eNews for Thursday, August 13

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom this Sunday, August 16 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Finding Your Calling.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

We will also take a moment in this service to acknowledge 2020 high school graduates Tolby Busch and Roman Damer-Daigle.

“We all strive to live a life of purpose and meaning. Some of us find a calling in our work; some find a calling in family life or in a cause we serve. It’s never too late to listen for one’s calling and to take steps to follow it.”

President’s Report - Guy Newland

On a monthly basis, the board president will report highlights of the UUFCM Board meeting.

At its July 12 meeting, the Board asked me to support Drew in seeking a waiver of a Ministerial Fellowship Committee rule that, for practical purposes, would prevent him from accepting a call to become our settled minister. Because of that committee’s schedule, we cannot expect a response until late in September.

The Board also voted that UUFCM accept the invitation to join the UU Fellowship of Oberlin in ordaining Drew on July 25. That was an incredibly beautiful Zoom ceremony. Congratulations to Reverend Frantz!

The Board voted to establish a new committee, the Communications Team. Sally Armstrong–who has past experience in this role with another UU church–has agreed to serve as chair. Details will be worked out at the Board’s upcoming retreat, on August 15.

No one applied for our advertised Director of Religious Education position, but Kendra Peffers will stay on through January 10, 2021.

Heard at General Assembly…

Several members of our congregation took advantage of this year’s unique opportunity to attend General Assembly online. Those of us who participated will be talking about our experiences during upcoming Sunday services. In the meantime, we’ll be using the eNews to share some of what we learned at GA.
If you attended GA sessions and would like to share your thoughts in the eNews, please send contributions to Jessica Jernigan.

This week we’re hearing from Candi Tomlinson. She participated in sessions on the LGBTQ+, Indigenous Americans, and anti-racism, among others. Here are a few moments that caught her attention:

Mary Benard, Editorial Director of the UUA Publications Office had this to say:

“The biggest issue of elder LGBTQ people is invisibility. Invisibility is difficult; visibility is a good thing.”

“Young people are the conscience of our country.”

This is from a workshop on Indigenous people.

And NPR’s Howard Bryant had this to say about the uprisings that have happened in response to George Floyd’s death:

“We have rights!...This country belongs to us, too. We are not asking anymore.”

Fellowship Life Meeting - Sunday, August 16

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

Social Justice Special Plate Collection - Sunday, August 16

This Sunday, a collection will be taken to support the CCN Food Pantry where the need in this community is greater than ever, serving 20% more families who are in need this year. You can donate online to the Social Justice Special Plate Collections Fund at our website or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with CCN Food Pantry in the memo.

Path to Membership Workshop - August 22 at 1pm

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this one and a half hour interactive session, we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry. Please contact Laura McBride (989.772.5512 or Lmcbride010@gmail.com) by Friday, August 21 if you will attend so we may plan accordingly. Join us via Zoom.

Voting Rights News

Volunteers Needed

The League of Women Voters is going to provide information about voting to the people who use the services of the Strickler Center (Infant Pantry, Care Store, and Food Pantry) at 1114 W. High Street. Every other Wednesday and Saturday through October, families in cars slowly drive through to get products they need to survive. The League will also have a table to pass out voting information, and this is where we need volunteers – two people per session. Click this sign-up sheet link - then type in your name and contact information.  Further information will be provided once we have the volunteer list. If you have questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey. Please join us in this effort.

Are You in Need of Assistance?

At this time of social distancing, it is important that we keep in close contact via technology. Drew has encouraged you to reach out to him if you want to talk to him via email or phone/text (minister@uufcm.org; 440.935.0129). Please do so if you need emotional support or to share your concerns. If you are experiencing financial hardship, the minister's discretionary fund may be able to help. Please contact Drew for more information. Assistance from this fund is strictly confidential.

For those of you who are shut in and can’t get groceries or your meds, let Gisela know (gbmoffit@gmail.com; 989.772.1602). We now have 6 volunteers who are willing to pick up your orders for you. Many thanks in advance to those willing to help out.
