eNews for Thursday, October 25

In times like these, I look to the past. I come from people not meant to survive, and here is our bloodline, stronger than ever.

~ Brittany Packnett

Be A Poll Observer - Training Tonight!

Poll observers are nonpartisan volunteers who simply watch the voting process and document what they see. If you would like to help the Mt. Pleasant League of Women Voters with this important work, please sign up for a training by emailing lwvmpa@icloud.com. The first training session is tonight at UUFCM at 7 p.m. Please download the flyer for complete information.

Worship Matters

Our worship service this Sunday, October 28 provides us an opportunity to bridge our October and November worship themes with a message from our minister titled “The Sanctuary of Remembrance” – we hope you will join us.

“To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware
that we did not make ourselves.”     ~ Alice Walker

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

October Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Sanctuary?
November Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Memory?
November 4: Lay Leader: Norma Bailey
November 11: Lay Leader: Laura McBride
November 18: Annual Harvest Feast Worship Service

If your child(ren) will be able to make it to this event, please email Kendra Peffers at re.uufcm@gmail.com

Last Call to Support CMU Public Radio and the UUFCM!

Please consider making a donation to CMU Public Media. UUFCM annually pools our donations to purchase air time on CMU Public Radio. We typically raise enough get two radio spots weekly for 8-9 months – about $900. We have collected $760 so far, so we are close! Please write your check to CMU Public Media and give it to Mary Alsager. She will be collecting through October.

Welcome to UU Orientation - October 28

Get Out the Vote Postcard Writing Party - October 28

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is hosting a GOTV Postcard Writing Party on Sunday, October 28, right after church to urge/nudge people who might not get out to vote to do so. We’ll have the stamped postcards, a list of people to write to – or you might have your own list – and a script for you to follow if you wish.

Annual Harvest Feast - Sign Up!

There will be sign up sheets in the fellowship hall this Sunday for people to help with food, set up and clean up for the Harvest Feast which will be on November 18th in the Library Annex. More information to follow!

CUUPs Samhain Ritual - October 28

Samhain (pronounced SAH-win) is a holiday known by another name - Halloween. The ancients believed this was the time of year when the veil between the living and passed was the thinnest. It is a time to remember those who have passed before us and listen to their stories which still live on inside us. It is also the Pagan “new year” with death and birth being two sides of the same coin. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7pm.

First Friday Potluck - November 2

Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

We will also be celebrating the November birthdays of Jim Dealing, Bob Busch, Jen Prout, Ricky Courlander, Irv (Mary Irvine), Al Jackson, and Tom Moffit. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Infant Pantry Collection - Sunday, November 4

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Nosh and Nibbles Needed!

Are you looking for a small but valuable way to make a contribution to UUFCM? The new sign up sheet for refreshments is in the Social Hall on bright fall orange paper and needs folks who are willing to sign up to bring treats for Sunday mornings. We are nut free due to some with that allergy, and try to offer gluten free options, too. Consider baked goods, popcorn, veggies/fruit, hummus/crackers, and/or pretzels. You could freeze them and bring them ahead of time with a note on them to be put out on a particular day, if you cannot make the Sunday you signed up for. The goodies make the visits around the tables after service even sweeter! Thank you!

Wanted: Directory Photos!

When we distributed our Small Interest Groups with photographs of the leaders recently, we received very positive responses. Everybody agreed that knowing what the persons looked like made it so much easier to contact them. Now we are ready to expand this concept and include photos of everybody in the directory. On the next 4 Sundays (Oct. 28-Nov. 18-) Aaron Jones, Terrie Robbie, and James Hatcher have volunteered to do this fun job of taking your smiling pics. You can opt out or submit a photo of your choice, but know that our photographers have cameras with the best pixels for printing:-) Looking forward to getting this project done before the end of the year. Thanks for helping us accomplish this. For questions or comments, contact Gisela.

Isabella County Restoration House

The ICRH (Homeless Shelter) opens at the end of this month. The UUFCM is again partnering with St. John’s Episcopal Church, and we are scheduled to provide help for the weeks starting Sunday, November 4 and ending Saturday, November 17. We will need volunteers for providing dinners, overnight stays, and other services. There will be a sign-up sheet on Sunday and Joyce Henricks will gently nag you about volunteering.
