eNews for Thursday, March 24

Trees Removed

Last Saturday, the trees on the Wisconsin Street side of our building were taken down because the city will be widening the sidewalk. The city is providing two new trees to be planted this spring – an Apollo maple and a Regal Prince oak.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in-person this Sunday, March 27 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Thomas Merton, Christian Mystic.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

There is still room for people to worship in-person on March 27. Contact Norma Bailey if you are interested in coming!

“Thomas Merton was a Catholic monk whose 1948 autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, became a bestseller. As a hermit, he experienced God directly through an intense practice of prayer; as a writer, he advocated for nonviolence; as a scholar, he communicated with devotees of other religions around the world. All three of these parts of Merton’s life and work are relevant to Unitarian Universalists.”

You can read the Minister’s Column at uufcm.org/andrew-frantz.

COVID Update

  • We have resumed hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). As a reminder, our current policy is everyone entering the building must be vaccinated and must wear a mask, which applies to children also.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Beginning Sunday, April 3 there will be no need to sign up to attend services. Anyone vaccinated and wearing a mask may attend.

  • Right now, small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Welcome to UU Orientation - March 27

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month both in person in the fellowship hall and via Zoom on the last Sunday at 12:30 pm. Sessions run approximately an hour and a half.

If you are interested in watching an introductory video regarding our faith, please view this YouTube video by Peter Bowden called Unitarian Universalism: You're Uni-What?.

For more info or to register for Welcome to UU, contact:
Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 [email protected]
Please let Laura know whether you will be attending via Zoom or in-person by the Friday prior to the orientation.

Like to Sing? Come Join the Choir!

If you like to sing, even if you don’t read music, now would be a perfect time to join us as we are now singing in the sanctuary! We rehearse on Sundays at 7pm and Sundays at 9:30am. Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or [email protected] if you have questions.

Metal Schmetal!

We are planning a metal drive again this May (or so) to earn money for some good cause at the UUFCM, such as Leadership Development or our 20th Anniversary Celebration. As you begin to unthaw from winter and muck about in your garage, basement, shed, or barn, please set aside metal that you would like to donate. We can take appliances, but check with Laura to see if anything is prohibited or needs to be drained. You may call/text/email her at 989.772.5512 or [email protected]. Details for drop off and pick up will be shared in April.

Save the Date - Saturday, April 23 from 10-Noon

We are planning a clean-up of the outside of our building on Saturday, April 23, from 10am-noon! Please put this date on your calendar and plan to come to help beautify our church grounds.

How Do We Reduce Our Use of Fossil Fuels?

This is a big question this month economically, politically, and morally.
How do we reduce the gas in our car tanks? How do we use less natural gas/or propane gas? How can we, as a group of people in a religious community, make a difference? Let’s explore a bit about the backstory and then find an action you can take this week!

Come take a journey into past and present day Indian Country to learn of untold stories that shine a light on Native Americans rising up to create a new path for today and for the next Seven Generations.
