OWL (Our Whole Lives)
Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a series of sexuality education curricula for six age groups that helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

You can find general information about the program at www.uua.org/re/owl;
or contact Norma Bailey (989-560-3952;
baile1nj@cmich.edu) for specific information.

Preschool (up to age 3)
This year our pre-schoolers will be engaging in the Chalice Children UU curricula. Chalice Children delves deep into our Unitarian Universalist faith. It strives not just to teach about our faith, but also to provide experiences around the strength of the community, the wonder and awe that transcend everyday understanding, and life issues we all share.

Young Elementary (ages 4-6)
Our young elementary students will be participating in the Love Surrounds Us curriculum. This program explores all the Principles in the context of Beloved Community of family/home, school, neighborhood. Participants engage in activities that emphasize the love they feel in community.

Youth (grades 2-6)
We are happy to announce that this year our youth will be delving into the magical world of Harry Potter with Harry and UU. Much like Harry did, we will be fighting Horcruxes, only these are not fragments of an evil person’s soul, but rather evil that our society faces. We will be using social action to fight the Horcruxes of Illiteracy, Poverty, Hunger, Sickness, Child Slavery, Animal Abuse, and Environmental Destruction.

Young Adults (grades 7-12)
This year our young adults will be given the choice to either stay in service, or make a commitment to participate as leaders in younger classes. They will also be partaking in a series of service projects lead by members of our community.

We are offering the curriculum for kindergarten and first grade this winter. The required parent meeting will be on Sunday, January 8, following service.

Sessions will be led by Laura McBride. Much more information will be provided at the required parent meeting. However, if you are interested and/or wish more information, please contact Anna VanArsdaleHoot at vanar1ae@cmich.edu.

Refreshments Notes:

  • This schedule is developed as a shared service to one another. Everyone gets an opportunity (or more) to bring a treat over the course of the year. If you have specific dates, please contact Laura McBride for the May-August 2015 schedule.
  • Please bring the equivalent of three-dozen servings of your refreshment and divide onto 5 plates or bowls for tables.
  • If you are assigned to bring a gluten free snack, please try your best to bring one. Gluten is in wheat. You could provide popcorn, potato chips, or a food made with gluten free flour. Please check the ingredients of whatever you buy to make sure it is gluten free.
  • If you prefer to bring a fruit/vegetable but are signed up for a salty or sweet snack, contact the person designated to bring fruit or vegetable to see if you may trade.
  • If the date you are assigned doesn’t work for you, please work out a trade with someone else or bring your item ahead of time and ask one of the other people on your refreshment date to set it up for you.
Thank you so much for your assistance!

What Does UUFCM Mean to You?

As part our stewardship drive this year, we asked several people why they were attracted to this faith community and why they are supporting it by generously giving of their time, talent and financial treasures. Enjoy reading the variety of responses, which reflect the diversity of our fellowship and ponder your own thoughts and feelings.

Stones on the Road
The somewhat irregular
(in frequency, focus and form) “minister's missive”
    by Dawn Daniels,
    UUFCM Minister

Yet I turn, I turn,
exulting somewhat,
with my will intact to go,
wherever I need to go,
and every stone on the road
precious to me.

~ Stanley Kunitz,
    from poem “The Layers”
