eNews for Thursday, September 16

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, September 19 to worship together with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Blessing of Children and Teachers.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“This day is the official beginning of the Fellowship’s religious education program, and we honor the youngsters, their parents, and teachers. More broadly today we celebrate the precious gift, limitless promise, and awesome responsibility that every child represents; and we celebrate all those who love, support, teach, and mentor them.”

Minister’s Column

Read the Minister’s column at uufcm.org/andrew-frantz.

COVID Update

  • We are continuing hybrid services (in person/Zoom)
    throughout the month of September.
If you signed up for in-person services in September, you should have received an email indicating which service you’ve been assigned to attend and how to switch if you need to. Contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) if you’re unsure.

  • Right now, small groups up to ten people can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
While the Board of Trustees has approved policies for Fellowship gatherings as we seek to reconnect in person safely, please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Special Offering Collection - This Sunday, September 19

The September special collection is for the CMU Student Food Pantry, which works to alleviate the challenges and hardships of food insecurity that many CMU students encounter during their academic career. You can make your online donation to the Social Justice Fund or, if you prefer to write a check, please write it to UUFCM with CMU Student Food Pantry on the memo line.

Fellowship Life Meeting - This Sunday Following Worship

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend. Terrie Robbie will provide the year-end (2020-2021) budget summary report, and there will be a COVID update.

CUUPs Celebrates Mabon This Sunday

The Covenant of UU Pagans will celebrate Mabon, the 2nd of the harvest festivals, this Sunday, September 19. This is the second time of the year to specifically commune with nature. The autumn equinox focuses on the cooler aspects than summer solstice does. The festival is represented by the harvest of corn, along with the other products in your garden that are ready to be harvested. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6:30pm, in-person only, and there will be no potluck.

Want to Be of Help?

The Arms Around committee wants to increase the number of volunteers. This care committee responds to Joys and Concerns, drives people to doctor appointments, makes meals, and runs errands for patients recovering at home. We are looking for people who would like to be drivers or provide help with errands or meals. Our goal is to have enough people on the volunteer list that each one will only be called occasionally. Please contact Gisela (gbmoffit@gmail.com) for more information and to sign up. Thank you in advance.

Where Is Our UUFCM Banner?

We are unable to find our UUFCM banner that we previously used when we march in parades. If you have it somewhere or know where it is located, please contact Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu.

Women’s Circle - September 23

We provide a safe and supportive place to explore womanhood and women’s history, discuss issues, get to know one another better, and have fun! We meet on 4th Thursdays at 7pm.

Adult RE Series Begins October 6

Is the idea of retirement a positive or a negative for you? Americans are particularly ambivalent about retirement. Our ideas about age and about work encourage many of us to avoid thinking about retirement and to put it off as long as we can, and retirement doesn't work for some people. Indeed, after retirement many choose to go back to work and not primarily for economic reasons. Yet, an international survey identified the decade of the sixties as the most satisfying time of life, a time of enhanced freedom and opportunity.

On the four Wednesdays in October, Jim Dealing will facilitate discussion of this important chapter in our lives. The plan is to include retirees and those not yet retired, to discuss in small groups their concerns and their experience. We will discuss the pros and cons of retirement, exploring a variety of relevant issues, including health, social connections, meaning and purpose, and spiritual dimensions. The objective is how best to make the most of this time.

The class will run from 7-8 or 8:30pm. It may be held on Zoom or in person, depending on the COVID threat at that time. Please let Jim Dealing know if you are or may be interested in participating.

What You Can Do to Support Our Voting Rights

Now that the legislators are back in session, here are some things that you can do so that our constitutional right to vote is not in any way limited.
  • Educate yourself. Using this summary of the proposed 39 bills, educate yourself about their content and then share that information with our family members and friends.
  • You can financially support or volunteer for any of the coalition of organizations working to counter these bills – the NAACP, the ACLU, Promote the Vote, Voters Not Politicians, and our own UUA and MUUSJN.
  • Contact our 33rd Michigan Senate District Senator Rick Outman (SenROutman@senate.michigan.gov) sharing your concerns.
One of the easiest things you can do is sign up for Voters Not Politicians’ “Dial for Democracy” action. They alert you when legislative action is going to occur in Lansing and give you talking points and the link to send your message. Super easy – it takes ten minutes to complete – and it makes a difference!

George’s Veggies

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.
