Without vision, the people perish.

~ Sean Parker Dennison, paraphrase of Proverbs 29:18

RE Soup Kitchen Harvest

A very successful harvest for the Soup Kitchen from our UU Youth Garden!

Worship Matters

In worship this Sunday, September 30 we will be concluding our month-long exploration of what it means to be a people of vision with a message from our minister titled “The Vision of the Bricklayer” – we hope you will join us!

“Once there were three bricklayers. Each one of them was asked what they were doing. The first man answered gruffly, “I’m laying bricks.” The second man replied, “I’m putting up a wall.” But the third man said enthusiastically and with pride, “I’m building a cathedral.”

~ Author unknown

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

First Friday Potluck - October 5

Join us for our October First Friday communal nosh! Janis Shinn will be our host, and the theme is Fall Foods. We will also be celebrating the October birthdays of Grace Rollins, Joyce Henrick, Michelle Gawne, and Chris Bailey. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

What about the November 2nd Potluck? Who is hosting? and what’s the theme? We don’t know, but perhaps you’d like to host and choose! If so, please contact Jen Prout (989-400-3130) or George Lentz (248-346-4039). If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

Infant Pantry Collection - October 7

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Walk with Us on October 7

The UUFCM will be participating in the CROP Hunger Walk again this year. CROP Hunger Walk is not only a way to help end hunger around the world, but 25% of the money raised in the Mount Pleasant community goes toward efforts to end hunger here. You may choose to walk to raise money or you may choose to give to someone who is walking. There is also an online giving option. The actual walk will take place: Sunday, October 7, at Millpond Park with registration beginning at 1 p.m. Deb Allore will have envelopes and more information at Sunday services on September 23 and 30, and October 7.

Support CMU Public Radio and the UUFCM!

Please consider making a donation to CMU Public Media. UUFCM annually pools our donations to purchase air time on CMU Public Radio. We typically raise enough get 2 radio spots weekly for 8-9 months. Please write your check to CMU Public Media and give it to Mary Alsager. She will be collecting through October.

Reproductive Justice Workshops at UUFCM

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is facilitating two workshops titled “Reproductive Justice: A Threat to All of Us” on Sundays, October 14 (12:00-2:30) and 21 (12:00-2:00), after the worship service. The first workshop will share the documentary “Trapped” and facilitate a discussion. The second will share with participants current legislation both in Michigan and in the nation and provide steps for actions to take. Sign-up will be available on Sundays, September 30 and October 7, so that the team can plan to provide a light lunch to participants.

Getting to Know the Shared Interest Groups

Would you like to get more involved with UU members and friends? We offer a large variety of groups and activities that might be of interest to you. We have put together a flyer listing all the groups with dates/times/locations of meetings, and leaders’ contact information including photos so that you can easily spot the leaders and talk to them on Sundays after the service. Hard copies will be available at the church this Sunday, but the information is on our website as well.

Happy Birthday!

Are you on our birthday calendar? Please click here to make sure you are! If you are not, contact Gisela (989-772-1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com) who will add your special day. Then we can sing to you at our monthly First Friday Potluck too!

Veggies from George

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, and cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.

A Way to Raise Your Voice

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has proposed changes to the K-12 social studies curriculum.  The new standards would eliminate any mention of LGBT rights, the NAACP, Roe v. Wade, climate change and “core democratic values.”  The final draft version of the Social Studies Standards: 2007 to 2018 Side-by-Side Comparison is available for review and online public comment until September 30, 2018. Even if you are not a social studies teacher, you know what you would like your children or grandchildren to be learning, so the Social Justice Coordinating Team encourages you to take time to read the proposed standards and comment!

Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights Interfaith Conference

Inclusive Justice and the Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN), along with other organizations, is offering an interfaith conference titled “Faith, LGBTQ Inclusion & Human Rights” on Friday, October 19, from 9 am-4 pm in Clawson, Michigan.
