Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, June 15, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz who will present "Flower Communion." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"The special ritual of Flower Communion is celebrated by Unitarian Universalists everywhere. All are invited to bring a flower to the service if you can (we will have extras to share). Each person places a flower in the common vase to represent what you bring to the congregation; at the end, each person takes home a different flower to represent what you receive from the congregation. Please join us!"

Minister’s Column: Peaceful Protest

As I write this on Tuesday, the protests in Los Angeles and the response of the federal government are ongoing. Aggressive raids against immigrants triggered community protest, which in turn led to the calling out of the national guard. This deployment is unlawful because it is against the wishes of the governor of California, and I fear it will lead to further escalation.

Read the column here.

No Kings Day Rally & Social Picnic - June 14 (A Big One!)

If you haven’t already heard, June 14th is both Flag Day and DT’s birthday - and he is spending $45 million on a parade honoring......himself. National resistance groups have mobilized across the nation to draw attention away from Washington D.C. and to oppose the march towards authoritarianism - NO KINGS! - being the theme. Indivisible Mt. Pleasant is hosting an event here in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, June 14! Marchers are meeting at the parking area between Meijers and Mission at 11:00, then lining the sidewalks on Mission and Pickard for a rally, ending at 1:00. We very much encourage everyone to be there if you can!  And bring friends!

This short PowerPoint explains the theme of NO KINGS Day, who the partners are, and important information about what the plans are in Mt. Pleasant.  Click HERE!

Immediately following the event we are going to host a social/picnic at Chipp-A-Waters park. This will be a bring-your-own lunch and non-alcoholic beverage - families welcome! The picnic pavilion holds 175 people, so there may be overflow - if you can, bring folding chairs and/or picnic blankets. The admin team will be providing some sweet treats to celebrate standing up for democracy! Please use this link to register if you plan on attending so that we have an idea of numbers. Hope to see you there! https://mobilize.us/s/Myuf7j

Special Offering Collection – THIS Sunday, June 15

This Sunday a collection will be taken to supplement the minister’s discretionary fund which is used to respond to requests from people in the community who might need gas money, money to pay an electric bill, a night in a hotel, etc. You can donate online to this fund at our website or checks can be made out to UUFCM with “Discretionary Fund” indicated in the memo line, and sent to UUFCM Treasurer, P.O. Box 41, Mt. Pleasant, MI, 48804-0041.

Your Presence Needed Monday, June 16!

The final vote on the recommended grades 4-6 curriculum “Puberty the Wonder Years,” which has been updated to include gender identity, will be on Monday, June 16, at 6:30 pm in the Mt. Pleasant High School cafeteria, and our presence at this school board meeting is vital so that the Board sees that there is significant community support for the revised curriculum, not just those who may attend in opposition to the adoption of the curriculum. Please attend!!

Simply attending the school board meeting is important to show support, but if you feel comfortable, speaking up in favor of the curriculum (or writing a brief email/letter to the school board) is even better!  What might you say – at the Board meeting or in a written communication?
  • If you reviewed the curriculum at the public hearing, you could comment about how you, as a community member (or parent), feel very comfortable with the material in the updated version.
  • You could state how you believe that complete and accurate information about human diversity is important for all our students.
  • You might talk about how inclusive curriculum is important so that all our students can feel respected, safe and that they belong.
You decide what you would like to say; it doesn’t have to be long, just affirming and supportive.

If you wish to write the school board members, here are the addresses of the members.
[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]

Please pass this information on to others in your circle of family and friends who might also like to show their support with their presence and/or voice.

Urge Congress: Save Public Media

Public media is facing multiple serious threats. The White House proposed eliminating federal funding in its annual budget request, issued an Executive Order to block support for PBS and NPR, and plans to claw back funding approved by Congress.

Federal funding ensures that local public radio and TV stations can continue to give access to essential educational, local, and cultural programming; trustworthy, in-depth news; and emergency and community-based services.

Our local PBS and NPR affiliate, WCMU Public Media, utilizes four television and eight radio stations to reach over 2 million people across 42 counties within Central and Northern Michigan. Community Service Grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting provide just over 19% of WCMU's annual budget.

