (989-400-7674) with questions. Thank you to all of you for supporting RE and making it a successful program. We couldn't do it without you!
Thank You!
Sandy Wickstrom, Norma Bailey, Gisela Moffit, Roze & Justin Bently, Chiron, Taran, & Tolby, and Laura McBride for the window washing and painting that occurred May 9th. Our building is brighter and sparkling because of your efforts! Thanks to Chris Bailey for collecting a status report on the gutters, too!
From Mari Potter:
Hello, I need your help! I have been offered the opportunity to go to Nepal through Utopia Volunteers to help support victims of the earthquake at The Butterfly House Project and Early Childhood Development Center located in Kathmandu, Nepal. I plan to be in Nepal for the month of July. The focus of my trip is simple: I will be working with Pushpa Basnet, CNN Hero of 2012, with 48 children she supports and the ECDC/Butterfly House. Children in Nepal go to prison with their mothers if there are no other guardians. Pushpa gets the children out of prison and raises them until their mother is released. Pushpa and her children are currently sleeping under an abandoned greenhouse and are still extremely exposed to the elements.
One way to help is to assist me in raising the funds to make this trip to Nepal in July. The Utopia Foundation will be funding part of my trip. I am working to come up with travel expenses. To donate toward my travel expenses:
- Go to http://utopiavolunteers.org/giving/support-the-general-fund/
- Choose the amount you will donate
- The next page is the Checkout Form. On the RIGHT side of the Checkout Form you will see Additional Information. In the Notes box, please type: For Mari Potter Nepal Travel and relief fund.
Thank you in advance for your support with this cause.
