RE Maple Syrup Event

The sap was certainly flowing on Sunday when we tapped a couple maple trees around the perimeter of the church! Children were able to see/taste tree sap, turn a small amount of it into sugar, learn how to identify maple trees, and learn when/how to tap them... and of course everyone got to sample some of last year's syrup (with waffles) from Aaron Jones’ own collection! A special thank-you goes to Aaron for leading this fun and informational event for the children. Keep an eye out for our white collection buckets in the upcoming weeks – families will be checking them to make sure the sap is still running and the buckets are not overflowing. Fingers crossed for a bountiful syrup season!

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, March 1 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Toltec Wisdom.” Please join us!

“The Toltec were a society of artists and scientists in ancient Mexico. Their Four Agreements offer a good structure to think about morality and truth. The first of the agreements is: “be impeccable with your word—use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

March 8: Women’s Suffrage and Susan B. Anthony
March 15: Wisdom of the Generations
March 22: The Wisdom of Generosity
March 29: The Wisdom We Don’t Want to Hear

News from Our Focused Social Justice Efforts Steering Committees:
Voting Rights and Environmental Concerns

Interested in Voting in the March 10 Presidential Primary?

Because of the changes in Michigan voting laws approved in Proposal 3 in 2018, you can still register to vote and/or vote via an absentee ballot in the March 10 Presidential Primary right up through Election Day. For complete information to help you do so, go to the Michigan Voter Information Center website. We also have hard copy forms available in the foyer of the Fellowship, although you will still have to take them in person to your local city or township clerk, along with proof of residency.

Should you have questions or need help, please feel free to contact David Wagstaff, Jim Moreno, Melissa Nix, or Norma Bailey. If you will need transportation to the polling precincts, please feel free to contact one of us.

A great source of information about the candidates and the issues on your ballot is vote411.org, a non-partisan website sponsored by the League of Women Voters Education Fund.

Environmental Conference on CMU’s Campus

Saturday, March 21 from 9am-1:30pm, on the first floor of the Engineering & Technology building
Central Michigan University and the local chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) are sponsoring a Central Michigan Climate Solutions Summit. This is a great opportunity for us to find out what is being done locally and nationally to implement climate solutions, as well as provide us to make connections and network with others. The keynote speaker is Dr. Andy Hoffman, the Holcim Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at Ross School of Business & School for Environment and Sustainability at U of M, and all reports indicate he is superb! The event is free, but you need to register to learn more about the event’s schedule and so that they know the number of lunches to order. Let’s get a group of us to attend together so that we will be a more informed and inspired people! For more information about the conference and how to participate, download the Call for Participation flyer.

Infant Pantry Collection - March 1

We collect donations for the Infant Pantry on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Electronic donations may be made at ccnfeeds.org/donate. Questions? Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; [email protected]).

Soulful Sundown - March 5

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 6 p.m. This month’s theme is Wisdom. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs. Donations for the pizza dinner at 7pm are appreciated but not necessary.

First Friday Potluck - March 6

Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the March birthdays of Don Rust, Leslie Hildebrandt, Beth Macleod, Mary McDowell, Victoria Sladek, Daniel Davis, Kevin Daum, and Mik Lifson.

UUFCM Book Club - March 11

We meet on second Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, September through June. We will be reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. Barry Switzer is quoted as saying, “Some people are born on third base and think they hit a triple.” Join us on March 11th to discuss if she really hit that triple or if she is a third base Barbie. Feel free to bring a lunch.

ICRH Volunteers Needed

The Isabella County Restoration House continues to be in need of more volunteers throughout the shelter season. We are particularly in need of people for day shelter shifts (1-4 pm) and intake shifts (4-6:30 pm). To volunteer, submit an application on the website, and then sign-up to volunteer. Should you have questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey ([email protected]) or Joyce Henricks ([email protected]).

Conversations That Matter: Michigan Primary

Join Diversity Education for Conversations that Matter from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Bovee UC Rotunda. The evening will feature a discussion among students, faculty, staff, administration and community members on the topic of the Michigan primary. Dinner will be provided. This event is free and open to the public; however, space is limited. Register here to attend.

The Gun Show

Sponsored by the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, The Gun Show, written by Playwright E.M. Lewis, is a one-actor play that explores Ms. Lewis’s unique perspective and relationship with guns and American gun culture. The narrative leans neither left or right but instead centers on the question: Can we talk about this? The presentation is occurring at a number of venues in Michigan through March 19. For further information, see the Coalition’s website.
