“Again and again, the cicada’s untiring cry pierced the sultry summer air
like a needle at work on thick cotton cloth.”
~ Yukio Michima
Dawn Daniels will be leading our worship service this Sunday, August 17 - her first as UUFCM minister. The message theme for the morning is “A Cauldron of Changes.” As this congregation finds itself yet once again in a process of ministerial transition, Dawn will lead us in a reflection that draws from her own experiences with change over this past year as well as an introduction to her vision for our ministry together. We hope you will join us!
The service theme for Sunday, August 24 will be “What It Means to Be Here,” a reflection on the question of why we come together each week as a community of faith...and just what is it that makes this sacred space and time? Why do we do this thing we do?
Our yearly ingathering commonly known as the Ingathering/Water Service will be held Sunday, September 14th. Please bring water from your travels to share at the service. In addition, we will be dedicating the Peace Pole our children purchased. Please join us for both events!
Make Joyful Noise!
Come, come, whoever you are. The 2014-2015 choir season is officially beginning this Wednesday evening, August 13, 2014 from 7:00-8:00. If you have ever been in a choir, or have always wanted to be in a choir, or just enjoy singing, please join us. We are in need of some additional voices. Although we do try and sing on the majority of Sundays from September through June, we are very flexible and are happy to have you when you are able to be with us even if it is once a month. We also have some members who are unable to be at the rehearsals on Wednesday evenings and sing with us on Sunday mornings. If you are interested and have questions or would like a personal invitation, please contact Chris Bauerle or any of the other choir members and we will be happy to talk with you. My contact information: [email protected] or 989-330-8457. Our first Sunday service of the year will be this Sunday, August 17.
Fellowship Life Meeting - Sunday, August 17th
There are two items for your participation. We need a membership vote to elect Chris Bailey as a co-Treasurer to the board. His primary role is to fill in with counting Sunday plate collection, making deposits, paying staff and bills when our primary Treasurer, David Macleod is unavailable. Secondly, we will provide an opportunity for a Q & A with our minister, Dawn Daniels. She debuts this Sunday in the pulpit. She is looking forward to hearing our questions!
RE Needs Volunteers
September is right around the corner, and as well as back-to-school, our youth will be resuming religious education curriculum. We are very excited to be offering diversity and social justice as our theme for this year's programs. We need teachers! All you need to be a successful RE volunteer is to be caring and enthusiastic. We have great curriculum prepared, ready to be placed in helping hands. Each volunteer will be teaching with a partner and time commitments are somewhat flexible. If you have any availability we would love to have your help energizing our youth with a UU's commitment to social justice. Please contact the Director of Religious Education, Roze Finn, with questions at (989) 400-7674 or [email protected].
Directory Update - Last Call!
A directory proof is available on our website. Please check to see that your contact information is correct - if not, please send any corrections to our administrative assistant no later than Sunday, August 17th. Thank you!

Thrift Shop
Our UUFCM account for consignments at the Thrift Shop is still open. They take seasonal used clothing and small household items for sale to those in need, and some of those can be put on consignment which means that half of the sale price comes back to us, to be used as needed. The Shop is located at 307 S. Mission and is open from 10-4 daily. Just tell the clerk on duty that you have items for the U-3 account or for donation. Local children (ages 3-4) benefit by having a free preschool available for them. For further details, see Tom Moffit or call 772-1602.
First Friday Potlucks Are Back!
Given the rising popularity of our potluck gatherings, we are organizing our dinners better with PerfectPotluck.com. The potluck organizers are planning theme-based meals this year. There are many to choose from, such as: Mexican, Italian, Finger Food/Fork Free, Breakfast, Kebobs, Spaghetti, Soup & Salad, Subs, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Casserole, Southern Foods, Chili, Vegetarian, Tail Gate, or Wild Game...to name a few.
The potlucks will continue to meet on the first Friday of each month except for January 2, 2015 and July 3, 2015. Your dish should serve 6-10 persons. Laura McBride is kicking off the first themed potluck on Sept. 5th with the theme being Comfort Food Favorites! If you are interested in attending, please go to Perfectpotluck.com and enter coordinator last name: McBride and password: 3619.
Conversation and/or games may follow, so bring your favorites of either or both! See you then!
