eNews for Thursday, May 2

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, May 5 to worship together with Jim Dealing, who will present “Religious Naturalism: A UU Path and a Personal Path” We hope you will join us.

One of a number of possible responses to  our commitment to “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

May 12: When Bad Things Happen to Other People, by Guy Newland
May 19: Meditation for Flower Communion, by Norma Bailey

First Friday Potluck - May 3

Carolyn Hancock and Deb Allore will be hosting with a theme of Spring – A New Beginning. Let's celebrate spring with your favorite fresh foods or your favorite dish of any kind! We will also be celebrating the May birthdays of Scott Daigle, Cynthia Damer, Susan Powers, Kate Swier, Larry Hall, Stacy Guthrie, and Mary Alsager. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Path to Membership Workshop - May 4

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour session beginning at 1 p.m. (may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let us know one week prior to the class if you need childcare. For more info or to register for the workshop contact:
Laura McBride (989.772.5512; Lmcbride010@gmail.com), or
Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com)

Infant Pantry Collection - May 5

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Baby Shower - May 5

On Sunday, May 5 immediately following the service we will have a baby shower for Charles Kenneth Emerick, son of Matthew and Elaine Emerick. Charlie was born March 1, a week before our originally scheduled baby shower! Now we are looking forward to getting acquainted with him and celebrating his life and gifts.

If you would like to help preparing the party, let Kris Los know; if you want to donate some money for a gift from the congregation, make a check out to Gisela Moffit (baby shower on subject line). They are registered at Amazon and at Target in case you want to pick out a gift from your family.

It's an Almost-Summer Overnight!

Parents and guardians: We are holding an Almost-Summer Overnight this month! At 6pm on Saturday, May 18th, children in grades 3 through 6 are invited to join us at the church for dinner, outdoor games, crafts, a movie, and a sleepover in the sanctuary! Children younger than grade 3 are welcome to join us from 6–9pm for the dinner and activities leading up to the movie. In the morning, there will be a breakfast followed by our multigenerational flower service. If you know any children who are looking for some fun before school ends, please RSVP with Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

Annual Meeting of the UUFCM - Sunday, May 19

Please join us for the annual meeting of the UUFCM on Sunday, May 19, at 11:45 a.m. or immediately after the worship service. The agenda for the meeting will include the election of the new trustees for the Board, the vote on the proposed budget, the vote on the proposed modifications to the bylaws, and recognition of volunteers.

UUFCM Book Club - May 22

The book club voted on our next read. It is the award winning book “The Sparrow” by Mary Doria Russell. Is it science fiction or a philosophical genre? Nancy Pearl summarizes as “the nature of good and evil. What happens when a man tries to do the right thing, for the right reasons and ends up causing incalculable harm?” Come join us May 22 at 12:30 and bring your lunch. Normally we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month but for this month only we will meet on the 4th Wednesday.

A Request for Specialty Sunday Leaders!

The RE team is looking for willing congregants to lead an hour-long activity with our youth on select Sundays during service (July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18). These Specialty Sundays can be filled with stories, baking, finger-painting, playing instruments, singing, yoga, chalking outside, playing with bubbles, a combination of different activities, or anything else you think the children would enjoy! If you are interested in leading a Specialty Sunday or have an activity idea for the children, please email Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

Save for This Year’s Garage Sale - June 13, 14, and 15

As you are doing any early spring housecleaning and come across items you could donate to our biannual garage sale to be held this spring, please hold on to them for the time being. More information coming soon!

Save for Scrap Metal Drive - May 31 or June 1

We will be having a scrap metal drive on Friday, May 31 and/or Saturday, June 1, depending on the weather. We use the proceeds of this drive to support leadership development of our members and friends. If you have any metal to donate, please contact Laura McBride (989-772-5512; lmcbride010@gmail.com) to arrange drop-off or pick-up.

New Play Presented at UUFCM - May 11

Thunder Bay Theatre is teaming up with the Alpena High School Masquers Club and Central Michigan University Department of Theatre and Dance to present the Social Injustice Project, a reading series staging plays that deal with issues of social injustice. This spring, a team of actors from each of the partnering organizations will present a staged reading of the Pulitzer Prize winning Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, a theatrical response to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. The reading will be presented in Mt. Pleasant on May 11 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Michigan starting at 7:00 pm. Each performance will be followed by a talkback to discuss the themes and issues presented in the play.

Clybourne Park tells the other side of the story of A Raisin in the Sun, questioning race relations in Chicago in the 1950s and today, discussing gentrification and housing inequalities.
