eNews for Wednesday, August 16

8/16/2017

Yearning for a new way will not produce it. Only ending the old way can do that.

~ Richard Rohr
Photos from the
Sunday, August 13
Vigil for Charlottesville
Special thanks to Aaron Jones, of CMU's School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, and Anastasia Klimovitz.
We so appreciate you sharing your photos with us!
In Worship
The theme for our worship service this coming Sunday, August 20, will be “To Wake, To Rise” with a
post-Charlottesville reflection by our minister. We held a vigil of solidarity last Sunday evening…now what?
How do we move from being allies to advocates – and do we know the difference? Please join us!

“Our times ask us to exercise our capacity for prophetic witness. By prophetic witness I mean our capacity
to see what is happening, to say what is happening and to act in accordance with what we know.
Prophetic witness is the ability to name those places where we resist knowing what needs to be known.”
~ Rebecca Parker

Upcoming Services
August 27: “The Stories We Choose to Tell Matter”
September Worship Theme: “What Does It Mean to Be a People of Welcome?”

We Need to Hear from You If…
…you moved, got a new phone number or an additional email address, etc. We are in the process of updating the Directory, and want to be as accurate and current as possible. So we need your help! Please check your listing here. It is password protected, so if you do not remember the password, contact our administrative assistant, Kirsten at admin@uufcm.org or Gisela at gbmoffit@gmail.com. Deadline for updates: This Sunday, August 20th. Many thanks for your help!

Path to Membership Workshop - Saturday, August 26, 1-4 p.m. (note the new time!)
This quarterly workshop is designed for those who are feel ready to examine more closely the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session, we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and the shared ministry philosophy of this congregation. Childcare can be made available, if needed. Advance registration for this workshop is required – please contact either Laura McBride (989.772.5512; lmcbride010@gmail.com) or Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602 or gbmoffit@gmail.com) by Sunday, August 20, to reserve your place in the workshop!

Welcome to UU Class - Sunday, August 27
This class is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is the first in a series of three steps to membership at the UUFCM, and is offered every month on the fourth Sunday at 12:15 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes.

First Friday Potluck - September 1
Join us for our September First Friday communal nosh! We will also be celebrating the September birthdays of Alecia Genia, Carol Messick and Gisela Moffit. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

We need hosts for upcoming potlucks! If you are willing to host a potluck, please contact Jen Prout
(989-400-3130 or poutyprouty66@yahoo.com) or George Lentz (248-346-4039 or geolentz@gmail.com). Upcoming dates include: September 1, October 6, November 3 and December 1. If you enjoy the potlucks, please consider hosting - it is fun and easy!

Attention Veggie Lovers
George Lentz has a garden bursting with produce to share. If you have any interest in driving to his farm and bringing some home, please call him at 248-346-4039. His home is located at 5565 Madison Road south of Shepherd and north of Alma. He would appreciate a call so he can show all the areas of his garden that are ready for picking. Currently he has hot peppers, bell peppers, eggplant, squash, and tomatoes. He doesn't want the produce to go to waste, so please call!

Isabella County Restoration House Fundraiser - September 7
Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH - the rotating homeless shelter) has a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse on Thursday, September 7. Download and print the flyer for the coupon to participate.

Environmental Task Force
The Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) is forming an Environmental Task Force to address environmental issues at the local, state and national levels. See this announcement to see how you can get involved.
Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.
Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best
is power correcting everything that stands against love.

~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mindfulness in Parking Requested
Let us be mindful to leave the parking spaces directly across from our Wisconsin entrance open
for our friends who have mobility issues. Thank you for your consideration.
