eNews for Thursday, October 6

Thank you!

Daniel and Jennifer Davis spent part of a beautiful fall Saturday keeping up our UUFCM grounds – pulling weeds and edging our sidewalks.  Thanks to both of you! However, we need more people to pitch in, so we are going to have a mini-work day on Saturday, October 15, at 10am to get odds and ends done – trim the evergreen bushes, clip off the dead lilac flowers, bring in the hoses, empty the rain barrel, mulch the new trees, pick up sticks, and more weeding, etc. Please come and help out as many hands make the work much lighter! Bring your yard tools if possible. Or if you want to tackle one of these tasks on a different day, contact Norma Bailey ([email protected]) and she will get you situated!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, October 9 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Indigenous Peoples Day.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on October 10. We honor the wisdom of indigenous peoples around the world. We name the courage that indigenous people have shown in generations past, and we name the courage that it takes today to confront the harm done, and to advocate for a more just and harmonious world for all peoples.”

COVID Update

  • We continue with hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). Our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt), which applies to children also. Masks are optional for worship services and small group meetings.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Anyone vaccinated may attend services.

  • Small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our teams and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.

  • Indoor eating events are allowed – coffee hour, Friday night potlucks, and our annual Harvest Feast – as long as people are vaccinated.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Anti-Racism Small Group Discussion Series

Beginning Today at 7pm
Continuing on Thursdays Through November 3

This program is intended for people with white privilege to confront and dismantle the (often unconscious) racism within themselves, opening the way to reducing harm and increasing harmony everywhere in their lives. We will use the workbook “Me and White Supremacy” by Layla Saad which guides us through 28 days of daily reflection and journaling. In our weekly small group meetings, we will strive to create a safe space to share and reflect with each other. The workbook will be provided, and participants are invited to make a donation to offset the cost. Please contact Drew to sign up or to ask any questions. We will meet both in person and on Zoom.

First Friday Potluck - October 7

Please join us in the UUFCM Fellowship Hall at 6:30pm (doors open at 6:15) for food, conversation, and games! Coffee, hot tea, and water will be provided. If you are able, please bring a dish to pass.

Coffee House Open Mic - October 7

Bring your favorite beverage and join us for a virtual coffee house on the first Friday of every other month at 7:30pm. We will follow an open mic format: anyone can share some music or poetry. Aim for 5 minutes for your song or poem. Signing up ahead of time is encouraged: contact Drew at minister.uufcm.org or 440-935-0129. Get ready for a groovy time!

Letter Writing - October 8

To date, we have written 390 letters to underrepresented voters in Michigan while enjoying good conversation and snacks! One letter-writer said, “It felt good to know that I was doing something to help with the election.”
There are two more letter-writing parties scheduled – this Saturday, October 8 at 10am and Tuesday, October 11 at 5:30pm. Come join us in the fellowship hall if you want to have that same feeling! If you have any questions, feel free to contact anyone from the Social Justice Coordinating Team.

Potatoes!

The children had a wonderful time digging up potatoes! Besides the 13 potatoes which were donated to the Soup Kitchen, they were delighted to encounter earth worms and grubs!

Movie Night - October 22 at 7pm

Join us for News of the World starring Tom Hanks. Confederate Captain Kidd has no reason to return home. For five years he travels from town to town reading newspapers. His uneventful life becomes complicated when he assumes custody of a 10-year-old orphan and is charged with returning her to distant relatives. It won't be an easy task.

Pumpkin Party - October 23

On Sunday, October 23 from 11:45-12:45 at UUFCM, the Religious Education team will host a Pumpkin Party! Children of all ages and their families are invited to join us in the fellowship hall directly following service to paint and/or carve a pumpkin of their choice! Youth are more than welcome to bring a friend to this event as well. If interested, please fill out this form so we can have enough pumpkins for everyone!

Women’s Empowerment Night:
Self-Esteem and Self-Care Workshop

Saturday, October 29 at 7pm

Want to have a fun night talking about ourselves with LOVE? Many women do not have high self-esteem nor practice self-care. Come share in discussion, activities, and even some follow-up homework as we explore our personal and collective ideas for improving self-love between 7-9 pm. Snacks and water will be provided. Bring your own favorite beverage too! The workshop will take place in the fellowship hall and is presented by the Adult RE Committee. For more information, contact Jodi Fisher at [email protected].

Women’s Wave 2022

Join us for a national day of action to help us send the message: Women demand our rights. We won’t go back to the days when women were second class citizens! We are Pro-Choice, Pro-Vote, Pro-Equality and Pro-Family Values! Locally there are two rallys that are part of this national event:

Michigan State Capitol - 11am
October 8 marks 30 days until Election Day. Rally in front of the Capitol building to show we’re more fired up than ever to elect more women and pro-choice candidates around the country — we’re ready for the Women’s Wave!

Midland County Courthouse - 2pm
Bring your signs and join us in front of the Midland County Courthouse for a rally, and then we'll march a few blocks to Grove Park, where there will be information on how to get involved with getting out the vote for Michigan's Proposal 3, Reproductive Freedom for All. We're also planning some fun activities for all ages at the park - everyone is welcome!
