We have only begun to imagine the fullness of life.
How could we tire of hope? – so much is in bud.
~ Denise Levertov
The presence of all members of the congregation is requested by the Board of Trustees at the Annual Meeting of the Congregation, which will be held this Sunday, May 15, 2016, at 12:00 p.m. – following our Flower Communion Service.
According to our bylaws, certain positions must be filled at the annual meeting. The congregation must also approve the budget for the upcoming church year, which begins on July 1st. A majority of members must be present for business to be conducted, so please plan to attend! If you cannot attend, please appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf, in writing or via email (which they will need to print and bring to the meeting). Annual Meeting is also a time when we honor the service of our many volunteers.
The Annual Meeting is a special event in the life of a congregation, so to celebrate, we plan to break bread together with a community luncheon immediately following the meeting. The luncheon is a potluck, so please bring a dish to pass if you didn't get a chance to sign up last Sunday.
In Worship
This Sunday, May 15, come celebrate the affirming, uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual of Flower Communion. Developed by Czech Unitarian minister Norbert Capek who died a martyr at Dachau, the ritual celebrates the unity within our diversity and the intrinsic beauty of each and every soul. Please remember to bring a flower with you to service – preferably a flower you really love – to place in the communal vase in front of the sanctuary. And if you forget a flower, don't worry - we will have extra ones. We will also be honoring the upcoming graduation of our high school senior, Elliott McBride. Please join us!
Upcoming Services:
May 22 - “The Gift of the Postscript”
May 29 - “Forgiveness”
Welcome to UU Class - Sunday, May 22 at 1:00
We will be offering a Welcome to UU class onSunday, May 22 after the service at 12:00 p.m. This class is for newcomers to Unitarian Universalism as well as those who have been around for a while who want to learn more about this faith, and is also the first step on the “pathway to membership” in this community.
General Assembly Delegates Needed!
The General Assembly for the Unitarian Universalist Association is June 22-26 in Columbus, Ohio! This is the closest its been in awhile. We need one more person to represent us at Plenary meetings as a delegate. Please contact Annette Pratt for more information ([email protected] or 989-400-0173).
Volunteers Needed for Summer RE
Volunteers are needed for our Religious Education program for our children for this summer. We need one adult for each Sunday this summer (June through August). Each Sunday you will be provided with the opening ritual, story or brief lesson, and then the children will work on a related craft or work in the garden we are planting on the east side of the building. No preparation is needed; everything will be written out and provided for you to simply arrive at 10:00 on Sunday morning to look over the plan. As well, you will have a teen helper. Norma Bailey is coordinating this effort, so please contact her (989-560-3952 or [email protected]) or see her at church on Sunday to sign up.
Interfaith Reproductive Justice Conference
The Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) and the Interfaith Reproductive Justice Coalition are sponsoring an Interfaith Reproductive Justice Conference at the Woodside Church, United Church of Christ, in Flint on Friday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be updates on legislation, skills training workshops, issues workshops, and speakers from three national organizations. Registration is $20 (early bird) and is done individually (download the form here). Norma Bailey is attending, so please contact her if you would like to share rides (989-560-3952 or [email protected]).
Marching in the Alma Highland Festival Parade
We are again going to march in the Alma Highland Festival Parade on Saturday, May 28 (Memorial Day weekend). While the parade starts at 10:30 and is completed by about 11:30, we would need to be there to line up no later than 10:00. Vicki Chessin is organizing us and getting our parade banner ready, so please contact her ([email protected]) or Norma Bailey ([email protected]) to join us. We would love to have a large contingent of Mt. Pleasant UUs!
The temple bell stops but I still hear the sound coming out of the flowers.
