eNews for Thursday, November 1

Perhaps salvation is something very different than anyone ever expected. Perhaps this will be the only question we will have to answer:
“What can you tell me about [November?]”

~ Burton D Carley (adapted)
Our Halloween celebration went off without a hitch last Friday! Kiddos got to decorate cupcakes, make Halloween masks, go on a candy scavenger hunt, and mummify their friends in toilet paper! Thank you to everyone who came and made the night a blast.

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 4.
Don’t forget to give yourself another hour of sleep -
on Saturday night turn your clocks back one hour at bedtime!

Worship Matters

Our worship service this Sunday, November 4 is designed to support and inspire our spirits as we approach Election Day 2018 with a message from Norma Bailey titled “A Change Is Gonna Come.” We hope you will join us.

“O, let America be America again
The land that never has been yet
And yet must be…”     ~ Langston Hughes

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

November Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Memory?
November 11: “Hearts Will Work Again” Lay Leader: Laura McBride
November 18: Annual Harvest Feast Worship Service
November 25: “Remembering Wisdom”

Minister on Vacation

Dawn will be out of state for a family vacation and wedding from Saturday, November 3 through Monday, November 12, and will be returning to work on November 13. Pastoral care concerns in her absence should be directed to Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com).

First Friday Potluck - November 2

Jen Prout will be hosting tomorrow, with the theme of Fall Soups.
The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the November birthdays of Jim Dealing, Bob Busch, Jen Prout, Ricky Courlander, Irv (Mary Irvine), Al Jackson, and Tom Moffit.

What about the December potluck? Perhaps you’d like to host and choose a theme! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

Isabella County Restoration House

The ICRH (Homeless Shelter) opens this month. The UUFCM is again partnering with St. John’s Episcopal Church, and we are scheduled to provide help for the weeks starting this Sunday, November 4 and ending Saturday, November 17. We will need volunteers for providing dinners, overnight stays, and other services. There will be a sign-up sheet on Sunday and Joyce Henricks will gently nag you about volunteering.

Infant Pantry Collection - Sunday, November 4

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Ready for Your Close-Up?

On Sunday after the service, we will start taking your pictures for the directory. You can opt out or submit electronically a photo of your own choice, but our photographers have cameras with the best pixels for printing :-) If you and your spouse or partner are listed at the same address in the dictionary, please take a photo of you two together (due to space considerations). Photos will be taken all through November after the services. We hope to have this project done by the end of the year. Thank you in advance for helping us accomplish this. For questions or comments, contact Gisela.

RE Overnight - November 17

Our RE Overnight is this month at UUFCM from Saturday, November 17, 5:30 p.m. - Sunday, November 18, 12:00 p.m.! This event is for kiddos 3rd - 6th grade and will include homemade dinner/dessert, games, and a movie before bed! We will also be making stone soup for the congregation to enjoy at the Harvest Feast on Sunday. If your child(ren) will be able to make it, please contact Kendra Peffers at re.uufcm@gmail.com with your child(ren)'s name and whether you would like to contribute an ingredient to the stone soup.

Annual Harvest Feast - Sign Up!

There are sign up sheets in the fellowship hall for people to help with food, set up and clean up for the Harvest Feast which will be on November 18 in the Library Annex. More information to follow!

Christmas Outreach

Once again the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is collecting new children's books for Christmas Outreach. There will be a box for donations located in the fellowship hall. Please bring new books; we especially need books for young adults, but any new children's books–board books, picture books, graphic novels and young adult books–are welcome. Distribution will be at Finch Fieldhouse on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8. If everyone could just contribute just one or two books, that would be great!

I will also be asking at a later date for volunteers for 2-hour shifts, to help parents choose the books and hand them out, so if you think you will be able to do that, save the date(s). Please contact Beth Macleod with any questions. Thanks in advance!

Nosh and Nibbles Needed!

Are you looking for a small but valuable way to make a contribution to UUFCM? The new sign up sheet for refreshments is in the Social Hall on bright fall orange paper and needs folks who are willing to sign up to bring treats for Sunday mornings. We are nut free due to some with that allergy, and try to offer gluten free options, too. Consider baked goods, popcorn, veggies/fruit, hummus/crackers, and/or pretzels. You could freeze them and bring them ahead of time with a note on them to be put out on a particular day, if you cannot make the Sunday you signed up for. The goodies make the visits around the tables after service even sweeter! Thank you!

GOTV Postcard Party Thanks

Thanks to all of you who stayed after the worship service last Sunday and wrote 250 postcards encouraging people to get out to vote on November 6. Thanks, too, to the Social Justice Coordinating Team for organizing the event.
