When we decide to cancel or postpone a UUFCM event due to weather--as we did due to last Sunday's ice storm--we use a cell phone app called Remind to make these announcements. In the case of Sunday morning worship, we make our decision by 8:30 am.

Suggestions for Bylaws Changes - Due January 1

Any individual UUFCM members who wish to propose changes to the bylaws for consideration at the annual meeting in May may submit written suggestions to Board president Aaron Jones (989.501.0672; [email protected]) by January 1, 2025.

CUUPs Yule Ritual - Sunday, December 22

Yule, the winter solstice, is a time of great symbolism and power. It marks the return of the sun, when the days finally begin to get a little longer. It’s also a time to celebrate with family and friends and share the spirit of giving. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6pm.

No Movie Night in December

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, Movie Night is taking a short break this December. But don’t worry—come January, we’ll be back in full swing with a great movie, popcorn, and hopefully you!

Welcome to UU Orientation – Sunday, December 22

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month both in person in the fellowship hall and via Zoom, typically on the last Sunday at 12:00pm. Sessions run approximately an hour and a half.

First Friday Potluck – Friday, January 3

Infant Pantry Collection – Sunday, January 5

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. You can donate online to the Monthly Donations for Infant Pantry on our website, or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with Infant Pantry in the memo. Questions? UUFCM's Path to Membership

A Path to Membership class is being planned for January! Keep an eye on the eNews for the official announcement. Typically, the class takes place on a Saturday from 1:00–3:00 PM. For any questions, feel free to reach out to Laura McBride or Rev. Drew.

How to Fight Back Beyond Sending Money

Your Social Justice Coordinating Team is suggesting that there are other ways beyond sending money to help fight the effects of the results of the state and national elections this fall: volunteer with justice organizations; monitor legislative activity; sign petitions and send emails; and volunteer locally.

If you are interested in knowing ways to fight back beyond sending money, a list of ideas from your Social Justice Coordinating Team can be found here. We would particularly like to encourage you to sign up for our Social Justice Interest Survey (https://www.uufcm.org/social-justice-interest-survey.html) and the Dial for Democracy (https://votersnotpoliticians.com/dial/).

The holiday season often brings a rush of shoppers eager to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. While gift-giving is a cherished tradition, it's also a time to be mindful of the impact on overconsumption and waste. Here are some sustainable tips for this holiday season:

Choose long-lasting or reusable gifts that can be recycled later.
Make your own gifts, like homemade breads, cakes, or crafts such as jewelry or crochet.
Limit the number of gifts you buy.
Bring your own reusable tote bag when shopping.
Use only the amount of wrapping paper you need.
Wrap gifts in reusable bags.

UUA Common Read

Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families

This book has been designated by the Unitarian Universalist Association as the “common read” for 2024-25. All UU congregations are encouraged to read and study this book. More information, including study guides and videos, can be found on the UUA website at:

Rev. Drew will lead a discussion of the book at a time to be announced. Depending on interest, discussions may be in a mixed group...or there may be a separate group for trans and nonbinary people and their families.

Ten copies of the book have been purchased for UUFCM, and they are in the fellowship hall. Your options include:
-       take a copy and keep it
-       borrow a copy and return it to the UUFCM library
-       purchase your own copy at the online UUA bookstore

Now Hiring: Two Job Postings for UUFCM Religious Education

We are looking to hire two people for our religious education program. The Assistant position ($15 per hour, 2-3 hours per week) is available immediately. The Facilitator position ($16 per hour, up to 6 hours per week) is available January 1st, when our current facilitator Seally is leaving.

Choosing Where to Give: End-of-Year Donations 2024

In previous years, your Social Justice Coordinating Team has suggested that your donations in the holiday and end-of-year giving season be given to meet local, national, and global needs with a focus on advocacy for change locally, nationally, and internationally for global justice and peace.

This year, as a result of the state and national elections this fall, many of the organizations working for justice will need additional support to combat the efforts that are already being made to undo some of the protections that have been put in place for many years.

Minister’s Column

It is well-known that the 2016 election of Donald Trump caused a spike in attendance at UU congregations—often referred to among ministers as the “Trump Bump.” At the time, my seminary studies took me away from regular Sunday worship, so I did not experience this first-hand. Nonetheless, I knew that a Trump electoral victory in 2024 would similarly result in more new people attending UUFCM services. This has proven to be true the past two Sundays. More brand-new people, more people who attend occasionally, more people who have been away for years. I believe they come because they are trying to process the new moment in America and what it means; they come because they are seeking community with liberal and progressive people; they come because they are scared, angry or sad and need to be comforted. Some new people may be reading this column for the first time, having just signed up.