HOW WE CAN HELP: Please take a moment to visit https://protectmypublicmedia.org and tell Congress to reject the rescissions package and stop the dismantling of public media!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, June 8, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz who will present "Schooling and Graduation." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Schooling and Graduation"

Rev. Drew Frantz

The end of the school year is one milestone marking the beginning of summer. This Sunday we honor people in the Fellowship who have recently graduated. We also reflect on the terrible history of the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School, and on the current trends in public education, asking: what values inform the schooling that we offer children in our society?

Minister’s Column: "Freedom"

In honor of this month’s theme of Freedom, I share this poem from Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, entitled “Perhaps It Would Eventually Erode, But…”

That rock that we
have been pushing up
the hill—that one

that keeps rolling back down
and we keep pushing
back up—what if

we stopped? We are not
Sisyphus. This rock
is not a punishment.

It’s something we’ve chosen
to push. Who knows why.
I look at all the names

we once carved into
its sedimentary sides.
How important

I thought they were,
those names. How
I’ve clung to labels,

who’s right, who’s wrong,
how I’ve cared about
who’s pushed harder

and who’s been slack.
Now all I want
is to let the rock

roll back to where it belongs,
which is wherever it lands,
and you and I could,

imagine!, walk unencumbered,
all the way to the top and
walk and walk and never stop

except to discover what
our hands might do
if for once they were no longer

pushing.

I’m grateful to this poet for reminding us about the hellish task of Sisyphus, and for encouraging us to break free from the soul-crushing routines that we are locked into. Or, that we lock ourselves into, as the poem seems to suggest. To me the endless pushing of the rock uphill (only to have it roll down again) is like the rat race of working jobs we don’t like. It also reminds me of the struggle with addiction: being locked in a pattern of bad habits that we think are doing something for us, but keep putting us in the same low place.

My take-away from the poem is that we hold the key to our own liberation. That is the same message I get from these words, the chorus of a song called “Houdini” written by the band BackBone:

Teach me your magic, Houdini.
Teach me to live when it’s looking grim.
Teach me to break open all the locks
And free myself from these chains
I put myself in.

Other things can keep us feeling trapped as well: clinging to anger and resentment; doing things the same way even if they aren’t working; putting ourselves down and not believing in ourselves. In all of these examples, there is a chance of setting ourselves free through perceiving the problem and working to change ourselves. It may not be easy and it may take help, but I believe we can accomplish this kind of self-growth.

To further explore the theme of freedom, I invite you to consider these questions, if any of them speak to you:
When did you feel most free as a child?
Has quitting ever set you free?
What story from your life best captures your understanding of freedom?
            Whose freedom do you envy?
            Has numbing become your cage?
Would living more simply bring you more freedom?
When were you freed by love?
(excerpted from the Soul Matters “Freedom” small group guide)

PRAYER:
Spirit of Life and Love, may every human being seek and know greater freedom.
May there be freedom from oppression, freedom from sickness, freedom from poverty.
And may we have the freedom of spirit to thrive to our fullest potential, unlocking the best parts of ourselves.
May it be so.

UUFCM Is Hiring

Administrative Assistant job starts July 1

After working with us for two years, our Administrative Assistant Wendy Altmeier will be moving on at the end of June. We are now posting the job to find her successor. The starting pay is $17.50-$19.40, for seven hours per week, working remotely. The full details are in this job posting, which everyone is encouraged to share.

Often the best employees come from word of mouth, so please let Rev. Drew know if you have a person in mind who might be good for this job. It is UUFCM policy that we do not normally hire someone who is a member of the congregation.

The application deadline is June 1st, and Rev. Drew will interview candidates along with a representative from the Board of Trustees and the Communications Team.

Scam Alert

Several congregants have received emails and texts purportedly from UUFCM leadership. If you receive a message that seems suspicious, please remember that we would never solicit money or ask for help in this way, and do not respond to the message.

Your Presence and Action Are Needed!

Now that the Sex Education Advisory Board of the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools has forwarded a recommendation to the school board by a narrow 6-5 vote, our presence and action are needed.  The recommended grades 4-6 curriculum “Puberty the Wonder Years” has been updated to include gender identity, and there is very likely significant opposition to the revised version. In order to show that there is community support for the updated curriculum, we who believe in the inclusion of all our students need to take action.

