eNews for Thursday, November 11

Sunday Stroll

We had a beautiful day for our walk in Meridian Park! This is a weekly event and the location varies week to week. Join us next week at Sylvan Solace!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, November 14 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “A Pacifist Celebrates Veterans Day.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Unitarian Universalists elevate peace as a primary principle and denounce war and violence. Soldiers and military leaders see themselves as working for peace and security. The holiday of Veterans Day reminds us to honor the individuals who serve in the military and to commit to healing their wounds however we are able, separating policy opinions from human caring.”

COVID Update

  • We are continuing hybrid services (in- person/Zoom) throughout the month of November. If you signed up for in-person services in November, you should have received an email indicating which three services you’ve been assigned to attend and how to switch if you need to. Contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) if you’re unsure.
  • Right now, small groups up to ten people can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
While the Board of Trustees has approved policies for Fellowship gatherings as we seek to reconnect in person safely, please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Congregational Home Harvest Meals

Sunday, November 21 at 4pm
Sign up by November 14!

Given that we can’t gather in our traditional Harvest Feast this year, we are instead hosting Congregational Harvest Home Meals on Sunday, November 21, 2021, gathering at 4pm in various homes. We are encouraging all new members and friends, as well as “oldies,” to join us so that you can get to know some other people in the congregation. Please sign up for a home meal using this link.
We will gather in each home at 4pm, and Drew will join us via Zoom at 4:30 to briefly speak with all of us at the same time. We will also have our traditional Guest at Your Table (GAYT) plate collection at each home (Drew will explain).

The requirement for all home meals is that everyone attending must be vaccinated unless otherwise indicated.

Once a host has a full table, they will contact you asking you to help provide a side dish, salad, or dessert to complement the main dish, as well as letting you know contact information of who else will be at the home meal to make it easy to share rides if you wish.

If you have questions, please contact Norma Bailey (989.560.3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu.

Help with Dinners for Homeless Shelter

We have been asked by St. John’s church – our partner church for the homeless shelter – to provide meals for 25-30 guests on Tuesday, November 16, and Friday, November 19. We provide a main dish, side dishes, bread, and desserts. We already have a main dish for Tuesday – wonderful soups by Gisela Moffitt – and need side dishes: e.g., green vegetables, potatoes, bread, salad, dessert – be creative, whatever goes with soup!

Friday’s meal is open. We have a green bean casserole and need a main dish and side dishes.

If you are interested in providing something for these dinners, please contact Joyce Henricks (joyce.henricks@cmich.edu) for more information.

St. John’s is also asking for help with providing volunteers for the morning (8-9am), evening (7-10pm) and overnight shifts (either 10pm-3am or 3-7:30am). To sign up to help, go to www.icrhouse.org/volunteer. Contact Joyce if you have questions.

MUUSJN News: Voting Rights

Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network

Join our statewide nonpartisan event to demand the Senate pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021.

Get rid of the filibuster if that’s what it takes!

We are mobilizing with UUtheVote/Side With Love and the national Declaration for American Democracy Coalition’s Week of Action, “Freedom to Vote: Time to Act” – sign up now to join us!

When:    Saturday, November 13, 4:00 PM - 5pm ET
Where:   Zoom event, register here.

We can’t sit back and watch our voting rights be stripped away from us by extremist legislators across the country. The Freedom to Vote Act would ensure access to the ballot box, protect free and fair elections, and end partisan gerrymandering. Voting rights legislation has already passed the House and received 50 votes in the Senate to begin the process of passing the bill – and the only thing standing in our way is getting those same 50 votes to reform the antiquated filibuster.

Every single fight for the advancement of civil rights in our nation’s history has been met with resistance, requiring Americans to rise up to demand change. We can win this fight.