November Theme: Repair

In our series of monthly themes addressed in Sunday worship, November calls us to reflect on Repair. An eight-page packet of activities, questions, poems, music, and spiritual practices related to Repair is available here.

Movie Night - Saturday, November 23

The movie follows the story of Finn Bell, an aspiring artist from a humble background, whose life changes dramatically after a chance encounter with an escaped convict and a wealthy, eccentric woman. As Finn grows up, he finds himself drawn into a complicated world of ambition, romance, and betrayal—all while being haunted by a mysterious benefactor.

Sleepy Time Yoga - Monday, December 2

Kelly Lawson is offering an evening of Yoga Nidra on the first Monday of each month. The next session is Monday, December 2, 7:00-8:00pm in the UU sanctuary. Bring a yoga mat, blankets, pillows, or anything to get cozy. The evening is donation-based, and all donations will go to the renovations of the homeless shelter (ICRH).

Join Kelly for this gentle and restful practice of Yoga Nidra! The evening will begin with gentle movement before finding rest in Savasana (final resting pose) for a guided meditation.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 17, to worship with Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present "Guest at Your Table." The Zoom call starts at 10:00am for social time, and the service starts at 10:30am.

"Guest at Your Table is a program of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee to partner with human rights organizations domestically and abroad. This year Guest at Your Table supports projects addressing these four issues: transgender safety in the US; climate activism in the Pacific; LGBTQ refugees in Ukraine; and racism in the US immigration system. In our worship service we celebrate the good work being done; and we recognize that together we create greater justice and greater joy."

Minister’s Column

As I reflect on last week’s election, I am thinking about gender. I was truly expecting Kamala Harris to win on the strength of female voters. Instead, it feels like America is unwilling to elect a female president. We have re-elected a rampant misogynist in Donald Trump, and we have put a political party in power that keeps enacting absurdly strict anti-abortion laws. Taking these things together, I feel that the rights and dignity of women have been badly harmed by this election. As a man, I call on other men to speak out for the sake of protecting and honoring women.

Boot Drive for Kids! - Extended through Sunday, November 17

The Social Justice Coordinating Team (SJCT) is leading a Boot Drive for Kids to collect new and very gently used boots, any size, for school children and teens. The drive goes through November 17, and the boots will be donated to Clothing, INC, in time for parents to get boots before winter hits. Please place them in the box provided in the Fellowship Hall by November 17. If you’re not a shopper, any member of the SJCT will be glad to shop for you!

Partnering to Serve: Saturday, November 16

UUFCM is a partner with St. John's Church, helping to provide food for guests at the homeless shelter. We will be serving dinner on Saturday, November 16.

Special Plate Collection This Sunday, November 17

This Sunday, a collection will be taken to support the UUSC - Unitarian Unversalist Service Committee. You can put a donation into the passed plate on Sunday, donate online to the Social Justice Special Plate Collections Fund at our website, or checks can be sent to our treasurer made out to UUFCM with Guest at Your Table in the memo.

If you wish to have a membership in UUSC, fill out the UUSC envelope form with your cash or check made out to UUSC, and put it in the collection plate.

Welcome to UU Orientation – This Sunday, November 17

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month both in person in the fellowship hall and via Zoom, at 12:00pm. Sessions run approximately an hour and a half.

Transgender Day of Remembrance - Wednesday, November 20

The purpose of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, held on November 20 every year since 1998, is to remember the people who have lost their lives this year due to anti-transgender violence. In this service we lament this injustice; we commit to working for the rights and dignity of transgender, gender-queer, and gender non-binary people everywhere; and we name our hopes for the lives they will live. The Crafty U group is moving to the 3rd Tuesday of each month, providing more opportunities for people to gather and enjoy crafting together. This year, meetings will be held on Tuesday, November 19, and Tuesday, December 17, at 10:30am. Bring along your current project, and enjoy a friendly and creative atmosphere with other crafters. All types of crafting are welcome!

No More Open Cups in the Sanctuary

We are asking everyone to help us abide by a policy that we haven’t been enforcing recently. “Drink is permitted in the sanctuary during worship services as long as it is in closed containers.”

Starting this Sunday, if you get coffee, tea or water in a cup from the Fellowship Hall prior to the worship service and wish to take it into the sanctuary, please use the hot cups with a cover that we will provide. Thanks for your help with this matter.

Hiring Youth Religious Education Assistant

As Seally is starting her employment, Jolie Damer-Daigle is moving on. This leaves an opening for Youth Religious Education Assistant, to be filled as soon as possible.

