eNews for Thursday, October 17

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, October 20 to worship together with our minister, Drew Frantz, who will present “What Do UUs Believe In?” Please join us!

When Unitarian Universalists are asked what we believe in, often we respond in the negative: we don’t have to believe in God in this religion, we don’t use a holy text as the authority for truth. So what do we believe in? Many of us would point to the seven principles and six sources, which we will examine more closely in this service.

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

October 27: Who Are Our Current Witches?
November 3: Day of the Dead
November 10: Patriarchy Is Alive and Well in Unitarian Universalism

UU Women’s Group Meeting Announcement

We will be starting a UU Women’s Group meeting on third Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the UUFCM sanctuary, beginning on October 17, 2019. Our goal will be to celebrate and learn about womanhood, past, present, and future. We will create a safe place to discuss and process issues around being a woman, while we get to know one another better. Last, we will also find the time to have fun. At the first meeting we will plan more specific goals and objectives together. Jen Prout, Joyce Hendricks and Carolyn Hancock will facilitate this group together. Please text Carolyn at 517-881-6006 if you are interested in attending this group meeting.

Path to Membership Workshop - 1 p.m. on October 19

This workshop is designed for those who are ready to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour* session on designated Saturdays (*depending on the size of the group – may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let us know one week prior to the class if you need childcare. For more info or to register for Path to Membership, contact:
Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 Lmcbride010@gmail.com

Special Offering Collection - October 20

This Sunday, the special offering is for R.I.S.E. (formerly Women’s Aid Service), an agency serving domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Isabella, Gratiot, and Clare counties. If you prefer to write a check, please address it to R.I.S.E.

Fellowship Life Meeting - October 20

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

“Suppressed – the Fight to Vote” - October 26

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is presenting a new film by Robert Greenwald from Brave New Films, “Suppressed – the Fight to Vote” on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 pm at the UUFCM. The film chronicles the rampant voter suppression that affected the outcome of the 2018 midterm election in Georgia and the threat it poses to our elections all across the nation in 2020. We will also have available materials for people to register to vote and to apply for an absentee ballot. Bring friends and family members to view the film and engage in this important conversation.

RE Halloween Fun - October 27

On October 27th after the multigenerational service, children and their families are invited to join us in the social hall for some Halloween treats, pumpkin painting, and DIY Halloween decorations to put up at the church! If you know any children who are excited for Halloween, we hope to see them at this event!

Welcome to UU Orientation - October 27

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately two hours.

This is the first in a series of three steps to membership at the UUFCM. For complete information, please visit our website at http://www.uufcm.org/membership.html

For more info or to register for Welcome to UU, contact:
Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 Lmcbride010@gmail.com

Community Justice Party - November 2

You are all invited to our third bi-annual Community Justice Party on Saturday, November 2, from 7-9 pm. There will be a program in the sanctuary of music, skits, poetry, and activities highlighting several social justice issues, and then we will meet in the fellowship hall for light refreshments and a rousing cake walk (cake walk tickets 25 cents each, so bring lots of quarters)! The suggested donation for adults is $5 (although more will gratefully be accepted), and children are free (with child care provided for in the nursery if you will let Norma Bailey know that it is needed by Sunday, October 27). And if you have a song or reading or anything else that you would like to contribute to the program, contact any member of the Social Justice Coordinating Team – Norma Bailey, Joyce Henricks, Jen Prout, Sara Prussing, Candi Tomlinson, or Katie Zapoluch. This was a highlight event two years ago, so be sure to have it on your calendar!

UUFCM Book Club - November 13

We meet 2nd Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the UU Center, September through June. Bring a lunch and enjoy the discussion! Our November read is Geraldine Brooks’ Year of Wonders. “It’s 1666 and an isolated island quarantines itself in an attempt to stop the spread of the bubonic plague. This historical novel shows how good people turn on each other as death takes its toll. Ignorance and hatred soon becomes as deadly as the disease itself.”

Social Justice Interest Survey

While the UUFCM Social Justice Coordinating Team regularly announces events and needs through the e-News, the bulletin board in the fellowship hall, the order of service and on our Facebook page, we would also like to directly alert members and friends who might have an interest in a specific issue. To this end, we ask that you fill out this survey if you haven’t already and submit a hard copy to any of the members of the committee or email your completed survey to Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu. Hard copies are also available at the Fellowship.

Give to CMU Public Media, Help the UUFCM

We are once again collecting for CMU Public Media. In the fall, we pool our resources together in order to purchase air time on CMU Public Radio. Depending on the amount gathered, we get 1-2 ads per week for a good part of the year. Please make your check to “CMU Public Media” and give it to Mary Alsager. Together we do great things!
