Laughter is carbonated holiness.

The Christmas Outreach program – facilitated by Immanuel Lutheran Church – is still in need of donations…the sign-up for assistance this year has surpassed the donation rate. They are specifically looking for sweats, boots, coats, and fleeces, especially for children and infants. We realize this is very last minute, but if your receive this message in time and can manage getting a donation together, your donation can be dropped off at Finch Field House on CMU campus today from 2:00-7:00 p.m. Thank you!
Worship Matters
Our worship theme for this coming Sunday, December 14, is “On Wonder…and Joy.” “To be joyful in the universe is a brave and reckless act. The courage for joy springs not from the certainty of human experience, but the surprise. Our astonishment at being loved, our bold willingness to love in return – these wonders promise the possibility of joyfulness, no matter how often and how harshly love seems to be lost. Therefore, despite the world's sorrows, we give thanks for our loves, for our joys and for the continued courage to be happily surprised.” ~ Molly Fumia
- Candlelight Service – We will gather for a special holiday candlelight service on Wednesday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m. This service will be a celebration woven with poetry, stories and songs of the season. We hope you will join us!
- Upcoming Sunday service themes can be found here.
Holiday Tea - This Sunday
Our annual Holiday Tea & Treats is following the service this Sunday, December 14, 2014. If you didn't have a chance to sign up, please bring a goodie you are willing to share, or consider assisting in setting up or clean up. Our children will be joining us, so prepare for merriment and fun! Any sharing of teapots is also appreciated!
Movie Night
Movie Night is every second Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UU Center. The movie for this Saturday, December 13th is Babette's Feast (Danish, 1987). An exquisite, delicately told tale of two minister's daughters who pass up love and fame to remain in their small Danish village. They grow old, using religion as a substitute for living life...and then take in Parisian refugee Stéphane Audran, a woman with a very special secret. Subtle, funny and deeply felt, with several wonderful surprises (including an extraordinary feast); an instant masterpiece that deservedly earned a Best Foreign Film Academy Award. A lovely Christmas movie. Contact Jim Dealing with any questions - [email protected] or (989) 772-0269.
Intergenerational Candle
One of our traditions at the winter holiday season is to create a candle for the intergenerational worship service the Sunday before Christmas Day, which this year is December 21. To do this, we ask that everyone bring in left-over candle bits from home which are then made into a candle representing all of us. Then, on that Sunday, the candle is lit by the oldest and the youngest member present at the worship service that day.
Therefore, will you please bring to church a piece of an old candle from your home this Sunday, December 14. There is a basket in the entry way labeled “Candle Bits” where you can leave your contribution.
Caroling Event
UUFCM kids and adult choirs are going to carol at two senior living centers on Sunday, December 14th at 1:30 p.m., following the Holiday Tea. We will meet first at the fellowship, and we are expected at Prestige Center at 2:00 p.m. Lyric booklets are available. Please contact Roze Bentley, Director of Religious Education at (989) 400-7674 with any questions.
Sewing Circle
Sewing Circle will meet this Monday, December 15th, but not on January 5th. The next sewing circle will meet on Monday, January 19 (which is Martin Luther King Day).
Craft Supplies for RE
RE needs collage materials. We could use magazines, colored paper, scraps of bulletin board edging, colored and/or double-sided tape, glitter glue. We are looking to stock up on paper craft supplies to keep young hands busy during the cold weather ahead. Thanks, and try to stay warm!
A Special Joy to Share
Marriage bells will be ringing for Paulette Moerdyk and Roy Dale Catlin on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 5:30 at the Dunning Memorial Chapel in Alma. We wish them much love, joy and contentment on their journeys together. If you want to share your wishes, you can send them to the couple at 7327 Lads Court, Alma, MI 48801.
First Sunday Infant Pantry
Thank you very much for your generous donations to the Infant Pantry collection. It is much appreciated as baby items are relatively expensive and get used up quickly. The good news is that new mothers have been encouraged to breast feed and then grind up their home-made dinners for their babies so that the needs for formula and processed baby food in jars are way down. What they need right now are diapers and pull-ups (sizes 4, 5), creams for diaper rash, no-tear shampoos, baby body lotion, and baby wipes. Contact Tom Moffit (772-1602; [email protected]) if you have more questions. We will collect items every first Sunday, but if you want to drop off something in between, Tom will gladly take it. Again, thanks so much for your generosity.
Changes to Joyful Noise Choir Schedule
Beginning this Sunday, December 7, we will have choir rehearsals on Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Please be advised that we will no longer have rehearsal on Wednesday evenings.
I believe in kindness. Also in mischief. Also in singing,
especially when singing is not necessarily prescribed.
