eNews for Thursday, March 18

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom this Sunday, March 21 to worship together with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Commitment in a Pandemic.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“The middle of March represents a milestone that none of us could have foreseen: one year of lockdown due to COVID-19. Even as decreasing cases and increasing vaccines give us hope for re-opening, we reflect on the year of the pandemic and the commitment that got us this far. This Sunday we will also welcome new members of the Fellowship with a ceremony in their honor.”

President’s Report

Spring Forward

At our January retreat, we saw an upsurge in interest in learning about diverse spiritualities. In response, the eNews posted a call for folks interested in working on new Adult Religious Education programs. Joyce Henricks, Hal Downs, Stacey Pattison, and Jodi Fisher stepped up and formed a committee!

Let any one of them know if you are interested in joining that committee. And if you have an idea for an adult RE program, pitch it to them! Later this spring, following our current “Building Your Own Theology” class, Hal Downs will lead a course exploring the notion of covenant in Judaism and Islam.

Nowadays, of lots the fellowship’s real work gets done in committees. Let’s work together. Spring forward and join a team! If you’re interested in social justice, contact Norma Bailey to participate in the Social Justice Coordinating Team. Interested in RE (for kids)—then let Mel Bailey know. Want to get involved in communication and public relations? Contact Sally Armstrong, chair of the Communications Committee. And there are other committees that would welcome your participation.

Some of us will be getting (again) stimulus checks that we do not, in fact, really and truly need. And so many others are struggling. It’s an ethical quandary. One possibility is to donate these funds to the Minister’s Discretionary Fund. Drew uses this money to help anyone who needs emergency support—members, friends, and others who ask. Click the “donate” button on our website and you will see this listed as an option.

Another possibility is to donate your stimulus cash to UUFCM for the purpose of growing our endowment. Email Treasurer Terrie Robbie (tlrobbie1@gmail.com) for ways to do this.

Or donate to one of the many local charitable agencies that could really use the help. The Soup Kitchen, for example, is staying very busy during the pandemic, working to ward off hunger in Isabella County. There is also the Food Pantry, the homeless shelter (ICRH), domestic violence and sexual assault support services (R.I.S.E.), and others including the Care Store (health and cleaning supplies) and Clothing, INC.

Microaggressions Workshop - This Sunday

The Social Justice Coordinating Team invites everyone to a one-hour workshop on microaggressions this Sunday, March 21 from noon-1pm. The workshop will examine the tool “Recognizing Microaggressions and the Messages They Send” as well as the “Study of Micro-Aggressions and Other Hostile Encounters Between Tribal Members and Non-Natives in Isabella County.” The workshop will also share ideas about how to counter these micro-aggressions in ourselves and in others. Join us via Zoom!

Special Offering Collection - This Sunday

Our March 21 collection will be for the Soup Kitchen which, in response to the COVID pandemic, is currently serving drive-through to-go meals three days a week. The need is great; they served over 11,000 meals, of which 1,300 were for children, in the last three months. You can donate online to the  Social Justice Fund on our website or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with “Soup Kitchen” indicated in the memo line.

Fellowship Life Meeting - This Sunday

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

Women’s Circle - March 25

We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun! We meet on 4th Thursdays at 7pm. Join us via Zoom!

Together We Grow

“We are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business;
we are each other’s magnitude and bond.”― Gwendolyn Brooks

What do you receive from UUFCM? How do you choose to give back to our fellowship? These are questions the Stewardship Committee invites you to consider as we plan for the year ahead. Over the next few weeks, members of our congregation will be sharing personal reflections on their own relationships with our community. Karen Turnbull will be offering her thoughts at our next service. She’ll be followed by Jessica Jernigan, Jim Dealing, and Laura McBride.

Welcome to UU Orientation - Sunday, March 28

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:30 pm.
