eNews for Thursday, January 23

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, January 26 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Integrity.” Please join us!

“Integrity means aligning one’s actions with one’s mission and values. At the personal level, this means consciously speaking, acting, voting, and spending our money in ways that are harmonious with our values. At the congregational level, this means bylaws and budgets and policies aligned with the Fellowship’s mission. How can we achieve greater integrity as individuals and as a congregation?”

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

January 26: Integrity
February 2: Diversity: This Is Who We Are
February 9: Egbert Ethelred Brown, the First Black Unitarian Minister

We meet on 4th Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the UU Center, January through June. We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun! Join us!

Annual Congregational Retreat - This Saturday, January 25

“Social Justice: Where Do We Go from Here?” At our annual retreat on Saturday, January 25, we will examine where we have been and where we are as a congregation in terms of our social justice efforts and explore where we might want to go. The Social Justice Coordinating Team will present several possible directions for the congregation to consider. Breakfast and social time at 8 a.m., followed by the retreat from 9-noon. Be sure to put this important all-congregation retreat on your calendar!

RE Movietime - Following Worship on January 26

The RE program is going to be showing Hidden Figures (PG), which follows the story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA in the 1960's. A wonderful movie for all ages, children are invited to bring blankets and pillows, and popcorn and snacks will be provided as well.

Welcome to UU Orientation - January 26

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately two hours. For more info or to register for Welcome to UU, contact Laura McBride at 989.772.5512 or Lmcbride010@gmail.com.

UU History Webinar - Begins This Monday, January 27

Join Drew Frantz to watch a 5-week webinar on UU history presented by a UU minister in Cincinnati. We'll meet on Mondays from 7:45-9 p.m. to watch together, then have a brief discussion afterwards. Please contact Drew if you are interested.

Webinar: Whose History Is It Anyway?

Presenter: Reverend Connie Simon
How much do you know about the roots of our faith tradition? Explore the history of Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism in this five-week class. Using an anti-colonialist, multicultural lens, we’ll look beyond the traditional, dusty facts of history and examine to see how our faith was born and how it has developed and evolved over the years.
Topics include: Whose Story Is It Anyway, Why History Matters, The Roots of Liberal Religion, The Universalists, The Unitarians, Transcendentalism, Westward Expansion, Humanism, Consolidation, Principles and Sources, Drawing the Circle Wider, Indigenous, Latinx, Black and Non-Black People of Color, GLBTQ, and Disability.

Last Call for Directory Updates

Our early February deadline for printing the hard copy for the Directory 2020 is fast approaching! Many of you have already contacted us with updates, but we are still waiting for some more. Please check the online Directory – if you need the password, contact Gisela or Kirsten. Final deadline is January 31. Thank you for your assistance.

New Small Group for Discussion & Support - January 26, 12:30-2 pm

All are welcome at a small group led by Drew which will meet monthly on Sundays beginning this Sunday, January 26. This group will be for personal connection and mutual support, as well as discussing the theme of the month. This month is Integrity. The other Sundays will be Feb. 23, March 15, April 19, May 24, and June 24. If enough people are interested, a second time during the week will be offered.

Soulful Sundown - February 6

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 6 p.m. This month’s theme is Resilience. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs.
Donations for the pizza dinner at 7pm are appreciated but not necessary.

First Friday Potluck - February 7

Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the February birthdays of Annette Pratt, George Lentz, Katie Zapoluch, Kris Los, Lexi Calhoun, Laura McBride, Elliott Moreno, and Glenn Lewandos.

UUFCM Book Club - February 12

Olive Kitteridge is the highly acclaimed novel by Elizabeth Strout. The author intertwines the lives of the small town inhabitants of Crosby, Maine with her main character. As Olive mingles in their existence, it's left up to the reader to determine if she is a loathsome busybody or a redeeming soul. Join us on February 12th at 1:00 and make your case for Olive!

Refreshments for Coffee Hour

If you like to have a variety of refreshments for the coffee hour, please bring some on a Sunday coming up. Sign up on the bright green sheet on the bulletin board left of the exit door in the social hall. You can bring sweets (cookies or muffins), savory items (pretzels, chips, cheese or popcorn), or fruits and vegetables. Please do not bring nuts (including peanuts) as we have members with nut allergies. If you cannot bring refreshments, please consider a financial donation (in the cookie jar next to the coffee pot). Thank you so much for your generous support!

Remind App

Please send Laura McBride your phone number and/or email address to receive service cancellation notices or special announcements. This is the easiest way! Questions? Contact Laura McBride (lmcbride010@gmail.com; 989.772.5512).