What can we do?
  • The final vote on the recommended grades 4-6 curriculum “Puberty the Wonder Years,” which has been updated to include gender identity, will be on Monday, June 16, at 6:30 pm in the Mt. Pleasant High School cafeteria, and our presence at this school board meeting is vital so that the Board sees that there is significant community support for the revised curriculum, not just those who may attend in opposition to the adoption of the curriculum. Please put this on your calendar!

Simply attending the school board meeting is important to show support, but if you feel comfortable, speaking up in favor of the curriculum (or writing a brief email/letter to the school board) is even better!  What might you say – at the Board meeting or in a written communication?

Please pass this information on to others in your circle of family and friends who might also like to show their support with their presence and/or voice.

This is a lot of information so if you have questions, please feel free to contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, June 1, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz who will present "Pride." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"June is Pride Month when we celebrate the diversity of gender and sexuality in our human community–and advocate for equality and inclusion. These stances are central to Unitarian Universalism, and much needed in the current environment of threat and exclusion. The morning message will include reflections on the UUA Common Read for 2024-25: Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families."

Minister’s Column:
"Reggae Values"

I spent this past weekend with family in Ohio, and on Sunday I went to the Cleveland Reggae Fest. My brother-in-law Tommy plays in one of the five bands that took the stage that day. Along with the joy of an entire afternoon spent dancing on the shore of Lake Erie, my take away was how strong and pervasive the values of love, peace, unity and inclusion are in reggae music and culture.

No Kings Day Rally & Social Picnic - June 14 (A Big One!)

If you haven’t already heard, June 14 is both Flag Day and DT’s birthday - and he plans to spend $45 million on a parade honoring......himself. National resistance groups are mobilizing to draw attention away from Washington D.C. to oppose the GOP’s march towards authoritarianism - NO KINGS! - being the theme. Indivisible Mt. Pleasant will be hosting an event right here! We’ll be meeting at the parking area between Meijers and Mission at 11:00am, then lining the sidewalks on Mission and Pickard for a rally, ending at 1:00pm.

  • If you reviewed the curriculum at the public hearing, you could comment about how you, as a community member (or parent), feel very comfortable with the material in the updated version.
  • You could state how you believe that complete and accurate information about human diversity is important for all our students.
  • You might talk about how inclusive curriculum is important so that all our students can feel respected, safe and that they belong.
You decide what you would like to say; it doesn’t have to be long, just affirming and supportive.

Please pass this information on to others in your circle of family and friends who might also like to show their support with their presence and/or voice.

This is a lot of information so if you have questions, please feel free to contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952.

Minister’s Column:

At my father’s memorial service this spring I read aloud the following poem, which I wrote years ago. The poem refers to a wilderness canoe trip he and I took when I was a teenager--a trip he remembered fondly until the end of his days and would often recall even as his memory failed.

Garage Sale Coming Soon!

June 12, 13, and 14

Please continue to save anything that we could sell at our garage sale on June 12, 13, and 14 at Norma Bailey’s home. We will also include a plant sale during the event, so think about plants you might be able to donate.

Right now we are in need of saw horses, large boards, and tables; please contact Norma (989-560-3952 or [email protected]) to set up delivery of these items.

Next week, we’ll send out a sign-up sheet for sorting and pricing the items and for staffing the sale, so please keep some time open June 2-14 to help with this; let’s make this a truly all-UUFCM members’ and friends’ effort! Next week we’ll also announce when people can bring items over.

2025 Stewardship Campaign

Our stewardship campaign has officially ended with  62 pledges turned in for a total of $138,957 pledged!
While not reaching our proposed budget, the Board is comfortable with moving forward with the proposed budget, recognizing that several people haven’t yet pledged and that other sources of income are rentals, plate offerings and other miscellaneous donations.  As well, our savings could cover any shortfall.

If you might yet wish to pledge. contact Cynthia Damer, the chair of the Stewardship Committee.

Evaluation of Shared Ministry

This is your opportunity to share feedback to improve the congregation.

