eNews for Thursday, February 4

We Have a Minister!

Wait… didn't we already? Yes, but now—by a vote of 63-0—the members of UUFCM have called the Reverend Andrew (Drew) Frantz to serve as our settled minister and he has accepted our call. This means he will be settling down here, staying to minister to us indefinitely. Stability is a good thing, but we have in no way settled for stability over excellence. With Drew, we truly have both. Amen!

Send Signs to Drew

If you made a sign to congratulate Drew and shared it at the worship service on January 31, feel free to send it to Drew at 108 Heidi Court, Mt. Pleasant 48858, or leave it on the white bench in the church foyer.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom this Sunday, February 7 to worship together with Brigitte Bechtold, who will present “A Matter of Health.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Struggling with a serious treatable illness can be devastating, but it is exacerbated in the face of lack of health care and of economic wellbeing. In this service, we will explore some of the other factors that affect health and how our UU values/principles require our awareness.”

Adult Religious Education Class Planned

Plans are underway to offer an adult education class, “Building Your Own Theology,” using a workbook from the UUA. This program examines a series of basic issues concerning religion and spirituality. Unitarian Universalism doesn’t define our beliefs but rather, encourages us all to pursue “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Here’s an opportunity to do just that.

The class will be held on Zoom, with the schedule to be determined. There will be eight meetings starting in March. Jim Dealing and Reverend Drew will facilitate the discussion. Please contact either Jim or Drew to indicate interest by February 15, as we will be ordering the books on February 16.

Expanding Adult Religious Education (RE)

Based on the responses from the all-congregation retreat, there is a good deal of interest in offering more adult religious education. Joyce Henricks (henri1je@cmich.edu) and Stacey Pattison (patti1s@cmich.edu) are willing to put together a plan for multiple kinds of adult RE for the year. If you have ideas of the kinds of adult RE you would like to have offered and/or you are interested in helping to develop this plan, please contact either of them.

New Day Rising Conference

Saturday, February 27 from 12-9pm

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is offering a virtual national conference: “New Day Rising Conference: Identifying Your Congregation’s Next Steps in the Struggle with White Supremacy Culture.” The Board of Trustees is willing to pay for members and friends who wish to participate in this one-day conference. If you are interested, please contact Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu by February 14 so that we can register and participate as a group. Find more information here.

Holiday Tea Plans - Mardi Gras!

This year’s Holiday Tea will take place on Sunday, February 14 in the comfort of our own homes and spaces! Since we’re holding our “Tea” in February this year, we’ve chosen a Mardi Gras theme – thank you to Annette Pratt for purchasing Mardi Gras shaped cookie cutters! Annette Pratt, Kris Los, and Jen Prout will be baking cookies for everyone. The idea is to enjoy them with tea or your favorite beverage during coffee hour after service. We would like to deliver them to you on Saturday, February 13. Please contact Kris Los at 989-429-0425 or Jen Prout at 989-400-3130 by phone or text and let us know where to deliver your cookies. If you’d rather pick them up yourself, or if you need gluten-free cookies, please contact Annette Pratt at 989-400-0173. Please contact us by Thursday, February 11 so we can plan everything out. Thank you!

Path to Membership Workshop

Saturday, February 20 at 1pm

This workshop is designed for those who want to understand the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this one and a half hour interactive session, we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry. Please contact Laura McBride (Lmcbride010@gmail.com or 989.772.5512) by Friday, February 18 if you will attend so we may plan accordingly. Join us via Zoom.

Remind App - Stay Informed!

We use an app called Remind to send out urgent notices such as service cancellations, special announcements, and fraud alerts. Please send Laura McBride your phone number and/or email address so you can receive these notices. You may add the Remind app to your smartphone, or once your info is added to the app, you will get an invitation from Remind explaining how to add the app to your phone. If you have questions, contact Laura McBride (lmcbride010@gmail.com; 989.772.5512). She is adding names and info as they come in. If you received a notification, please respond to it!

Are You in Need of Assistance?

At this time of social distancing, it is important that we keep in close contact via technology. Drew has encouraged you to reach out to him if you want to talk to him via email or phone/text (minister@uufcm.org; 440.935.0129). Please do so if you need emotional support or to share your concerns. If you are experiencing financial hardship, the minister's discretionary fund may be able to help. Please contact Drew for more information. Assistance from this fund is strictly confidential.

For those of you who are shut in and can’t get groceries or your meds, let Gisela know (gbmoffit@gmail.com; 989.772.1602). We now have 6 volunteers who are willing to pick up your orders for you. Many thanks in advance to those willing to help out.
