eNews for Thursday, September 20

Creativity - like human life itself - begins in darkness.

~ Julia Cameron
We had a fun-filled morning at Sunday’s RE Kickoff as we celebrated the beginning of this year’s RE Program with tasty snacks, get-to-know you games, arts and crafts, and lots of balloons! Children can be registered at any time during the year, so no worries if your child(ren) were not able to make it to Sunday’s event. Off to a great start for the 2018-2019 RE Program!

Worship Matters

Please plan to join us as we gather for worship this coming Sunday, September 23 to continue our exploration of what it means to be a people of vision – our minister’s message for the morning is titled “Sweet Darkness.”

“So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.”

~ T. S. Eliot

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

September Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Vision?
September 30: The Vision of the Bricklayer
October Worship Theme: What Does It Mean to Be a People of Sanctuary?
October 7: Seeking Sanctuary
October 14: Sermon by Guy Newland

Welcome to UU - Sunday, September 23

Welcome to UU is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. Although this month it is on the 23rd, it is normally offered every month on the last Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes.

Covenant of UU Pagans Mabon Ritual - Sunday, September 23

The 2nd of the harvest festivals, Mabon is the second time of the year to specifically commune with nature. The autumn equinox focuses on the cooler aspects than summer solstice does. The festival is represented by the harvest of corn, along with the other products in your garden that are ready to be harvested.

We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm.

Walk with Us!

The UUFCM will be participating in the CROP Hunger Walk again this year. CROP Hunger Walk is not only a way to help end hunger around the world, but 25% of the money raised in the Mount Pleasant community goes toward efforts to end hunger here. You may choose to walk to raise money or you may choose to give to someone who is walking. There is also an online giving option. The actual walk will take place: Sunday, October 7, at Millpond Park with registration beginning at 1 p.m. Deb Allore will have envelopes and more information at Sunday services on September 23 and 30, and October 7.

Save the Dates: Reproductive Justice Workshops at UUFCM

October 14 and 21

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is facilitating two workshops titled “Reproductive Justice: A Threat to All of Us” on Sundays, October 14 and 21, after the worship service. Sign up will be available starting Sunday, September 30, so that we can plan for a light lunch.

Getting to Know the Shared Interest Groups

Would you like to get more involved with UU members and friends? We offer a large variety of groups and activities that might be of interest to you. We have put together a flyer listing all the groups with dates/times/locations of meetings, and leaders’ contact information including photos so that you can easily spot the leaders and talk to them on Sundays after the service. Hard copies will be available at the church this Sunday, but the information is on our website as well.

Happy Birthday!

Are you on our birthday calendar? Please click here to make sure you are! If you are not, contact Gisela (989-772-1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com) who will add your special day. Then we can sing to you at our monthly First Friday Potluck too!

Veggies from George

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, and cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.

A Way to Raise Your Voice

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has proposed changes to the K-12 social studies curriculum.  The new standards would eliminate any mention of LGBT rights, the NAACP, Roe v. Wade, climate change and “core democratic values.”  The final draft version of the Social Studies Standards: 2007 to 2018 Side-by-Side Comparison is available for review and online public comment until September 30, 2018. Even if you are not a social studies teacher, you know what you would like your children or grandchildren to be learning, so the Social Justice Coordinating Team encourages you to take time to read the proposed standards and comment!

Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights Interfaith Conference

Inclusive Justice and the Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN), along with other organizations, is offering an interfaith conference titled “Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights” on Friday, October 19, from 9 am-4 pm in Clawson, Michigan. Included will be a press conference on the conversion therapy controversy. Cost is $10.00, and you can register on-line at inclusivejustice.org or via snail mail, and sign up for the workshops in which you have interest. Norma Bailey is attending, and she can take up to four others with her; please contact her at baile1nj@cmich.edu for further information and/or to arrange transportation.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