A team of four members plus the minister is undertaking a yearly review of the work the minister is doing and the work all of us are doing (shared ministry). We have identified these categories as the focus of our evaluation this year:
  1. Pastoral Care
  2. Worship (Sunday worship and special services)
  3. Religious Education: Youth and Adult
  4. Administration
             A. Communication
             B. Governance
             C. Supervision of hourly and contract employees

For each category, we are asking these overall questions:
  • What is the minister doing well in this category?
  • How could the minister improve his work in this category?
  • What is the congregation doing well in this category?
  • How could the congregation improve its work in this category?
We have identified members of the congregation who have particular insight into these categories and will be contacting them soon to ask more specific questions. If you would like to be interviewed regarding any of these categories, please contact one of the members of the evaluation team. Please let us know by May 26.

Evaluation team: Annette Pratt, Norma Bailey, Sierra Burke, Laura McBride, Drew Frantz

UUFCM Annual Meeting - THIS Sunday, May 18

The Annual Meeting of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Michigan (UUFCM), will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, right after the worship service. This meeting, while open to all members and friends, is the time when the members of the Fellowship will vote on the business of the Fellowship. Please plan on attending. Here's a link to the 2025 UUFCM Annual Report.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, May 18, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz who will present "Imagination." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am. Followed by the Annual Meeting.

"The importance of imagination goes far beyond fantasy stories and children’s tales. When we find our situation to be far from how we want it to be, imagination is necessary to move forward. This is true for our personal lives and for our society. The Fellowship’s annual business meeting follows the service this Sunday–another opportunity to imagine the community we want and to take steps toward that goal."

Minister’s Column: “Episcopalians Resist”

Today NPR ran a story about the Trump administration and the Episcopal Church. While freezing the refugee resettlement program for the rest of the world, Trump made a special allowance for white South Africans to apply for refugee status, bringing them to the United States on a chartered plane and having government officials welcome them. They asked the Episcopal Church to help settle these people in America, as the church has done for 100,000 refugees in recent decades. And this time, the church said No.

Read-In to Support Libraries, Museums, and Public Broadcasting - Saturday, May 17

As Thomas Jefferson said, “A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny”.

Indivisible MP wants to clearly state that the GOP cutting funding for any of these institutions IS NOT OK.

  1. There is another public hearing required before the school board can vote to approve the curriculum. This second one will be held on Monday, May 19, 5:00-6:00 pm in the Mt. Pleasant High School Room 111 where you can view the curriculum materials, ask questions, and provide feedback to Linda Boyd, the Assistant Superintendent.
  2. The next, and crucial, step is to attend the school board meeting on Monday, May 19, 6:30 pm in the Mt. Pleasant High School cafeteria, where you can give feedback, and the Board will take its first vote.
  3. The final vote will be on Monday, June 16, also at 6:30 pm in the Mt. Pleasant High School cafeteria, and our presence is vital there, too.Our presence is important so that the Board sees that there is significant community support for the revised curriculum, not just those who may attend in opposition to the adoption of the curriculum.
Simply attending these two school board meetings is important to show support, but if you feel comfortable, speaking up in favor of the curriculum (or writing a brief email/letter to the school board) is even better!

Please pass this information on to others in your circle of family and friends who might also like to show their support with their presence and/or voice.

This is a lot of information so if you have questions, please feel free to contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952.

PFLAG Meeting - June 1

In support of Pride Month 2025, St. John’s Episcopal Church will host an informational PFLAG meeting with chapter President Tom Brubaker, Sunday, June 1, at 11:30am in their parish hall on Washington. We are invited to attend for coffee and snacks, and we are asked to spread the word.

The Resistance Network

Recently, the UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee) launched the Resistance Network—a mobilization hub designed to take immediate action when civil liberties, democracy, and human rights are at risk. The threats we face are vast, but history shows us that resistance works when we act together. The Resistance Network is an opportunity to live our values as Unitarian Universalists and take collective action.

Our Youth RE Artists Create at For Arts Sake!