In keeping with the various traditions of All Souls Day, Samhain, and Día de Muertos, we take this day to remember those who have died and to welcome them as living spirits. What do we have to learn from the ancestors? How can we keep alive their memory and honor them?"

Minister’s Column

This Monday I spent my day off traveling to Ann Arbor to hear Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. After finding parking, I walked across the University of Michigan campus, filled with students and the unmistakable energy of a college in the middle of the fall semester. Getting close to the city park where the rally was held, I saw the line that stretched for many blocks—it took several minutes just to find the end of the line. In the next hour, I made new friends with those around me as the line snaked through the sidewalks of a beautiful Ann Arbor neighborhood in the afternoon light amid gorgeous fall colors.

Samhain (pronounced SAH-win) is a holiday known by another name - Halloween. The ancients believed this was the time of year when the veil between the living and those passed was the thinnest. It is a time to remember those who have passed before us and listen to their stories that still live on inside us. It is also the Pagan “new year” with death and birth being two sides of the same coin. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6:00pm.

Sleepy Time Yoga - Monday, November 4

Kelly Lawson is offering an evening of Yoga Nidra on Monday, November 4, 7:00-8:00pm in the UU sanctuary. Bring a yoga mat, blankets, pillows, or anything to get cozy. The evening is donation-based, and all donations will go to the renovations of the homeless shelter (ICRH).

Join Kelly for this gentle and restful practice of Yoga Nidra! The evening will begin with gentle movement before finding rest in Savasana (final resting pose) for a guided meditation.

Post-Election Gathering - Wednesday, November 6

Drop-in 10:00-5:00; Vigil 5:00-6:00
On the day after the election, we may be feeling tired, joyful, anxious, or something else. Chances are high that we will be waiting for results. UUFCM will be open for support and community starting at 10:00 am. If you need a prayer or a hug or someone to talk to, please stop by.

At 5:00 we will have a ceremony including praying for democracy and humanity, and allowing everyone to speak their hopes and fears aloud.

A Successful Outdoor Clean-Up

Much gratitude to Daniel Davis, Kirsten King, Darlene Ritchie, Jim Dealing, Gisela Moffit, Kurt Roeder, Mary Alsager, Drew Frantz, and James Scott for their efforts to clean up our grounds on Saturday! Thanks, too, to Norma Bailey for edging the sidewalks last week! We raked (this will need to be done again), cleaned out flower beds, trimmed the lilacs, edged the sidewalks, trimmed the evergreen bushes, and put the hose to bed for the winter.

"Listening to other people is an important practice. Another form of listening is how we listen to Life–or some would say “to God.” What do the flowing river and the autumn trees tell us? What does the flow of energy and vitality within us say? What does the voice of this nation with its many peoples say? In order to listen this deeply we must be still and we must open ourselves in new ways."

Just now I filled out my absentee ballot. Sitting with my wife at the dining room table, we made sure we were following the directions; we double-checked our research for the obscure down-ballot races and the non-partisan section. The ballots are sealed and will be dropped off tomorrow. As I write this, election day is two weeks away.

Determined to follow his passion, he sneaks into a museum and takes a famous guitar belonging to a legendary musician. Suddenly, Miguel is transported to the Land of the Dead. Will he make it back to the world of the living, or will he be stuck there forever? Join us at 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall to find out!

UUFCM Annual Harvest Feast - October 27

It's Harvest time! Join us after the church service in the Library Annex on Sunday, October 27, for our Annual Harvest Feast. Let's come together to share delicious food and warm conversation.
Want to help? There are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand, and sign-up sheets are available in the fellowship hall. Here's how you can contribute:

Set-up (Saturday, October 26, at 4:00pm in the Annex): Help us arrange tables and chairs, decorate, and bring supplies over from the church.
Clean-up (after the feast): Pitch in to wash dishes, put away chairs and tables, and return items to the church.
Meat, mashed potatoes and gravy will be provided.
Bring a dish to pass:
- Casseroles: Bring your favorite hearty dish!
- Side dishes
- Desserts: Yes, please—sweets are always welcome!

Ordination of Brigitte Bechtold

Brigitte is a longstanding member of UUFCM who has now become a UU minister. After earning her Master of Divinity degree at Meadville Lombard Theological School, Brigitte is now serving the Beacon UU Congregation in Troy. She still lives in Mount Pleasant and continues to be a member of our Buddhist sangha. Having completed all the requirements of ministry in our tradition, Brigitte Bechtold will be ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry by the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation on October 27, 2024.

Brigitte, the whole UUFCM rejoices in your call to ministry and wishes you the best in your ministerial journey. Congratulations!
