eNews for Thursday, September 30

New Window!
In our continued efforts to improve the safety conditions in our building, the Building Team has completed a new egress window in the upstairs youth room.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, October 3 to worship together with Laura McBride, who will present “Are You Listening,” by Rev. David Ruffin. The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Reverend Ruffin links using listening as a practice of showing truth in love, especially in communities such as UUFCM. He asserts that “Listening is an act of love that makes way for the deepest of truths.”

COVID Update

  • We are continuing hybrid services (in person/Zoom)
    throughout the month of October.
If you signed up for in-person services in October, you should have received an email indicating which two services you’ve been assigned to attend and how to switch if you need to. Contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) if you’re unsure.

  • Right now, small groups up to ten people can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
While the Board of Trustees has approved policies for Fellowship gatherings as we seek to reconnect in person safely, please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

If you are interested in helping any of these teams or committees, please fill out the Volunteer Opportunity Form 2021-2022 if you haven’t already.

Infant Pantry Collection - October 3

We collect donations for the Infant Pantry on the first Sunday of each month. You can donate online to the Monthly Donations for Infant Pantry on our website or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with Infant Pantry in the memo. Questions? Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu).

UUFCM Men’s Group - October 4

The UU men's group meets on the 1st Mondays at 7pm via Zoom, unless otherwise notified. We meet primarily for social reasons - to get to know each other better and to provide support when called for. We normally have general conversations of both public and personal issues instead of formal discussions. Contact Jim Dealing with questions. All are welcome.

Adult RE Series on Retirement Begins October 6

Is the idea of retirement a positive or a negative for you? Americans are particularly ambivalent about retirement. Our ideas about age and about work encourage many of us to avoid thinking about retirement and to put it off as long as we can, and retirement doesn't work for some people. Indeed, after retirement many choose to go back to work and not primarily for economic reasons. Yet, an international survey identified the decade of the sixties as the most satisfying time of life, a time of enhanced freedom and opportunity.

On the four Wednesdays in October, Jim Dealing will facilitate discussion of this important chapter in our lives. The plan is to include retirees and those not yet retired, to discuss in small groups their concerns and their experience. We will discuss the pros and cons of retirement, exploring a variety of relevant issues, including health, social connections, meaning and purpose, and spiritual dimensions. The objective is how best to make the most of this time.

The class will run from 7-8 or 8:30pm, and will be held via Zoom. The link to the meeting can be found on the UUFCM calendar. Please let Jim Dealing know if you are or may be interested in participating.

Soulful Sundown - October 7

Join us on the first Thursday of the month for an uplifting service of songs, drumming, poetry, and reflection, beginning at 7 p.m. All are welcome: all ages, all genders, colors, beliefs. This month’s theme is Cultivating Relationship. This will be a hybrid event. Join us in person if you are vaccinated (and please wear your mask), or join us via Zoom.

Coffee House Open Mic - October 8

Bring your favorite beverage and join us for a coffee house on the first Friday of the month at 7pm. We will follow an open mic format: anyone can share some music or poetry. Aim for 5 minutes for your song or poem. Signing up ahead of time is encouraged: contact Drew at minister.uufcm.org or 440-935-0129. Get ready for a groovy time! This will be a hybrid event. Join us in person if you are vaccinated (and please wear your mask), or join us via Zoom.

Want to Be of Help?

The Arms Around committee wants to increase the number of volunteers. This care committee responds to Joys and Concerns, drives people to doctor appointments, makes meals, and runs errands for patients recovering at home. We are looking for people who would like to be drivers or provide help with errands or meals. Our goal is to have enough people on the volunteer list that each one will only be called occasionally. Please contact Gisela (gbmoffit@gmail.com) for more information and to sign up. Thank you in advance.

UUFCM Flower Connection

This is the time of year when we start cleaning up our gardens, removing wilted and half-dead flowers and the ever-present weeds. Instead of throwing them all out, could you cut off the seed heads of perennial flowers and save the seeds in bags labeled with the names of the flowers? Get them to Gisela by December so that we can share them in the spring and make our connections with one another visible in our gardens.

What You Can Do to Support Our Voting Rights

Now that the legislators are back in session, here are some things that you can do so that our constitutional right to vote is not in any way limited.
  • Educate yourself. Using this summary of the proposed 39 bills, educate yourself about their content and then share that information with our family members and friends.
  • You can financially support or volunteer for any of the coalition of organizations working to counter these bills – the NAACP, the ACLU, Promote the Vote, Voters Not Politicians, and our own UUA and MUUSJN.
  • Contact our 33rd Michigan Senate District Senator Rick Outman (SenROutman@senate.michigan.gov) sharing your concerns.
One of the easiest things you can do is sign up for Voters Not Politicians’ “Dial for Democracy” action. They alert you when legislative action is going to occur in Lansing and give you talking points and the link to send your message. Super easy – it takes ten minutes to complete – and it makes a difference!

George’s Veggies

George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has plenty of tomatoes, kale, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, and more. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.
