eNews for Thursday, February 20

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, February 23 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Resilience.” Please join us!

“In this multigenerational service we will explore the idea of personal resilience. How do we handle hard times in our lives? What gives us the ability to bounce back? Bring your personal examples of resilience and an
attitude open for fun.”

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

March 1: Toltec Wisdom
March 8: Women’s Suffrage and Susan B. Anthony
March 15: Wisdom of the Generations
March 22: The Wisdom of Generosity
March 29: The Wisdom We Don’t Want to Hear

Circle Supper Sign-Up

Circle Suppers are a social  chance to enjoy a great meal and great conversations with other UUFCM congregants. Guests will sign up on the host sheets in the fellowship hall for suppers scheduled between February 16-April 18. Look for a list of hosts, dates and times on Sunday!

RE Maple Syrup Event - This Sunday, February 23

Families, mark your calendars! On Sunday, February 23rd after service, the RE Program is having a Maple Syrup Event! Aaron Jones has offered to teach the children how to identify a maple tree and tap one for sap using the big maple right outside the church door. To complement the theme of the day, there will be tasty waffles with some of the syrup Aaron collected last year as well.

Following this event, we are also looking for children and families who would be interested in “adopting a tap” – buckets collecting sap from the church maple tree will need to be checked and swapped out, and Aaron is also willing to lend the materials if families want to tap maple trees in their own backyards to help collect! Please let Kendra know at re.uufcm@gmail.com if you or your child(ren) would be interested in adopting a tap. Depending on how much/how quickly sap is collected, there will be a later event where children will have the opportunity to get involved in the syrup-making process too!

Welcome to UU Orientation - February 23

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately two hours. For more info or to register, contact: Laura McBride (989.772.5512; Lmcbride010@gmail.com)

Discussion & Support Group - February 23

All are welcome at a small group led by Drew which meets on 4th Sundays at 12:30. This group will be for personal connection and mutual support, as well as discussing the theme of the month. This month is Resilience. Snacks/light lunch will be provided. Feel free to bring your own lunch if you prefer.

UU History Webinar - February 24

Join Drew Frantz to close a 5-week webinar on UU history presented by a UU minister in Cincinnati. We meet on Mondays from 7:45-9 p.m. to watch, followed by a brief discussion. Feel free to join us even if you missed previously!

UUFCM Women’s Circle - February 27

We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun! We meet on 4th Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the UU Center, January through June. Join us!

Thank You Kris Los!

A big thank you to Kris Los who did a number of maintenance tasks to make our wonderful building look even nicer! She reconnected all the wiring at the floor boards and repaired the broken light in the sanctuary and thoroughly cleaned the floor where the accordion doors had been removed. Your efforts are so appreciated, Kris!

Thank You, Kris Los and Jen Prout!

A big thank you to Kris Los and Jen Prout for not only bringing treats for the memorial service for Laura McBride’s father, Robert McBride, but also for working long hours setting up and cleaning up afterwards. This was our first full-fledged memorial service at our building, and we learned that we need a crew of people to help with setting up and cleaning up just like we do at Harvest Feast.

Soulful Sundown - March 5

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 6 p.m. This month’s theme is Wisdom. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs. Donations for the pizza dinner at 7pm are appreciated but not necessary.

First Friday Potluck - March 6

Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!
The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the March birthdays of Don Rust, Leslie Hildebrandt, Felix Jones, Beth Macleod, Mary McDowell, Victoria Sladek, Daniel Davis, Kevin Daum, and Mik Lifson.

UUFCM Book Club - March 11

We meet on second Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, September through June. We will be reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. Barry Switzer is quoted as saying, “Some people are born on third base and think they hit a triple.” Join us on March 11th to discuss if she really hit that triple or if she is a third base Barbie. Feel free to bring a lunch.

ICRH Volunteers Needed

The Isabella County Restoration House continues to be in need of more volunteers throughout the shelter season. We are particularly in need of people for day shelter shifts (1-4 pm) and intake shifts (4-6:30 pm). To volunteer, submit an application on the website, and then sign-up to volunteer. Should you have questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) or Joyce Henricks (henri1je@cmich.edu).

Conversations That Matter: Michigan Primary

Join Diversity Education for Conversations that Matter from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Bovee UC Rotunda. The evening will feature a discussion among students, faculty, staff, administration and community members on the topic of the Michigan primary. Dinner will be provided. This event is free and open to the public; however, space is limited. Register here to attend.

The Gun Show

Sponsored by the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, The Gun Show, written by Playwright E.M. Lewis, is a one-actor play that explores Ms. Lewis’s unique perspective and relationship with guns and American gun culture. The narrative leans neither left or right but instead centers on the question: Can we talk about this? The presentation is occurring at a number of venues in Michigan. For further information, see the Coalition’s website.
