People say, what is the sense of our small effort?
They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time.
A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions.
Each one of our thoughts, words and deeds is like that.
No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.
~ Dorothy Day
This Sunday, October 25 we come to the end of our month-long sojourn with “hunger and longing.” Our minister’s message for this service is titled “Feast on Your Life” – we hope you will join us!
“The time will come,
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger
who was your self.”
~ Derek Wolcott
If you missed any of the first three services in this series, the texts to the readings and message may be found in the Sermon Archive.
Common Read of Just Mercy – Discussion Groups Scheduled
If you’ve been procrastinating or are just behind in your reading, it’s time to step up the effort because our discussion groups for the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson have been scheduled. We are offering three different dates to choose from; the same two-hour session format will be repeated on each date (though if folks are wanting extended opportunities for discussion, we’ll play that by ear as we go along…). The dates are as follows:
- Thursday, October 22 - 7-9:00 p.m. - tomorrow night!
- Thursday, October 29 - 7-9:00 p.m.
- Sunday, November 1 - 1-3:00 p.m.
Our minister, Dawn Daniels, will be facilitating the Thursday evening sessions. The Sunday session facilitator will be announced at a later date.
Clean Up Day - This Saturday!
Grab your rakes and join us for a clean up day at UUFCM. We will be raking falling leaves into the street, clean up flower beds, visit, and eat together. We will be working this Saturday, October 24, 10-4 pm. The more folks who come, the sooner we will be done. Lunch will be provided! Call Laura McBride if you have questions.
Special Offering – This Sunday, October 25
The UUFCM Board has decided that we need to make a monthly special offering to supplement our minister’s discretionary fund. There has been a decided increase in requests for assistance and funds are needed to purchase bus passes and gift cards for groceries and other personal items for those in need. We will be taking this offering on the third Sunday of each month – it didn’t happen last week due to ministerial error… :)
Donate to CMU Public Radio and Help Publicize UUFCM!
It is time to pool our donations to CMU broadcasting. Write your checks to “CMU Broadcasting” or “CMU Public Radio,” and give them to Mary Alsager. We will be collecting the next two Sundays, October 25 and November 1.
Community Action Dialogues on Black Lives Matter The next meeting of the Community Action Dialogues on Black Lives Matter will be held this coming Tuesday, October 27, at 7:00 pm in Anspach 161 on CMU’s campus. After the first successful meeting to raise awareness of the issues in Mt. Pleasant, action teams are being formed to work to make Mt. Pleasant and the CMU community safe and welcoming for everyone. Please come and join in the conversation and planning. For further information, contact Joyce Henricks ([email protected]) or Norma Bailey ([email protected]). |
This year the UUFCM will be collecting children’s books – actually the range is pre-school through young adult – as our contribution to the Christmas Outreach program this year. If you would like to donate any new or very slightly used books to this effort, please contact Beth Macleod at 989.772.0595 or by email at [email protected]

Let no one think that the birth of humanity is to be felt without terror.
The transformations that await us cost everything in the way of courage and sacrifice.
Let no one be deluded that a knowledge of the path can substitute
for putting one foot in front of the other.
~ Mary Caroline Richards
