Like a welcome summer rain, humor may suddenly cleanse and
cool the earth, the air, and you.
~ Langston Hughes

Worship Matters

Please plan to join us for worship this coming Sunday, July 1 as we begin our Summer Worship Series “Sharing the Stories of Living Our Faith,” with a reflection titled “Coming Home” led by Laura McBride.

“Many paths are traveled on the way to Unitarian Universalism.”

~ Kathleen Montgomery

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

Summer Worship Series (July 1 – August 19)
Theme: Sharing the Stories of Living Our Faith

July 8: Service Leader: Norma Bailey
July 15: Service Leader: Norma Bailey

Minister’s Summer Schedule

Dawn will be attending General Assembly (GA) in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday through Sunday, June 24, and then taking a three-week vacation to visit her sons in Olympia, Washington. She will return to her ministerial duties on Tuesday, July 17. Pastoral care concerns in her absence should be directed
to our Arms Around team leader, Gisela Moffit (989-772-1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com).

Summer Worship Series Begins This Sunday, July 1

Our eight-week Summer Worship Series “Sharing the Stories of Living Our Faith” will run from Sunday, July 1 through Sunday, August 19. And as the theme suggests, we will be trying out a different format for this summer that is more interactive and relaxed in design. The biggest change will be the absence of a traditional sermon message – instead, either the worship facilitator for the morning or another designated person will share a brief story/reflection on the theme followed by guided discussion. All we ask is that you attend this summer with a willingness to go with the flow of trying something different! And yes…you will find the seating to be rearranged as well to accommodate this new format of shared reflection. We hope you will join us!

Summer RE Program Begins This Sunday, July 1!

This summer we are going to be exploring our connections with nature and the animals within it by learning about mythical creatures!

Many mythical creatures are directly related to the world around them as well as having religious connotations. We will be covering a variety of creatures, including Fairies, Brownies, Imps, Dragons (Eastern), Dragons (Western), Unicorns, Nymphs, and Elves.

We will also be tending the vegetable garden where we grow food to donate to the local soup kitchen.

Our design for summer RE is a little different from the school year model – we will not be joining the adults in worship but will be going directly to the RE room where we will light our chalice, read a story, participate in mindfulness practice, do an activity together, and then work in the garden if weather permits. The summer program will run from July 1 to August 19.

We need volunteers! The summer RE program relies on volunteers to help in the garden, assist with lessons, and provide nursery care as needed. We will need two people per Sunday, with no maximum number of Sundays you can volunteer for! Anna will have a sign up sheet available Sundays after service, or you can email her at vanar1ae@cmich.edu. Please let her know if you have any questions.

Infant Pantry Collection - July 1

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the checke out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Help Rename CLMT!

The Congregational Life Ministry Team (CLMT) made up of membership, Arms Around program, communication, stewardship, social fun, and building/grounds is looking for a new name! It's an unwieldy name for an interesting group of programs. We are collecting suggestions for renaming this team. A prize for the name selected will be given. Please send your suggestions to Gisela Moffit, Team Leader at gbmoffit@gmail.com. Names will be collected until this Saturday, June 30 and chosen at the July CLMT meeting.

First Friday Potluck - Friday, July 6

Join us next Friday for our July First Friday communal nosh! Annette Pratt will be our host, and the theme is Summertime Picnic. We will also be celebrating the July birthdays of Guy Newland, Terry Tribe, Norma Bailey, Janet Simon, James Hatcher, Sharon Rust, and Steve Lifson. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Scrap Metal Drive - July 1-14

You may bring your items to Laura McBride's home where the trailer is located or, if your items are too large, the trailer will be brought to you! Please contact Laura at 989-772-5512 to work out details. The money is put into a fund for leadership development opportunities. Central Michigan Recyclers accepts small and large appliances, various metals, and wire. Clean out your barns and garages and help the fellowship!

Calendar Updates

Sewing Circle will meet on July 2, but not on July 16.

