eNews for Thursday, January 16

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, January 19 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Honoring Martin Luther King.” Please join us!

“In this multigenerational service, we will explore the history of race through a moving story of two young soldiers in the civil war, connecting their story to the story of Dr. King and of Unitarian Universalism. Why are we still a nation defined by racial division? How are we called to act as an anti-racist, anti-oppression, multicultural religious community?”

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

January 26: Integrity

Minister's Column

Read the Minister's Column at uufcm.org/andrew-frantz.

Path to Membership Workshop - Saturday, January 18

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour session (depending on the size of the group – may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let Laura McBride know one week prior to the class if you need childcare. For more info or to register for a workshop, contact
Laura McBride at 989.772.5512 or [email protected].

Special Offering Collection - This Sunday

The January special offering collection on Sunday, January 19, is for the Isabella County Restoration House, the agency providing temporary shelter for their guests - the homeless population in Isabella County. In addition to providing dinner and overnight housing, ICRH also provides a day shelter so that their guests can get out of the cold while waiting for the shelter to open for the evening. During this time, guests are also helped to develop a plan to move toward self-sufficiency. If you prefer to write a check, please address it to: ICRH.

Fellowship Life Meeting - This Sunday

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

New Discussion/Support Group Forming

Drew will be leading a monthly small group with two goals. First, there will be time at each meeting for personal check-ins, allowing us to support each other and hear one another's truth. Second, there will be a discussion about the worship theme of the month (Integrity for January, Resilience for February, Wisdom for March) with a reading to contemplate and questions to think about. Interested? Please contact Drew, who will set the day and time according to the people who respond.

Calendar Update

Sewing Circle is cancelled for January 20 - see you in February!

Missing DVD Set!

There is thought to be a DVD (set) on UU History that has not been returned to the fellowship. If you come across it on your shelf or in your collection, please return it to Drew Frantz or Laura McBride so it may be available for viewing by others. Thank you!

Remind App for Service Cancellations & Special Announcements

With winter weather upon us, please send Laura McBride your phone number and/or email address so you will receive a notice should a service be cancelled due to inclement weather, or a special event announcement. You may add the Remind App to your smartphone, or once your info is added to the app, you will get an invitation from Remind explaining how to add the app to your phone. If you have questions, contact Laura McBride ([email protected]; 989.772.5512). She is adding names and info as they come in. If you received a notification, please respond to it!

Directory Updates

We print our Directory in early February, and we need your assistance to have it as accurate as possible! Did you move, change your phone number, email address or your name? Do you need to have a photo taken? Please check the online Directory - if you need the password, contact Gisela or Kirsten - and let us know any necessary changes. Thank you!

UU Women’s Circle - January 23

We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun!! We meet on 4th Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the UU Center, January through June. Join us!

Annual Congregational Retreat - January 25

“Social Justice: Where Do We Go from Here?” At our annual retreat on Saturday, January 25, we will examine where we have been and where we are as a congregation in terms of our social justice efforts and explore where we might want to go. The Social Justice Coordinating Team will present several possible directions for the congregation to consider. Breakfast and social time at 8 a.m., followed by the retreat from 9-noon. Be sure to put this important all-congregation retreat on your calendar!

Welcome to UU Orientation - January 26

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately two hours. For more info or to register for Welcome to UU, contact Laura McBride at 989.772.5512 or [email protected].

UU History Webinar - Begins January 27

Join Drew Frantz to watch a 5-week webinar on UU history presented by a UU minister in Cincinnati. We'll meet on Mondays from 7:45-9 p.m. to watch together, then have a brief discussion afterwards. Please contact Drew if you are interested.

Webinar: Whose History Is It Anyway?

Presenter: Reverend Connie Simon
How much do you know about the roots of our faith tradition? Explore the history of Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism in this five-week class. Using an anti-colonialist, multicultural lens, we’ll look beyond the traditional, dusty facts of history and examine to see how our faith was born and how it has developed and evolved over the years.
Topics include: Whose Story Is It Anyway, Why History Matters, The Roots of Liberal Religion, The Universalists, The Unitarians, Transcendentalism, Westward Expansion, Humanism, Consolidation, Principles and Sources, Drawing the Circle Wider, Indigenous, Latinx, Black and Non-Black People of Color, GLBTQ, and Disability.

UUFCM Book Club - February 12

We had to cancel our meeting on January 8, so we will do Olive Kitteridge on February 12. Now you have time to read it if you haven't yet! Olive Kitteridge is the highly acclaimed novel by Elizabeth Strout. The author intertwines the lives of the small town inhabitants of Crosby, Maine with her main character. As Olive mingles in their existence, it's left up to the reader to determine if she is a loathsome busybody or a redeeming soul. Join us on February 12th at 1:00 and make your case for Olive!

ICRH Volunteers Needed

The Isabella County Restoration House is in need of more volunteers throughout the shelter season. There are day shelter shifts (1-4 pm), intake shifts (4-6:30 pm), evenings at churches 7-10 pm, overnights at churches (10 pm – 6 am) and mornings at churches (6-8 am). To volunteer, submit an application on the website, and then sign-up to volunteer. Should you have questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey ([email protected]) or Joyce Henricks ([email protected]).
