Garden News

Quite a haul this week, and potatoes are coming!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, September 5 to worship together with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Water Ingathering.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

Special schedule:

  • Our worship service in the sanctuary will go from 10:30-11:15.
  • The Water Ingathering ritual will be held outdoors on the porch steps
under the Black Lives Matter banner at 11:30.
  • Both portions are also on Zoom.

“The annual Water Ceremony has special meaning for Unitarian Universalists, as we symbolically mingle water into a common bowl. Some people bring actual water from a place important to them, or water that has significance for them; others pour water from a container provided.”

COVID Update

  • We are continuing hybrid services (in person/Zoom)
    throughout the month of September.
If you signed up for in-person services in September, you should have received an email indicating which service you’ve been assigned to attend and how to switch if you need to. Contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) if you’re unsure.

  • Right now, small groups up to ten people can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
While the Board of trustees has approved policies for Fellowship gatherings as we seek to reconnect in person safely, please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so please stay tuned for updates.

We Get By with a Little Help from Our Friends…

We are looking for volunteers who will take on one or more of the following tasks as needed. If you are willing to do so, please contact Gisela Moffit (gbmoffit@gmail.com).

Though the Pantry is currently closed, you can donate online to the Monthly Donations for Infant Pantry on our website or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with Infant Pantry in the memo. Questions? Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu).

Adult RE Talk - Wednesday, September 8 at 7pm

What does the Buddhist tradition have to offer UU?

After explaining what Buddhism is, and how he himself can be both a Buddhist and a UU, Guy will explore how traditional Buddhist ideas (karma, rebirth, emptiness, enlightenment) can be understood in the liberal/liberating context of UU. Can non-Buddhist UUs enrich our tradition by adapting Buddhist practices such as mindfulness meditation and lovingkindness meditation? Or is this sheer cultural appropriation?
In September we celebrate the birthdays of Jolie Damer, David Wagstaff, Alicia Genia, Beau Bailey, Carol Messick, Gisela Moffit, and Mairi Devenney. For the year to come, we wish them much joy, good health for body and mind, and new (ad)ventures. May it be so.

Summer Garden

More dates have been added in September, please use this link to view and when you could volunteer to spend part of your week watering, weeding, and showing our RE Garden some love. Please sign up! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Summer Garden coordinator, Roxanne Fleer.

George’s Veggies

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.

Summer Schedule

Youth Religious Education

During the summer months there will not be regular Youth RE classes. Instead, monthly activity folders are offered to any family who wants one – sign up here. Please contact Jakobe Neal with any questions. Also, children and families are invited to help plant and maintain the Summer Garden – sign up here. Please contact Roxanne Fleer with any questions.
