eNews for Wednesday, July 27

7/25/2016

Everyone should be born into this world happy
and loving everything.
But in truth it rarely works that way.
For myself, I have spent my life clambering toward it.
Hallelujah, anyway I’m not where I started!
And have you too been trudging like that, sometimes
almost forgetting how wondrous the world is
and how miraculously kind some people can be?

~ Mary Oliver
In Worship
We have a special treat this Sunday, July 31! Our message for the morning, “Work as Spiritual Practice” will be presented by Martin Melville, a Quaker seminarian at Earlham School of Religion. His colleague – our minister – will be the service leader. Please join us for the opportunity to hear this unique voice from our pulpit.

Martin is an “unprogrammed” Quaker (we’ll hear more about that on Sunday) who lives and works as a logger in State College, PA. He also kayaks, climbs trees professionally and is a serious whistler.

Looking Ahead
Sunday, August 7: “Honoring Hiroshima Peace Day”

Host Family Needed
The Council for Educational Student Travel is seeking a host family for a 16-year- old girl from Thailand planning to attend Mt. Pleasant HS this coming year – this student had a host family lined up but they backed out when they learned the girl was a vegetarian. Please contact Lisa DanDan at 989.854.6035 for more information.

Books Available

Tracy Riley has brought in some books that belonged to Danielle - they will be available for your perusal in the social hall after service. If you decide to take a book or two...and if you’re able...please leave a donation of your choosing in the receptacle provided. Thank you.
Summer RE News
Our RE youth have picked their first produce from the raised gardens – three cucumbers and four squash – which have been delivered to the Soup Kitchen. Lots of beans will be picked this week and delivered too! The children have weeded and watered each week to keep the gardens in good shape. Good job, RE youth!
Scrap Metal Collection
There will be a scrap metal collection with proceeds going towards sending two people to leadership camp next summer. Look through your garage, basement, yard, and attic for items to donate to this drop off - old appliances, satellite dishes, wire, fencing, etc. A trailer will be available for hauling donations to the  salvage yard. Dates aren't firm yet, but probably Saturday and Sunday collections. The final date for scrap metal delivery to the salvage company will be Saturday, August 20th. If you have questions or items, contact Laura McBride at 989.772.5512 or [email protected]. Any assistance is welcome!

CUUPs Celebrates Lammas - Sunday, July 31
Covenant of UU Pagans will celebrate Lammas, the first harvest festival of the year. We celebrate the bounty of late summer that will help us to thrive for another year. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm.

First Friday Potluck - August 5
Join us on Friday, August 5 for our monthly potluck/birthday celebration. Laura McBride will be hosting, with t
he theme of Summer Fare and Harvest Goodies, for an evening of nourishment, fellowship, and possibly even a game or two. Birthdays to be celebrated this month: Bob McBride, Bob Corbett, Terrie Robbie, Liz Dealing, Bob Clason, Ethan Kolek, and Betty McBride.

While Laura McBride hosting on August 5th, we are still in need of hosts for September 2nd and beyond. If you are willing to host a potluck, please
email/phone Chris Bauerle directly at [email protected] or 989-330-8457. If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

Infant Pantry Collection - August 7
Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are  things for baby care - diapers (especially sizes 5 and 6), creams, shampoos, and  lotions. Baby food and formula are not needed a this time. If you want to donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Please contact Tom Moffit ([email protected] or 772-1602) with any questions.

If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks.
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view,
until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.
