Worship Matters

Our worship services in August are different this summer, more interactive and intimate, giving us a chance to get to know one another better. After the lighting of the chalice and honoring our joys and concerns, each week, in small random groups, we engage in discussion of a topic announced in advance – here in the e-News, in the order of service and on our website. After the discussion time, the services close with a song and a closing benediction.

Our discussion topic for this coming Sunday, August 11, will be “What does it mean to live a good life?” Come join with us as we get to know one another better as we worship together in this summer format.

Community Mural - August 11

Our community mural is off to a wonderful start with fiery bushes, patterned foliage, and a couple completed trees! To give more of UUFCM’s family a chance to contribute to the project, we will be continuing to add to the painting every other Sunday after service beginning again on August 11 until our spots are filled or everyone who wants to contribute has done so. The finished product will then be displayed in the Green Room. Based on one of Burnie Bonnell’s paintings and filled with whatever patterns come to mind, this UUFCM community mural is sure to turn out beautifully!

Adult RE Book Discussion

Jim Dealing will facilitate four discussions of Introducing the Bible: for Skeptics, Seekers and Religious Liberals by John Beuhrens on Sundays, August 4-25, at 12:00 p.m. Contact Jim (989.772.0269; j.dealing@cmich.edu) if interested, and to get one of the five copies he has received from Amazon.

Fellowship Life Meeting - August 18

On the third Sunday of every month the UUFCM Board holds a Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

Welcome Reception for Our New Minister

On September 1, Drew Frantz begins his ministry with our fellowship. We are eagerly looking forward to the next leg of our journey under his leadership. To celebrate this important event, we will have a reception for him and his partner Mary at the library annex immediately after the service.

In order to make this a success, we need your assistance donating food, signing up for setting up or cleaning up after the event. We will set up at the library on Saturday, August 31 at 4 p.m. Food can be brought at that time or on Sunday from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Bring it directly to the Annex, ready to be served. Sign up sheets will be posted in the fellowship hall. For more information contact Laura McBride or Gisela Moffit.

OWL Education Program Begins January 5

During the 2020 spring school semester, UUFCM will be offering Our Whole Lives sexuality education to children in 7-10th grade every Sunday afternoon beginning January 5th and ending April 26th, excluding the Sundays surrounding Spring Break and Easter Sunday. This secular curriculum “helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. With a holistic approach, Our Whole Lives provides accurate, developmentally appropriate information about a range of topics, including relationships, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual health, and cultural influences on sexuality,” (The Unitarian Universalist Association website). This program is free and open to the public, and parents who are interested in registering their children for Our Whole Lives sexuality education can contact our Director of Religious Education, Kendra Peffers, at re.uufcm@gmail.com by October 27th.

Treats for Social Hour Desired (Needed)

Even though our summer services will provide a different format, some things won’t change. Coffee hour with munchies is written in stone. Please consider bringing something (cookies, crackers, fruit, cheese, gluten free treat, etc. No nuts please) for one of the upcoming Sundays in August.
There is a sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall if you want to let us know in advance, but it is not necessary - if you want to share your delicious goodies, don't hesitate to bring them!

Lay Pastoral Care

During our transition, we will offer Lay Pastoral Care to anyone who is going through a difficult time. Gisela Moffit heads the Arms Around team, which provides transportation to doctor appointments, cards/emails/phone calls, preparing and delivering food for those recuperating. Carolyn Hancock will provide lay pastoral care for those who are hurting and need to talk to a caring person one-on-one. Contact Carolyn at 517-881-6006 for an appointment.

Rock Concert for ICRH

New Life Church and Thrive Church are hosting a rock concert with all proceeds to be donated to the Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH) on Friday, August 16, at 6:00 pm. Come “Rock for Restoration” in support of our community day shelter and rotating homeless shelter. Click on the flyer graphic for more information.