Friday evening, May 2, several of our RE youth attended a special event for them at For Arts Sake to create textured art canvases. They first drew their design, then mixed water, glue, paint and shredded paper, before using art tweezers to bring their design to life. Use your imagination to figure out what the young ones created! We topped the evening off with apple juice and cookies from Jennifer Davis.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, May 11, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz who will present "The Divine Feminine." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"In honor of Mother’s Day we consider the female archetype of the Mother alongside other female archetypes such as the Maiden and the Crone–all aspects of the divine feminine. Who provides you with the nurturing and protective energy of the Mother? How do you provide nurturing and protection to yourself and others?"

Minister’s Column: "The John Glenn School"

Seeking Congregation Feedback Regarding Proposed Sex Offender Policy - Due TONIGHT

On Saturday, April 26, we held a town hall meeting to discuss the difficult topic of how to include in our congregation people who are on the sex offender registry. The question is: how can we balance the worth and dignity of the person on the registry with the safety of the congregation?

If you didn't attend the town hall meeting, now is your chance to offer your feedback, thoughts, and concerns. Please let us know if you have something to say!

Attached is the draft of the proposed policy that the Board of Trustees is considering (it has not been enacted yet because we wanted everyone's feedback). Also attached is an example of what's called a Limited Access Agreement. This shows that kind of restrictions and safeguards that might be placed on a registered sex offender's participation in UUFCM events. Finally, attached are three questions that we asked everyone at the town hall. You can share your responses here by the end of the day on Thursday, May 8.

To offer feedback in person, please contact a member of the Safe Congregation Team by Thursday, May 8: Mary Alsager, Norma Bailey, Sierra Burke, Rev. Drew Frantz, Aaron Jones, Stacey Pattison, and Katie Zapoluch.

Building Your Own Theology Class  - THIS Sunday, May 11

The final class, led by Jim Dealing and Rev. Drew, will be held this Sunday, May 11. Participants should receive a detailed email with the assignments. Please contact Jim or Drew with any questions..

Saturday Clean-Up a Success!

Thank you to Norma Bailey, Jennifer Davis, Daniel Davis, Janet Olson, Darlene Ritchie, Mary Alsager, Kelly Lawson, Aaron, Katie and Felix Jones, Alissa Kantnik, Rev. Drew, and Kirsten King for all their work on Saturday, April 26, cleaning up and beautifying our grounds! Beds were cleaned out, bushes trimmed, lawns raked, sidewalks edged, and hoses put out, and we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon and great conversation!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, May 4, to worship with Worship Leader Norma Bailey and Joyce Henricks who will present "'The Poor You Will Always Have With You' Why?" The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Nelson Mandela stated: "Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings." Joyce Henricks will comment on these ideas, one from the Bible and one from Nelson Mandela, and explore how we can respond."

Minister’s Column: “William Barber’s Arrest”

One of my heroes is the Rev. Dr. William Barber. He is the leader of the Poor People’s Campaign, whose social justice work is radically intersectional. While the organization is named for low-income people and centers on their needs, they also fight for women and children; LGBTQ people; immigrants; and those with disabilities.

Seeking Congregation Feedback Regarding Proposed Sex Offender Policy

You can share your responses here by the end of the day on Thursday, May 8..

To offer feedback in person, please contact a member of the Safe Congregation Team by Thursday, May 8: Mary Alsager, Norma Bailey, Sierra Burke, Rev. Drew Frantz, Aaron Jones, Stacey Pattison, and Katie Zapoluch.

UUFCM Annual Meeting - Sunday, May 18

The Annual Meeting of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Michigan (UUFCM), will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, right after the worship service. This meeting, while open to all members and friends, is the time when the members of the Fellowship will vote on the business of the Fellowship. Please plan on attending.

Concert a Great Success!

On Saturday, April 19, “A Simple Thing,” a local indie folk-Americana group made up of Daniel Davis, Claire Lester, Cynthia Damer and Chris Olson, played a mix of original songs and favorite covers to a mixed crowd of family members, friends and UUFCM folks.  The concert was well-received, and $363 of donations were made to the church general fund!  Thank you, band!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, April 27, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Earth-Centered Religion." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"A core piece of Unitarian Universalism is connection with our natural environment. Yet in many ways, we are a religion of thinking and ideas, and of human relationships. Other religious traditions are more earth-centered and less intellectual. What are you looking for in religion–connection to God and heaven? Being grounded in the cycles of nature? This Sunday we explore how our tradition fits in the context of earth-centered religions."

