eNews for Thursday, January 24

To be hopeful means to be uncertain about the future, to be tender toward possibilities, to be dedicated to change all the way down to the bottom of your heart.

~ Rebecca Solnit

Important All-Congregation Retreat

This Saturday, January 26, we will have our annual all-congregation retreat, starting with a hot breakfast served at 8:30 and the interactive retreat following from 9:00-noon. Because we are a self-governing congregation and because we will be making decisions about our direction forward after Dawn’s departure on January 31, it is very important that all voices be heard and that every vote counted. All members and friends will be contacted directly by a Board member to answer any questions you might have and to get your RSVP. We hope you'll do everything you can to answer in the affirmative. We'll see you there!

RE Service Project

RE kiddos, parents, and leaders had lots of fun making tie-blankets and cards for residents at Green Acres Assisted Living last Sunday! The "grandmas and grandpas" at Green Acres were very happy to be surprised with the unexpected gifts, and we hope the blankets and cards will help make their days a little brighter during this very chilly winter. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, January 27 for our final opportunity to worship together with our minister as she shares a reflection on this journey titled “Precious Stones on the Road” – we hope you will join us.

The world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground at our feet, and learn to be at home.     ~ Wendell Berry

To be joyful in the universe is a brave and reckless act. The courage for joy springs not from the certainty of human experience, but the surprise. Our astonishment at being loved, our bold willingness to love in return — these wonders promise the possibility of joyfulness, no matter how often and how harshly love seems to be lost. Therefore, despite the world’s sorrows, we give thanks for our loves, for our joys and for the continued courage to be happily surprised.     ~ Molly Furnia

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

February 7: “Rise and Shine” by Lissa Anne Gundlach, presented by Norma Bailey

Farewell Celebration

Sunday, January 27 will be our last worship service with our minister, and we are having a party to celebrate her time with us immediately after the service. Could you help us with refreshments? We are thinking of an assortment of finger foods (sweet or savory). Please bring them ready to serve. Thanks for your assistance.

Welcome to UU Orientation…

…is cancelled for January 27. The next orientation is on Sunday, February 24. This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday (following worship) at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes. For more info or to registe, contact: Laura McBride (989.772.5512; Lmcbride010@gmail.com) or Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com)

Dawn’s Final Week Schedule

Following her final worship service with us on Sunday, January 27, Dawn plans to spend her remaining days with us doing the necessary work of cleaning out her office and expressing any yet unconveyed messages of gratitude and goodbyes. If you would like to schedule time to meet with Dawn during her last week here, please contact her to make an appointment (to ensure private time with her) or you can drop by the church during any of the following hours and chat with her as she packs:
Tuesday 10am-2pm
Wednesday 1pm-4pm

Directory Update

We are in the process of updating the Directory - please help us by checking the online directory to see if your entry is still correct. The directory is password protected - it is the same as last year, but instead of 18, it is 19 at the end. Did you have a new postal or email address, a new phone number, a new spouse or child? If so, contact Gisela Moffit ASAP. Thank you for your help with our new directory project.

First Friday Potluck - February 1

Matt Cavalieri is hosting, and the theme is 'Foods You L❤️VE. We will also be celebrating the February birthdays of Annette Pratt, George Lentz, Alexis Calhoun, Kris Los, Laura McBride, and Glenn Lewandos. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Volunteer for ICRH

ICRH is always in need of volunteers – afternoons for the day shelter, 4:00-6:30 for intake, and evenings, overnights and mornings at the various churches. Go to ICRHouse.org to sign up to volunteer. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) or Joyce Henricks (henri1je@cmich.edu).

Save the Date – UUFCM Family Dance on Saturday, February 16!

On Saturday, February 16, from 6-10 p.m. at Jameson Hall (just east of Isabella Road off Pickard on Bud Street), all members, friends and guests of UUFCM are invited to a family dance. There is no cost other than there will be a basket at the door to accept donations to cover the rental of the building. Bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverage if you would like. The DJ would like to set up the play list ahead of time, so if you have any requests of music that you would like to dance to, please send or give your list to Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) or Jen Prout (poutyprouty66@yahoo.com). Polish up those dancing shoes!

MidAmerica Regional Assembly - Save the Date

The MidAmerica Regional Assembly will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, April 5-7, 2019. The keynote address will be presented by UUA President, Susan Frederick-Gray, and there will be multiple workshops. If you are interested in attending (with support from the Fellowship), contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or at baile1nj@cmich.edu).
