eNews for Wednesday, May 30

There is a reality in blessing... It doesn’t enhance sacredness,
but it acknowledges it.
~ Marilynne Robinson

Worship Matters

This Sunday, June 3, we will begin our exploration of the question “What does it mean to be a people of blessing?” with a message from our minister titled “The Wider View” - we hope you will join us!

So what, then, does it mean to offer a blessing, to be a blessing?
To bless something or someone is to invoke its wholeness, to help remind the person or thing you are blessing of its essence, its sacredness, its beauty,
and to help remind yourself of that, too. Blessing does not fix anything.
It is not a cure… It does not instill health or well-being or strength. Instead,
it reminds us that those things are already there, within us.     ~ Elea Kemler

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

June 10: “Original Blessing”
June 17: “Crazy Blessed”

RE News

We need volunteers!

The summer RE program relies on volunteers to help in the garden, assist with lessons, and provide nursery care as needed. We will need two people per Sunday, with no maximum number of Sundays you can volunteer for! Anna will have a sign up sheet available Sundays after service, or you can email her at vanar1ae@cmich.edu. Please let her know if you have any questions.

See behind-the-scenes photos from the Mother's Day breakfast on our website!

Path to Membership Workshop - June 2

The Path to Membership workshop has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 2nd rom 1-3 pm. Please let Laura McBride know if you plan to attend (Lmcbride010@gmail.com; 989.772.5512). Childcare is available.

Infant Pantry Collection - Sunday, June 3

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. We have quite a reputation at the Infant Pantry for providing lots of useful materials. Let's keep it up - next collection will be June 3. Needs are
still for diapers, lotions, etc., and money.  If you want to donate money, then
the check should be made out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Please contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602;
moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with any questions.

Making Our Church Look Pretty

We have reason to be joyful and grateful: James Hatcher and Norma Bailey worked in 90 degree weather to free our flower beds from weeds and planted about 100 begonias in front of the church on Wisconsin street and all around our “Wayside Pulpit” sign. It was very hard work as the soil was filled with roots from the trees and bushes. Thank you so much for sharing your time, energy and muscles with us on this project. Anybody else interested in helping with some weeding or trimming? Tom Moffit would love to hear from you!

Rename Congregational Life Ministry Team!

The Congregational Life Ministry Team (CLMT) made up of membership, Arms Around program, communication, stewardship, social fun, and building/grounds is looking for a new name! It's an unwieldy name for an interesting group of programs. We are collecting suggestions for renaming this team. A prize for the name selected will be given. Please send your suggestions to Gisela Moffit, Team Leader at gbmoffit@gmail.com. Names will be collected until June 30 and chosen at the July CLMT meeting.

The Poor People's Campaign

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is being held in Michigan at the Lansing Capitol Lawn from 11 am to 4 pm every Monday (and one Tuesday) beginning on May 14 until June 18 to fight for freedom and dignity of every person in our country. The themes for the six weeks are:
  • Monday, May 14th: Somebody's Hurting Our People: Child poverty, Women, LGBTQIA+, and People with Disabilities
  • Monday, May 21st: Linking Systemic Racism and Poverty: Voting Rights, Ending Mass Incarceration, Treatment of Indigenous People and Justice for Immigrants
  • Tuesday, May 29th: Militarism: The War Economy, Veterans, Education and Our National Priorities
  • Monday, June 4th: Ecological Devastation and Health: Clean Air, Clean Water, and Healthcare for All
  • Monday, June 11th: Everybody’s Got a Right to Live: Jobs, Income, the Right to Organize, and Housing
  • Monday, June 18th: A New and Unsettling Force: A Fusion Movement Rising Up
The Poor People’s Campaign is uniting tens of thousands of people across the country to challenge the evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nation’s distorted morality. For more information:
  • Email: info@poorpeoplescampaign.org
  • Facebook: Michigan Poor Peoples Campaign:
A National Call for Moral Revival
  • Website: poorpeoplescampaign.org
Let’s join them! If you are interested in attending any of the Mondays (or Tuesday), contact Norma Bailey (989-560-3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu).

Safety Information

The UUFCM Board recently established a Safety Task Force to assist us in developing policy and procedures for safety measures needed in the event of dangerous circumstances that may result via nature and/or human intent. Be aware that as we work to become a more safety-conscious congregation, you will be seeing some changes to help make us safer from fire, tornados, and potential assailants. Please take the time to read the article “Sunday Security” on page 40 in the Spring 2018 issue of UU World magazine. It explains how the UUA and individual congregations are becoming more safety proactive.

Breathing in the beauty of nature is not the whole answer
to the personal and public problems that weigh us down.
But for me, it’s an important first step toward gaining hope
and taking heart so I can get back into the fray.
~ Parker Palmer