Minister’s Column

I heard the news yesterday that the Pope had died, and on the day after Easter. The timing seems ironic at first—death juxtaposed with the celebration of life and re-birth. Yet today I read a piece of writing from the Pope himself a couple of months ago: it talked about the inevitability of death (human wisdom for any spiritually mature person, especially for an elder) and about the joyful certainty of life everlasting in heaven (a belief specific to his religion, and shared by some others). Viewed in that light, the timing of this pope’s death was fitting.

Town Hall and Spring Clean-up Information - THIS Saturday, April 26

Town Hall (10:00am-12:00pm in the Sanctuary)
Recently, Drew was approached by someone interested in joining our Fellowship who disclosed that they are on the sex offender registry. Drew immediately reached out to our President, Aaron Jones, and President Elect, Norma Bailey, to discuss the situation. After careful consideration, it was decided that this person should not attend the Fellowship until we have a formal policy in place.

At the next Board meeting, the issue was addressed, and a path forward was established. Recognizing that children’s safety is a priority for us all, Drew reached out to parents to keep them informed. The Board formed a special Safe Congregation Team to develop a policy framework on this matter. To ensure we are handling this responsibly, both Drew and the Board have sought guidance from Lisa Presley of the UUA Mid-America Region.

As part of this process, it was recommended that we hold a special town hall event to present the proposed policy and invite input from the congregation. This event will take place on Saturday, April 26th, at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary. We encourage everyone to attend, share their thoughts, and be part of this important conversation.

Please contact Rev. Drew with any questions about this matter. He will share what he can within the bounds of confidentiality.

Lunch  (12:00-1:00pm in the Fellowship Hall)

Spring Clean-Up (1:00pm-3:00pm Outdoors)

Every year in the spring we have a spring clean-up where we spruce up the outside of our building! We’ll pick up sticks, rake, weed, edge sidewalks, trim bushes, get the hoses out, and wash windows, so please bring rakes, gloves, weeding tools, and clippers; we’ll provide the other materials.

Movie Night - THIS Saturday, April 26

Technology is banned—by religious command.
Superstition is nurtured—by those in power.
Questioning authority? Forbidden.
Sound familiar?

It may echo today’s headlines, but this is Battle for Terra—a gripping sci-fi story set in the aftermath of humanity’s self-destruction. After Earth, Mars, and Venus are lost to war and greed, the last survivors drift through space aboard the aging ship "Ark", desperate for a new home.

They find Terra—a lush planet already inhabited by a peaceful, agricultural society whose values are built on the very principles the Ark once abandoned. The solution? Extermination.

Join us Saturday, April 26, to see the outcome.

Stewardship Campaign 2025  Ends Sunday, April 27

Our stewardship campaign which began with our stewardship luncheon on Sunday, April 6, now has 45 pledges turned in!

  • Continue to participate in the April 21-27 General Mills boycott.
  • Sign up for our Social Justice Interest Survey if you haven’t already – to receive alerts about petitions to sign, members of Congress to call or email, both federal and state.
  • Put these people into your phone contacts and make at least one phone call or text every day.  They keep track of how many calls/messages they receive.

    • Michigan Senator Roger Hauck (517-373-1760)
    • Michigan State House Representative Jerry Neyer (517-373-2646)
  • Particularly speak up against the SAVE Act (federal) and HJR B (state) which are being debated and ultimately voted on in the US Congress and in our state legislature. These would require documentary proof in person to register (or reregister if you move) to vote! The SAVE Act is being voted on in the Senate soon. Call Senators Peters and Slotkin!

UUFCM Banner a Great Success!

Our paint and pizza party to paint our UUFCM banner to hang in downtown Mt. Pleasant was a great success! We painted, ate pizza, painted some more, and finished our masterpiece in record time! Great thanks to Darlene Ritchie for designing our banner and organizing our work and to everyone who painted!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, April 13, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Joy in Times of Crisis". The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"The nation and the world are in a moment of economic, political and social crisis. The attacks on institutions and people are overwhelming in their speed and brazen-ness. Acting on our values of love, justice and equity, we are called to resist authoritarianism and to protect ourselves and others. And a necessary, if surprising, component of that resistance is Joy. Joy connects us and reminds us of what we’re fighting for. Let’s support one another and share both our outrage and our Joy."

