Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, October 31 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Day of the Dead.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“We are living in a time of dying, a global pandemic. How is this affecting us emotionally and spiritually? We will use this hour of worship to honor and remember those we have lost, and to consider this piece of wisdom: that death is the end of a life, not the end of a relationship.”

COVID Update

  • We are continuing hybrid services (in- person/Zoom) throughout the month of November. If you wish to attend in-person services in November, please reply to the email from Norma Bailey by Monday, November 1, indicating which three services you would like to attend. Contact Norma (baile1nj@cmich.edu) if you have questions.

  • Right now, small groups up to ten people can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
While the Board of Trustees has approved policies for Fellowship gatherings as we seek to reconnect in person safely, please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

If you are interested in helping any of these teams or committees, please fill out the Volunteer Opportunity Form 2021-2022 if you haven’t already.

Women’s Circle - Tonight!

We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun! We meet on 4th Thursdays at 7pm.

Congregational Home Harvest Meals

Given that we can’t gather in our traditional Harvest Feast this year, we are instead hosting Congregational Harvest Home Meals on Sunday, November 21, 2021, gathering at 4pm in various homes. We are encouraging all new members and friends, as well as “oldies,” to join us so that you can get to know some other people in the congregation. Please sign up for a home meal using this link.
We will gather in each home at 4pm, and Drew will join us via Zoom at 4:30 to briefly speak with all of us at the same time. We will also have our traditional Guest at Your Table (GAYT) plate collection at each home (Drew will explain).

The requirement for all home meals is that everyone attending must be vaccinated unless otherwise indicated.

Once a host has a full table, they will contact you asking you to help provide a side dish, salad, or dessert to complement the main dish, as well as letting you know contact information of who else will be at the home meal to make it easy to share rides if you wish.

If you have questions, please contact Norma Bailey (989.560.3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu.

Help with Dinners for Homeless Shelter

The UUFCM will be providing dinners for the homeless shelter guests (ICRH) at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, November 16, and Friday, November 19. If you are interested in participating, please contact Joyce Henricks (Joyce.henricks@cmich.edu).

Sunday Strolls

Sunday, October 31 will be 12:30 at Deerfield Park. Annette will meet people at the first parking lot in the park. If you don't have an Isabella County Park pass there is a $6 fee to get in. Deerfield Park is located on M20 west of Mt. Pleasant.

November dates, places, and times are to come! This is something new so adjustments will be made as needed. Any questions? Please call or text Jen Prout at 989-400-3130.

CUUPs Celebrates Samhain - October 31

Samhain (pronounced SAH-win) is a holiday known by another name - Halloween. The ancients believed this was the time of year when the veil between the living and passed was the thinnest. It is a time to remember those who have passed before us and listen to their stories which still live on inside us. It is also the Pagan “new year” with death and birth being two sides of the same coin. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6:00pm, in-person only, and there will be no potluck.

Soulful Sundown - November 4

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 7 p.m. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs. This month’s theme is Holding History. This will be a hybrid event. Join us in person if you are vaccinated (and please wear your mask), or join us via Zoom.

Coffee House Open Mic - November 5

Bring your favorite beverage and join us for a coffee house on the first Friday of the month at 7pm. We will follow an open mic format: anyone can share some music or poetry. Aim for 5 minutes for your song or poem. Signing up ahead of time is encouraged: contact Drew at minister.uufcm.org or 440-935-0129. Get ready for a groovy time! This will be a hybrid event. Join us in person if you are vaccinated (and please wear your mask), or join us via Zoom.

Social Justice News: Voting Rights

React to the Redistricting Maps in October

The Michigan Independent Redistricting Commission (MICRC) needs your input about its draft maps in October—this is the month when the MICRC can still tweak its maps. By November, the public will only be able to urge the MICRC to use one or another entire set of maps, that is Set A or Set B for State House districts, for example.

  • 10/4 - Draft maps available
  • One may provide input at any time via the MICRC’s portal.
  • 11/5 - MICRC will vote on proposed maps. (Public may comment for 45 days but only yes or no for an entire set of maps.)
  • 12/30 - First date MICRC may vote on final maps.

Information on Voter Suppression Ballot Initiative

Secure MI Vote submitted an initiative petition, a proposed law, to the State Board of Canvassers, which approved the summary’s wording of it. Signature gathering may have commenced on Oct. 1. The initiative would suppress voting insofar as it:
  • mandates that people disclose partial Social Security numbers when registering to vote.
  • restricts options for registered voters to verify their identity. Acceptable forms of photo ID would include a driver’s license, state ID card, passport, military ID, tribal ID, or student ID issued by a university, junior college, or community college.
  • requires voters applying for an absentee ballot to include their driver’s license or state ID number, along with the last four digits of their Social Security number, on their application.
  • prohibits election officials from sending or providing absentee applications unless asked.
  • spends $3 million providing free photo identification.
  • bans charitable contributions, including volunteer time, to help administer elections.
  • allows the Legislature to adopt the law without a vote of the people and block a peoples’ referendum vote after adoption.
Protect voters’ rights! Decline to sign!

How to Help Maintain Democracy

One of the easiest things you can do is sign up for Voters Not Politicians’ “Dial for Democracy” action. They alert you when legislative action is going to occur in Lansing and give you talking points and the link to send your message. Super easy – it takes ten minutes to complete – and it makes a difference!

Smithsonian Voting Rights Exhibit at Veterans Memorial Library
October 9 - November 17, 2021. Hours vary.
Voices and Votes
is based on a major exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. This Museum on Main Street adaption will have many of the same dynamic features: historical and contemporary photos: educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos, and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voters memorabilia, and protest material. Find more information about the traveling exhibition here.

WCMU is hosting a film screening event – you are invited!

We hope to see you at our free exclusive film screening and panel discussion.
Monday, November 8th at 7pm
We invite you to a virtual exclusive screening and conversation of the new PBS series, “American Veteran,” a four-part documentary series tracing the veteran experience across the arc of American history and exploring the present-day divide between civilian and veteran communities. From the citizen-soldiers returning from the Revolution to today’s warrior class, it is a deeply moving story, illuminating the veteran experience and drawing civilian viewers into an unfamiliar culture. To learn more about the series, visit PBS.org/AmericanVeteran.