Summer Cleaning

It is time to start thinking about spring cleaning in the summer! Please consider helping out with the following summer cleaning opportunities:
  • Gutters cleaned (2-3 people): needs to happen before July 6, 2018
  • July 6th or August 3rd, prior to the potluck: do you want to work up an appetite? Please consider helping out with a few summer cleaning chores:
    - Trimming bushes
    - Edging the lawn around the sidewalks
    - Window cleaning
    - Flower garden – weeds, trash, etc.
Please let me know what fun activity you would like to partake in and on what date would be best for you. Please e-mail Terrie Robbie (TLRobbie1@gmail.com) and let me know what looks like a good chore for you - thank you!     ~ Terrie Robbie & James Hatcher

Fire and Tornado Safety Procedures

The Board has adopted safety procedures for tornado and fire situations.
They are:

Tornado Warning Response

  • Upon receipt of a tornado warning, congregants should proceed to the Green Room or the Hallway adjacent to the Sanctuary or the Basement.
  • Children should be brought to those locations by RE personnel.
  • People with disabilities will be assisted by designated congregants.
  • Congregants are asked to remain in place until there is an all-clear notification.

Fire Warning Response

In the event of a fire or fire warning, the safest response for congregants is to exit the building.
  • Congregants in the Sanctuary should exit through the double doors
in the back of the Sanctuary. Doors open inward.
  • Occupants of other rooms should use the nearest safe exit
as designated by the wall signage.
  • People with disabilities will be assisted by designated congregants.
  • Children will be directed to the nearest safe exit by RE personnel.
  • Our Church designated meeting area is in front of the Library.
This is where parents should meet their children.
Bees do have a smell, you know, and if they don't they should,
for their feet are dusted with spices from a million flowers.

I expect to pass through this world just once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Please plan to join us for worship this coming Sunday, June 24 as we close our monthly theme of “What Does It Mean to Be a People of Blessing?” with a sermon by the Rev. J. Mark Worth, “Blessing the World,” given by Tom Moffit.

to bless life, we can repair the world.     ~ Rachel Naomi Remen

You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle,
but you are worthy of love and belonging.

Worship Matters

Please plan to join us for worship this coming Sunday, June 17 as we celebrate the welcoming of four new members into our fellowship and hear a message from our minister titled “On the Blessing of Belonging.”

The truth is: Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging,
in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you’re enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect.     ~ Brene Brown

Fellowship Life Meeting - Sunday, June 17

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

CUUPs Litha Ritual - Sunday, June 17

Solstice, or Litha means a stopping or standing still of the sun. It is the longest day of the year and the time when the sun is at its maximum elevation. This is a time to celebrate growth and life for those who see balance in the world and are deeply aware of the ongoing shifting of the seasons. It is also time to acknowledge that the sun will now begin to decline once more towards winter. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm. Contact Annette Pratt (989-400-0173; ampratt@cybersingerscafe.com) for more information.

Help Rename the Congregational Life Ministry Team!

Names will be collected until June 30 and chosen at the July CLMT meeting.

Safety Information

The UUFCM Board recently established a Safety Task Force to assist us in developing policy and procedures for safety measures needed in the event of dangerous circumstances that may result via nature and/or human intent. Be aware that as we work to become a more safety-conscious congregation, you will be seeing some changes to help make us safer from fire, tornados, and potential assailants. Please take the time to read the article “Sunday Security” on page 40 in the Spring 2018 issue of UU World magazine. It explains how the UUA and individual congregations are becoming more safety proactive.

Lansing PRIDE is coming up – come join us!
If anyone from your congregation would like to march in the Pride Parade in Lansing on Saturday June 16, the folks from UU Church of Greater Lansing would love to have them march with us. We are registered to participate and our friends are always welcome! We will have the big yellow Side with Love banner (or the old version if need be) and at least some of us will be in the yellow t-shirts.

The parade leaves from Adado Riverfront Park (on N. Grand Ave, and UU Lansing usually placed near the corner of E. Shiawassee St). It steps off at 12:00 noon, so try to be there 11:30-11:45ish. The rally is at the Capitol steps, the end point of the parade, immediately following. The festival is then in Old Town (Turner Street between Cesar Chavez and Clinton), which is about  from 1:00 on (officially, it goes on till 10:00pm).  We will have a booth there till about 5:00 and welcome your helping out or just stopping by to say hello.