Minister’s Column

On Sunday we had our stewardship luncheon, one purpose of which was to ask people in the congregation how much money they are willing to pledge in support of the Fellowship for next year. Unfortunately, this event followed some of the worst economic news we have seen in a while. Some of us are seeing the tanking stock market and worrying about our retirement savings; others are uncertain about keeping their jobs in the government.

Read the column here.

Stewardship Campaign 2025

Our stewardship campaign began with our stewardship luncheon on Sunday, April 6! Thirty-one pledges have already been turned in, so we have gotten off to a great start!

We mailed the other stewardship packets on Monday, April 7, so you should have received yours by now with explanations and directions about how to make your pledge as well as explain our interesting incentives -  incentives to turn in your pledge form early, increase your pledge amount, and/or pledge for the first time! There is also a new volunteer form to let us know ways in which you would like to share your time and talents.

Please be sure to read the materials right away and take action. If you have questions, contact anyone on the Stewardship Committee - Norma Bailey, Cynthia Damer, Drew Frantz, Jim Moreno, and Daria Kingman.

Building Your Own Theology Class  - THIS Sunday, April 13

This class, led by Jim Dealing and Rev. Drew, continues with classes April 13, and again in May. Participants should receive a detailed email with the assignments. Please contact Jim or Drew with any questions..

Authentic Selves Discussion Group - Tuesday, April 15

We are doing a book discussion group for the UUA common read book Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families. If you missed the previous sessions, you can get the material from Rev. Drew or from the UUA website. Please join us for the next session, Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

“We Believe…” Yard Signs for Sale

At the all-congregations retreat in January, it was suggested that we be able to offer yard signs for people to purchase with “We believe..” on them.  The Social Justice Coordinating Team has ordered 20 signs (with metal stands) to sell for $12 each. They are available until all are sold. If you wish to purchase one, please give Norma Bailey $12 in cash or a check written out to UUFCM, with yard sign in the memo line.

2025-2026 UUFCM Board of Trustees Candidates & Proposed Bylaws Changes

Our fellowship’s Bylaws outline the process for selecting the slate of candidates for next year’s Board. If you’re unfamiliar with the nominating procedures, please refer to Articles 9.2, 9.2.1, and 9.2.2 in the current UUFCM Bylaws.

This year’s Nominating Committee consists of Annette Pratt (chair), Aaron Jones, and Jim Moreno. The committee is pleased to present the following slate of candidates for the open Board positions:

• President-Elect: Guy Newland

• Secretary: Jennifer Davis

• Trustee At Large (Two-Year Term): Jennifer Prout

• Trustee At Large (One-Year Term): Marco Muñoz-Fortino

We sincerely thank these individuals for their willingness to serve and encourage all members to consider future opportunities to join the Board.

Alternative Nominating Procedure
If you or another member would like to add a nominee for any of these positions, you may do so through the Alternative Nominating Procedure (see Bylaws section 9.2.1). To submit a nomination, send a petition signed (electronically or handwritten) by three members supporting the nominee to Annette Pratt ([email protected]) and CC President Aaron Jones ([email protected]) no later than Sunday, April 13. Please ensure the nominee has given their consent before submission.

Please note: All elected candidates will begin their terms on July 1 and serve through June 30 of the appropriate term length, as outlined in the Bylaws. Additionally, nominations from the floor will not be accepted at the annual meeting. If you wish to nominate someone not listed above, please follow the Alternative Nominating Procedure.

Bylaws Amendments
In addition to Board elections, we will discuss proposed Bylaws changes at the annual meeting. Please review the proposed amendments here before the meeting.

This year’s annual meeting will be held after service on Sunday, May 18. Elections for Board officers and Bylaws amendments will take place electronically in the days following the annual meeting.

Thank you for your engagement in this very important process!

