eNews for Thursday, June 15

Our UUFCM Banner Is Flying Downtown!

The banner painted by our UUFCM youth is now flying on Broadway Street with the other Festival of Banners contributions.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, June 18 to worship together with Laura McBride, who will present “Church: To Be and To Do,” by the Rev. Byron ‘Tyler’ Coles. The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“In this sermon, Rev. Coles asks the question, ‘Where do we find help in these sorrowful times?’ He explores the role of a church community to support each other in times of struggle.”

Summer Schedule

Simplified Worship

Welcome to summer! For the next nine weeks, Sunday morning services will be slightly simpler with no choir and no children’s story. Six services during the summer will be led by lay worship leaders Laura McBride, Norma Bailey and Jessica Jernigan; two will be led by Rev. Drew Frantz.

Minister’s Time Off

Rev. Drew takes six weeks of time off during the summer months, and is also away for a full week at General Assembly. He will be here to lead worship July 9 and August 13. Although regular office hours are suspended for the summer, you may still contact Drew with any urgent Fellowship business if needed, or with significant pastoral care needs. Texting 440-935-0129 is the best way to reach Rev. Drew.

General Assembly

Sunday, June 25, will feature the national broadcast of the worship service from General Assembly in Pittsburgh. On that day, we will not meet at all in the UU building. The livestream begins at 11am, and you can find that link here, on the UUFCM Calendar, and in the June 24th Sunday Service Reminder email. Learn more about the service here.

UUFCM is Hiring!

UUFCM is looking to hire a new Director of Religious Education. If you know anyone interested and qualified, please encourage them to apply, as the best employees sometimes are recruited by word of mouth. UUFCM policy states that we usually do not hire members of the congregation to be employees. Applications and inquiries should go to Rev. Drew. The job posting is here and on our website:
  • Job posting for Director of Religious Education
(6-10 hours per week starting August 15)

Congratulations to Our Graduates!

Congratulations to our graduates (and to their parents) – Ila Swier, Elliot Moreno, and Tanyth Bass from high school, Elijah Lifson from culinary school, and Katie Fisher from CMU (belatedly)! Their accomplishments were celebrated on Sunday, June 11.

Potatoes Are Planted!

Felix and Aaron Jones, Monica Jean, and Norma Bailey planted our youth garden with potatoes, as well as fencing the plots in to protect them from the bunnies!

Special Plate Collection - This Sunday, June 18

This Sunday a collection will be taken to supplement the minister’s discretionary fund which is used to respond to requests from people in the community who might need gas money, money to pay an electric bill, a night in a hotel, etc. The fund is particularly low right now because of so much need. You can donate online to this fund at our website or checks can be made out to UUFCM with “Discretionary Fund” indicated in the memo line, and sent to UUFCM Treasurer, P.O. Box 41, Mt. Pleasant, MI, 48804-0041.

CUUPs Litha Ritual - June 18

Covenant of UU Pagans

Solstice, or Litha means a stopping or standing still of the sun. It is the longest day of the year and the time when the sun is at its maximum elevation. This is also a time to celebrate growth and life for those who see balance in the world and are deeply aware of the ongoing shifting of the seasons. It is also time to acknowledge that the sun will now begin to decline once more towards winter.

We invite those of you who are interested to participate. We hold the ritual promptly at 6pm, in hybrid format (in-person/Zoom). There will be no potluck.

Directory Update!

Every summer we update our Directory with a printed Addendum, which includes new people, changes in names, postal addresses, emails, and phone numbers. Please help us to make our Directory current by checking your printed Directory of February 2023 and/or the online one and let us know if your entries have changed. The Directory is password protected. If you can't remember the password, please contact Gisela Moffit. Deadline for submission is Wednesday, June 21. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Movie Night - June 24

You know that saying “some people are born on third base and think they hit a triple?” What happens when the family's patriarch decides his offspring need to realize that he hit the triple and they need to step into the batter box. Join us on Saturday, June 24 at 7pm to watch this star-studded cast including Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana De Armas, and others in Knives Out.

Drawing Workshop - Cancelled June 27

We will not meet on June 27, but will resume on July 11!

June 30 Ends Our 2022-2023 Fiscal Year

Our 2022-2023 fiscal year ends on June 30. If you haven’t had a chance to complete your pledge for this year, please try to do this by the 30th if you can.

Bookshelf in the Fellowship Hall

The new bookshelf in the Fellowship Hall is designed for us to share books with one another! Our intent is to populate the bookshelf with a variety of books; suggestions are books about Unitarian Universalism, all religions, social justice topics, poetry and banned books (not encouraging romance and mystery novels, nor magazines, for example). The book share system is easy – if you have a book to share, put it on the shelf, and if you want to take a book, feel free to take it home to read and return it (or not!).
