eNews for Thursday, August 6

RE Garden News

Children began harvesting our veggies from the well-tended UU Youth Garden last week, resulting in many potatoes, along with tomatoes, beans, and chives! Thank you to all the children who were all too happy to get their hands a little dirty and help us harvest our garden. All produce is donated to the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen, and we were very happy to bring them such a bounty of veggies from the children's first harvest of the year. Families who want to sign up to tend to our garden and help us continue to harvest can visit this document and put their names down for a weekend or two: RE Garden Care Sign-Up.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom this Sunday, August 9 for our last Summer Series service to discuss “What is important to you this year? How have your priorities changed?” The Zoom call starts at 10am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

Summer Service Series

When Drew is not with us this summer, our worship services will be different, more interactive and intimate, giving us a chance to get to know one another better, similar to what we engaged in last year. After the lighting of the chalice and honoring our joys and concerns, each week, in small random groups, we will engage in discussion of a topic announced in advance – here in the eNews and on our website. After the discussion time, the services will close with a song and a closing benediction.
If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

August 16: Finding Your Calling
August 23: Anti-Racism Faith and Action
August 30: Courage

Heard at General Assembly…

Several members of our congregation took advantage of this year’s unique opportunity to attend General Assembly online. Those of us who participated will be talking about our experiences during upcoming Sunday services. In the meantime, we’ll be using the eNews to share some of what we learned at GA.
If you attended GA sessions and would like to share your thoughts in the eNews, please send contributions to Jessica Jernigan.

This week we hear from Gisela Moffit. Two ideas that caught her attention:

The pandemic has shown us that radical social changes are possible.

We are all responsible for taking the long view—one that extends beyond our lifetime—when it comes to change.

She also shared this quotation,

“We all take shifts for the revolution.”

Soulful Sundown - Tonight!

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 7 p.m. This month the theme is Courage. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs. Join us via Zoom.

Coffee House Open Mic - August 7 at 7pm

Bring your favorite beverage and join us for a virtual coffee house on the first Friday of the month at 7:00. We will follow an open mic format: anyone can share some music or poetry. Aim for 5 minutes for your song or poem. Signing up ahead of time is encouraged: contact Drew at minister.uufcm.org or 440-935-0129. Get ready for a groovy time! Join us via Zoom.

Path to Membership Workshop - August 22 at 1pm

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this one and a half hour interactive session, we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry. Please contact Laura McBride (989.772.5512 or [email protected]) by Friday, August 21 if you will attend so we may plan accordingly. Join us via Zoom.

Voting Rights News

Michigan’s Faith Community and Voting Rights Event - Today at 6:30pm

On the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, faith leaders in Michigan will reflect on the faith communities’ crucial role in the passing of the Voting Rights Act, discuss the current state of voting rights and call for necessary reforms to protect the vote. Norma Bailey will speak on the panel representing Unitarian Universalism, the Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network (MUUSJN), and UUFCM. The event will be livestreamed on Facebook Live at 6:30 pm.

Volunteers Needed

The League of Women Voters is going to provide information about voting to the people who use the services of the Strickler Center (Infant Pantry, Care Store, and Food Pantry) at 1114 W. High Street. Every other Wednesday and Saturday through October, families in cars slowly drive through to get products they need to survive. The League will also have a table to pass out voting information, and this is where we need volunteers – two people per session. Click this sign-up sheet link - then type in your name and contact information.  Further information will be provided once we have the volunteer list. If you have questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey. Please join us in this effort.

Job Opportunity

Both the City of Mt. Pleasant and Union Township are hiring election inspectors. Find more information and applications on our website.

Environmental Issues News

Dark Waters Webinar

To those of you who may have missed the Sierra Club webinar on the movie “Dark Waters,” here is a chance to check it out. It was very well done and filled with information. We would strongly suggest trying to watch the movie first, if you can.

The Environmental Issues committee invites anyone who is interested in possibly becoming a member of the committee to contact Daniel Davis. Or, you can join one of our meetings - second Mondays at 7pm. We hope to hear from you! Join us via Zoom.

Are You in Need of Assistance?

At this time of social distancing, it is important that we keep in close contact via technology. Drew has encouraged you to reach out to him if you want to talk to him via email or phone/text ([email protected]; 440.935.0129). Please do so if you need emotional support or to share your concerns. If you are experiencing financial hardship, the minister's discretionary fund may be able to help. Please contact Drew for more information. Assistance from this fund is strictly confidential.

For those of you who are shut in and can’t get groceries or your meds, let Gisela know ([email protected]; 989.772.1602). We now have 6 volunteers who are willing to pick up your orders for you. Many thanks in advance to those willing to help out.