Town Hall and Spring Clean-up Information - Saturday, April 26

Save the Date – Live Concert Coming to UUFCM!

Live music is coming to the UUFCM sanctuary on Saturday, April 19, at 7:00 pm! The concert features “A Simple Thing,” a local indie folk-Americana trio made up of Daniel Davis, Claire Lester, and Chris Olson playing a mix of original songs and favorite covers. This event is a fundraiser to benefit the UU Fellowship, so come out and support a great cause!

Do Something MORE!

In the February 23 sermon “Protest and Persist: Giving Up Hope Is Not an Option,” Norma Bailey mentioned several actions that each of us could take to help make a difference. Here are some repeats and additional ones in blue:
  • Join 5 Calls (www.5calls.org), either in your email or in an app on your phone. Enter your zip code; then you are given a list of current issues to choose from about which you may wish to contact your representatives. For each, you get an explanation about the current status of the issues, a script to use to speak to your representative, and contact information for each person to contact. Several of our local UUs are using this very successfully.
  • Continue to boycott Target, Amazon and Nestles’s,  and participate in the April 7-14 Walmart boycott.
  • Participate in the Stop the Save Act rally on Saturday, April 12, 10:00 – 12:00 in Lansing. More information is in the Community News.
    • Senator Gary Peters (202-224-6221)
    • Senator Elissa Slotkin (202-224-4822)
    • US House Representative John Moolenaar (202-225-3561)
    • Michigan Senator Roger Hauck (517-373-1760)
    • Michigan State House Representative Jerry Neyer (517-373-2646)
  • Particularly speak up against the SAVE Act (federal) and HJR B (state) which are being debated and ultimately voted on in the US Congress and in our state legislature. These would require documentary proof in person to register (or reregister if you move) to vote! The SAVE Act is being voted on in the House of Representatives this week!  Call John Moolenaar!  202-225-3561

2025 Earth Day Celebration - Tuesday, April 22

Everyone’s invited! EARTH DAY CELEBRATION 2025 will be held Tuesday, April 22, 11:00am to 4:00pm at the Farmers Market Pavilion in Island Park. Oodles of information, giveaways, and fun activities for all ages sponsored by Central Michigan Sustainability Partners and DTE.

Stop the SAVE Act District Office Rally - Saturday, April 12

John Moolenar's Caledonia Office
Saturday, April 12, at 10:00am

Anti-voter lawmakers in the US House or Representatives have introduced legislation to restrict the ability of eligible American citizens to register to vote by introducing oppressive new identification requirements.

The federal SAVE Act (H.R. 22) would require documentary proof of citizenship, creating chaos in our elections while blocking eligible voters from voting.

Millions of Michiganders voted to make voter registration and elections more accessible for eligible Michigan citizens in 2018 and 2022. We can not allow Washington D.C. politics and intentional election fearmongering to take over our state’s elections and disenfranchise Michigan voters.

Come to Representative John Moolenaar's district office in Caledonia and rally to urge them to vote NO on the SAVE Act! Sign up here!

Superintendent Jennifer Verleger, Chief Financial Officer Ginger Faber, and Assistant Superintendent Linda Boyd will be there to share the details and answer any questions participants might have.

Capitol Day - Wednesday, April 23

Communities Over Corporations
Organized by Michigan United and Partners - including Michigan UU Social Justice Network

Working families are under attack -- from Lansing to D.C. -- and we must fight back. We're calling UUs from across Michigan to join together at the State Capitol to demand a government that puts people over profit. Issues we're fighting for: taxing wealth, getting big money out of politics, universal healthcare, reproductive freedom, defending voter rights.

Formal programming from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm:
·  Lobby meetings with key policymakers
·  A youth panel
·  A rally to demonstrate our power and solidarity

Click here to let us know you're going. Watch for further information about meet-up points, messaging for conversations with policymakers, signs for the rally, parking, and other logistics. Click here to access Michigan United's website for this event.

Get Involved in Local Governance

We all know that national and state politics have an impact on our lives, but a single voice can make a huge difference at the local level! Consider adding some of these upcoming meetings to your calendar. Use public comment if you have something to say. Even if you choose not to speak, your presence lets our elected representatives know that we are engaged and listening.
