eNews for Thursday, August 30

What will mess you up most in life is the picture in your head of how it is supposed to be.

Worship Matters

Rest from your labors (see what we did there?) and join us for worship this Sunday, September 2 as we begin our exploration of what it means to be a people of vision. Our minister’s message for the morning is titled “To Dream – To Labor.” We hope to see you there!

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

September Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Vision?
September 9: Fall Ingathering – The Water Service
September 16: What We Envisioned: Reflections on General Assembly 2018

Summer Worship Resources and Feedback Request

A compilation of “readings for reflection” resources from our summer worship series along with the texts to a couple of the personal reflections shared in worship have been posted to our website. We will be posting more of the shared reflections when we receive them.

So…how did you experience the summer worship series format? We would love to receive feedback on your experiences of it all – from the simplified order of service to the more interactive reflection component…even the sanctuary seating set-up – we want to know how this variation in worship design was received. As your minister is a tad “survey phobic” (she’s working on it), she has requested that those willing to provide feedback to email your comments to Kirsten Keeton, our administrative assistant at [email protected]. Please know that all feedback is welcome, even if you think it could be viewed as negative. This is how we grow and learn together. Thank you.

RE News

A Water Festival is being held for children (and those young at heart) on September 9 after service! There will be a water-balloon toss, water bucket competition, and other fun water-themed activities. Feel free to wear a swimsuit if you are determined to get wet!

We mark the start of a new year for the RE program with our RE Kickoff on September 16! After children leave service at the regular time, they are invited to enjoy games, crafts, and snacks in celebration of another year of RE. If you have any questions, please contact Kendra Peffers at [email protected]. We hope to see many young faces at these events!

Make Joyful Noise!

The Joyful Noise Choir has begun rehearsals for the fall! We meet on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. If you like to sing - even if you don’t read music - now would be a perfect time to join us as we are beginning to learn new music! Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or [email protected] if you have questions.

Infant Pantry Collection - September 2

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; [email protected]) with questions.

First Friday Potluck - September 7

Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

We will also be celebrating the September birthdays of Alicia Genia, Carol Messick, and Gisela Moffit. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Reflection on the Planned Parenthood National Convention

Planned Parenthood held their national convention in Detroit over the last weekend in July – and our own Candi Tomlinson attended! As our newest member of the UUFCM Social Justice Coordinating Team and our current representative on MUUSJN’s Interfaith Reproductive Justice Coalition, we asked that she share a summary report of her experience and learnings from the convention. You may read her complete report here.

Veggies from George

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, and cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.

A Way to Raise Your Voice

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has proposed changes to the K-12 social studies curriculum.  The new standards would eliminate any mention of LGBT rights, the NAACP, Roe v. Wade, climate change and “core democratic values.”  The final draft version of the Social Studies Standards: 2007 to 2018 Side-by-Side Comparison is available for review and online public comment until September 30, 2018. Even if you are not a social studies teacher, you know what you would like your children or grandchildren to be learning, so the Social Justice Coordinating Team encourages you to take time to read the proposed standards and comment!

Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights Interfaith Conference

Inclusive Justice and the Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN), along with other organizations, is offering an interfaith conference titled “Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights” on Friday, October 19, from 9 am-4 pm in Clawson, Michigan. Included will be a press conference on the conversion therapy controversy. Cost is $10.00, and you can register on-line at inclusivejustice.org or via snail mail, and sign up for the workshops in which you have interest. Norma Bailey is attending, and she can take up to four others with her; please contact her at [email protected] for further information and/or to arrange transportation.
