eNews for Thursday, June 6

Pizza at the Park

Despite the cooler weather, the sun was on our side, and all the children were determined to get wet at Island Park's splash pad last Sunday! On top of playing in the water, we got to explore outside, play yard games, and have fun on the playgrounds... a very good way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, June 9 to worship together with Mel Bailey, who will present “The Fruitful Darkness” We hope you will join us.

We may scoff at the idea that “bad” things happen for a “good” reason, or that there is a silver lining to every stormy cloud. But could it, in fact, be the experience of most human beings that something seemingly tragic becomes the catalyst for a positively transformative experience. Anecdotal evidence suggests that weathering those difficult storms can assist an individual in reaching the fullness of their potential. Resiliency is essential to a fulfilling existence and getting out of one’s comfort zone in order to take risks which yield the greatest rewards. Come explore “The Fruitful Darkness” and what might grow out of the soil of your darkest days if you embrace that possibility.

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

June 16: I'm Prejudiced. How Do I Change?, by Charlie Farnum
June 23: Finding Gratitude, by Laura McBride
June 30: Perspectives on the Bible: For Skeptics, Seekers and Religious Liberals, by Jim Dealing

UUFCM Garage Sale - Lots for Everyone to Do!

Our all-UUFCM biannual garage sale will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 13-15, and we are asking everyone to pitch in and help. Volunteers are needed to organize and price items and to staff the sale, and, of course, donate items. Please read the explanation sheet, check your calendar, and then contact Norma Bailey for your contribution. Let’s make this a truly all-UUFCM members and friends effort.

First Friday Potluck - June 7

Norma Bailey is hosting with a theme of “Summertime”. Bring your favorite picnic foods. We will also be celebrating the June birthdays of Betty Clason, Nancy White, Vicki Chessin, Liz Busch, Dave Macleod, Becky Beck, Roxanne Fleer, Carol Rard, Candi Tomlinson, and Rowan Gordon. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. – helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Transition Team Update

The Transition Team which has been charged with finding a minister to serve UUFCM for the 2019-2020 year starting September 1, 2019, would like to give you an update report.

Utilizing the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) ministerial search system, we had two candidates who expressed an interest in serving as our minister. After reading one candidate’s materials, interviewing her and checking her references, we made an offer, but unfortunately, she now has taken a position in an urban setting. While we were going through this process, the other candidate also took a position.

The Transition Team has since met and is exploring other resources.  We have placed an ad in the UU World. We are also in the process of contacting the eight theological schools which serve UU ministerial candidates to ask them to alert their upcoming graduates to our search for a minister.  As well, we are exploring advertising on CareerBuilder.com and/or LinkedIn.com.

We will keep you apprised as we continue our work.

A Request for Specialty Sunday Leaders!

The RE team is looking for willing congregants to lead an hour-long activity with our youth on select Sundays during service (July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18). These Specialty Sundays can be filled with stories, baking, finger-painting, playing instruments, singing, yoga, chalking outside, playing with bubbles, a combination of different activities, or anything else you think the children would enjoy! If you are interested in leading a Specialty Sunday or have an activity idea for the children, please email Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

UUFCM Book Club - June 19

The UUFCM book club meets at the fellowship hall the third Wednesday of each month at 12:30 pm. The next book we are reading is a historical mystery by C. J. Sansom titled Dissolution. As Henry the VIII seeks to solidify his position as Supreme Head of the church, he directs Thomas Cromwell to close the monasteries across England. One of Cromwell's commissioners is murdered and Cromwell wants to know by whom and why. Bring a lunch and join us June 19th at 12:30 for a lively discussion.

Spring Clean-Up - Saturday, June 22, 9-12

It’s time (almost late) for our spring clean-up this year. Your building team (Deb Allore, Norma Bailey, James Hatcher and Kris Los) has planned a half-day inside-the-building cleaning for Saturday, June 22, from 9 am – noon. We’ll have all the cleaning supplies ready for you. All you need to do is sign up with Deb Allore when she comes around during coffee hour on Sunday, June 9 and 16, to get everyone involved. Remember – many hands make the work light!

CUUPs Celebrates Litha - June 23

Solstice, or Litha means a stopping or standing still of the sun. It is the longest day of the year and the time when the sun is at its maximum elevation. This is also a time to celebrate growth and life for those who see balance in the world and are deeply aware of the ongoing shifting of the seasons. It is also time to acknowledge that the sun will now begin to decline once more towards winter. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm.

Cash Donation Envelopes

In an effort to reduce waste and cost (including recyclable paper) we came up with a bright idea! Instead of using the Cash Donation envelopes only once, we will add more labels on the envelope so it can be reused. For this to work, we ask you not to seal the envelope, but put the flap inside. It’ll make our treasurer happy because it is easier to open and new envelopes don’t need to be reordered so often. And we are all glad to go easy on the environment.

Lay Pastoral Care

During our transition, we will offer Lay Pastoral Care to anyone who is going through a difficult time. Gisela Moffit heads the Arms Around team, which provides transportation to doctor appointments, cards/emails/phone calls, preparing and delivering food for those recuperating. Carolyn Hancock will provide lay pastoral care for those who are hurting and need to talk to a caring person one-on-one. Contact Carolyn at 517-881-6006 for an appointment.
