Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear?
~ Lao Tzu
Come, come, whoever you are...our 2015-2016 choir season is underway, and we’re starting our new weekly schedule of Wednesday evening rehearsals tonight, Wednesday, September 9, from 7:30-8:30 p.m.! We also rehearse on Sunday mornings prior to worship from 9:30-10:15 a.m. The Joyful Noise Choir will be co-directed this year by Chris Bauerle and Dawn Daniels. If you have ever been in a choir, or have always wanted to be in a choir…or just enjoy singing, please join us. If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact Dawn Daniels: [email protected] or 763-6315.
In Worship
This Sunday, September 13 is our annual multigenerational Water Service/Fall Ingathering celebration. We invite you to bring a small container of water collected from a special place you visited during summer travels or perhaps from closer to home. Pouring it into a common vessel, we symbolically share our inner and outer journeys. Our message for the morning will center on the human right to safe, affordable water. We hope you will attend this very special service.
Attention Parents and Concerned Family Members of Youth
Our RE program year will kick off the Sunday after our Ingathering Ceremony. Ingathering will be this Sunday, September 13th and it is a multigenerational service. We encourage you to bring youth to experience this service. The Kickoff event will be on Sunday, September 20th, immediately following service. Regular RE classes will resume this Sunday. After service we will have a picnic potluck. Hotdogs will be provided, please bring a picnic side to share. We will discuss each of the programs in greater detail and answer all your and your youth's questions about our exciting upcoming programs. We hope you will join us for this opportunity to reconnect and tell our stories from the past summer as we build toward the future. Please contact Roze Bentley (989) 400-7674 with any questions.
First (2nd) Friday Potluck - September 11
The hosts this month are Joyce Henricks (989-773-4709; [email protected]) and Janis Shinn (989-400-3724). The theme for the evening is 'A Potpourri of Good Food’. Your dish should serve 6-10 persons. If you are interested in attending, please sign in at Perfect Potluck.
Calling All Jedi Masters! RE NEEDS YOU… …for a critical mission: instructing our younglings in mindfulness and the ways of the Force behind all life. The 2015-2016 RE program year is gearing up for launch and we are still in need of volunteer teachers for Sunday mornings. We are also looking for folks to help with various behind-the-scenes tasks for our program, such as light sewing or those handy with tools. And for those Star Wars buffs among you, we could use donations of decor for our room. |
It is time to talk about a national crisis. Almost weekly, we hear of another incident that begins when a person of color meets with the suspicion of the police or private citizens and ends in violence. A growing movement, under the banner of “Black Lives Matter,” is challenging communities across the country to understand the roles that racial suspicion and racially-targeted criminal justice policies are playing in enforcing the color lines in our own neighborhoods.
Let’s make this moment count by taking steps to make our community a more just, welcoming, and safe place for all people. The Community Action Dialogues starting in September will provide a chance to learn from each other about common experiences of people of color in our communities and how to work together to achieve the community and country we know we can be.
Whether you are a student or a life-long resident, please join the conversation on Tuesday, September 15 at 7:00 pm at Veterans Memorial Library in downtown Mount Pleasant. This is a project of the Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group. With questions, please contact Joyce Henricks at [email protected] or 989-773-4709.
Pathway to Membership
The Pathway to Membership in the UUFCM is a three-step process – an introduction/orientation to Unitarian Universalism* as a faith tradition as well as our particular fellowship history and journey; a session devoted to exploring more deeply the expectations and blessings of membership and participation in “shared ministry”; and finally the “signing of the book” as part of a new member welcome celebration in a worship service. *Even if you have a lot of knowledge about UUism, our first session provides background on the history and culture of this congregation which would be important for an aspiring member.
Welcome to UU
This class is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. Welcome to UU classes will be offered every month on the fourth Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sessions will run approximately ninety minutes. Our next Welcome to UU class is scheduled for Sunday, September 27 at 1:00 p.m.
Committing to UUFCM
The Committing to UUFCM class is designed for those who are ready to make the membership commitment. This class explores the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour* session (*depending on the size of the group – may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Two upcoming Committing to UUFCM class options are scheduled for Saturday, September 19 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, October 3, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
New Member Celebration
New members will be welcomed and recognized by the congregation on Sunday, October 11, 2015 during our 10:30 a.m. worship service. We hope you will participate in this celebration!
To sign up for a Pathway to Membership class or participate in the New Member Celebration, please contact Kirsten at [email protected] or speak with UUFCM Minister Dawn Daniels.
UUA 2015-16 “Common Read”
The UUFCM will be taking part in this year’s UUA Common Read of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. You can read more about this book at the UUA website. Books are available now for just $10.00 at the fellowship (see Dawn or designee, when she finds one…) or you can purchase one at Amazon.com. Obtain your copy…or share with a friend…and read it before our study groups begin in October (when the UUA study guide comes out) – stay tuned!
Chemical Sensitivity
We have at least two members who regularly attend worship who suffer from chemical sensitivity to fragrances...and there may be more we’re unaware of. The fragrances we apply to our bodies can cause breathing difficulty for others. You will soon be seeing PSA messages about this posted in strategic places around the UU Center. Let us all be mindful of this concern as we prepare ourselves for worship and group gatherings.

You cannot have peace without human rights, democracy,
gender equality, and clean water. Look to the root causes of war
and you will find, in their reverse, the root foundations of peace.
