eNews for Thursday, April 21

New Sidewalk!

The city has replaced the Wisconsin Street sidewalk and will be planting two new trees where indicated.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, April 24 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Poetry Service: Awakening.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Poetry is one of the highest forms of human expression, and is well-suited to emotional and spiritual subjects. Any poem can be a sacred text if the reader finds deep truth and meaning there. In celebration of April as National Poetry Month, and in the spirit of the monthly worship theme of Awakening, we will share poems that inspire us and call us to greater awareness.”

COVID Update

  • We have resumed hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). As a reminder, our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated and must wear a mask, which applies to children also.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Anyone vaccinated and wearing a mask may attend services.

  • Right now, small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Activities for Native American Learning, Understanding, and Appreciation

As a result of our congregational retreat in January, the Anti-Racism Task Force has planned a series of activities for us to engage in to help us learn, understand and appreciate our Native American neighbors. We hope that each of you will choose to participate in at least one of the activities, and hopefully more! Get the details here.

Warrior Lawyers Documentary

April 29 from 6:30-8:30

Warrior Lawyers: Defenders of Sacred Justice is a one-hour PBS documentary that is particularly timely and relevant given our country's current reckoning with racial inequity and systemic racism. The program focuses on the stories of Michigan Native American Lawyers, Tribal Judges and their colleagues who work with Native Nations, their citizens and mainstream institutions to achieve Sacred Justice. Come take a journey into past and present day Indian Country to learn of untold stories that shine a light on Native Americans rising up to create a new path for today and for the next Seven Generations. A one hour panel discussion will follow the documentary. Download the flyer for full information.

Promote the Vote 2022 Petitions Available

Petitions are now available! We need people willing to gather signatures in support of the Promote the Vote 2022 petition drive; contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) for a brief training, get a petition to circulate, and/or sign up to help at the farmers market. Petitions will also be available to sign after each worship service. Let’s live our values by participating in this most democratic process!

Three Other Petitions to Sign

There are three other petitions that are supported by the Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN) that your Social Justice Coordinating Team (SJCT) encourages you to sign when they are available. Each clearly supports our UU values. Download this list which gives information about each petition.

Mother Earth Love (MEL)

Simple Changes Make a Difference!
Our knowledge, motivation, and new habits we incorporate into our daily lives can help the healing of our Mother Earth. Individual actions we take can collectively make a difference. Please share your stories, comments, and questions.
This Friday is Earth Day, celebrating its 52nd year since April 22, 1970. Its history is a story of the collaboration between government, young activists, and common people who learned together, changed governmental policies, and began to make a difference. Since then, what have we gained? What are we losing? What can we do, as a religious community, to make a difference with Mother Earth?

Learn more about Earth Day, get a glimpse of its rich history, and explore actions we can take to honor this special day.
