eNews for Thursday, May 16

Worship Matters

This coming Sunday, May 19, is a very special day in the life of our fellowship! Known as the “Flower Service,” our gathering for worship will feature the annual spring-time ritual of the Flower Communion plus a message led by Norma Bailey titled “Meditation for Flower Communion,” by David E. Brumbaugh. The service will also include a New Member Ceremony welcoming four new members to our Fellowship. Our worship service will be followed immediately by the UUFCM Annual Meeting – please plan to join us!

Come celebrate the affirming, uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual of Flower Communion. Developed by Czech Unitarian minister Norbert Capek who died a martyr at Dachau, the ritual celebrates the unity within our diversity and the intrinsic beauty of each and every soul. Please remember to bring a flower with you to service – preferably a flower you really love – to place in the communal vase in front of the sanctuary. And if you forget a flower don’t worry - we will have extra ones.

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

May 26: Let's Talk About Whiteness, by Kevin Daum
June 2: The Evolution of Love, by Aaron Jones

Plan to Attend the Annual Meeting - Sunday, May 19

Please join us for the annual meeting of the UUFCM on Sunday, May 19, at 11:45 a.m. or immediately after the worship service. This is an opportunity for us to all engage in the democratic governance of our Fellowship, an important part of our UU heritage. The agenda for the meeting will include the election of the new trustees for the Board, the vote on the proposed budget, the vote on the proposed modifications to the bylaws, and recognition of volunteers.

It's an Almost-Summer Overnight!

Parents and guardians: We are holding an Almost-Summer Overnight this month! At 6pm on Saturday, May 18th, children in grades 3 through 6 are invited to join us at the church for dinner, outdoor games, crafts, a movie, and a sleepover in the sanctuary! Children younger than grade 3 are welcome to join us from 6-9 p.m. for the dinner and activities leading up to the movie. In the morning, there will be a breakfast followed by our multigenerational flower service. If you know any children who are looking for some fun before school ends, please RSVP with Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

A Request for Specialty Sunday Leaders!

The RE team is looking for willing congregants to lead an hour-long activity with our youth on select Sundays during service (July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18). These Specialty Sundays can be filled with stories, baking, finger-painting, playing instruments, singing, yoga, chalking outside, playing with bubbles, a combination of different activities, or anything else you think the children would enjoy! If you are interested in leading a Specialty Sunday or have an activity idea for the children, please email Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

Special Offering Collection - Sunday, May 19

The May special collection on Sunday, May 19 is for the Isabella County Child Advocacy Center. ICCAC is a non-profit agency that focuses on the safety of children by providing services to strengthen families through forensic interviews, advocacy, and prevention education. ICCAC staff provides community outreach and prevention education for families and children in an effort to eliminate child abuse and neglect. If you prefer to write a check, please address it to: ICCAC.

UUFCM Book Club - May 22

The book club voted on our next read. It is the award winning book “The Sparrow” by Mary Doria Russell. Is it science fiction or a philosophical genre? Nancy Pearl summarizes as “the nature of good and evil. What happens when a man tries to do the right thing, for the right reasons and ends up causing incalculable harm?” Come join us May 22 at 12:30 and bring your lunch. Normally we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month but for this month only we will meet on the 4th Wednesday.

Welcome to UU Orientation - May 26

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday (following worship) at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes.

This is the first in a series of three steps to membership at the UUFCM. For more information or to register for Welcome to UU, contact:
Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 Lmcbride010@gmail.com
or Gisela Moffit: 989.772.1602 gbmoffit@gmail.com

Young Adult Potluck - May 26

We gather to share a meal and engage in conversation and some game-playing or video watching (or whatever strikes our fancy) on the Last Sunday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the UUFCM Social Hall. A main dish will be provided, all others may bring a snack/side dish/dessert to pass. But if you're short on time or energy to bring something, don't worry - please come anyway!

Scammer Alert

The UUA indicates that several UU congregations have reported that their members have received scam emails requesting gift card donations for a charitable cause. UUA recommends that all UU congregations be made aware of this and reminded of the official channels that each congregation uses to accept donations. UUFCM’s official channel is through plate collections and through the mail, and we never ask for donations via e-mail. A good rule of thumb with emails you’re not expecting is to: (1) reach out to the sender through another channel (call, text, visit website) and (2) not click on a link (or send money, gift cards, etc.) without clarifying from the trusted source.

Save for This Year’s Garage Sale - June 13, 14, and 15

As you are doing any early spring housecleaning and come across items you could donate to our biannual garage sale to be held this spring, please hold on to them for the time being. More information coming soon!

Save for Scrap Metal Drive - May 31 or June 1

We will be having a scrap metal drive on Friday, May 31 and/or Saturday, June 1, depending on the weather. We use the proceeds of this drive to support leadership development of our members and friends. If you have any metal to donate, please contact Laura McBride (989-772-5512; lmcbride010@gmail.com) to arrange drop-off or pick-up.

Lay Pastoral Care

During our transition, we will offer Lay Pastoral Care to anyone who is going through a difficult time. Gisela Moffit heads the Arms Around team, which provides transportation to doctor appointments, cards/emails/phone calls, preparing and delivering food for those recuperating. Carolyn Hancock will provide lay pastoral care for those who are hurting and need to talk to a caring person one-on-one. Contact Carolyn at 517-881-6006 for an appointment.
