eNews for Thursday, May 26

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, May 29 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Necessary Beauty: Art as a Response to Trauma.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Experiencing beauty brings us into the present moment with a sense of belonging, safety, and peace. We need this in times of trauma and crisis. In public, artists create beauty that puts world events into perspective and calls us forward. Privately, each of us can use art to process the difficult things that we go through.”

COVID Update

  • We have resumed hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). As a reminder, our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt) and must wear a mask, which applies to children also.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Anyone vaccinated and wearing a mask may attend services.

  • Right now, small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our committees and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Flower Service - Sunday, June 5

Outdoors, Weather Permitting

The Flower Service is an annual tradition in Unitarian Universalism. Everyone is asked to bring a flower to share, if possible, and everyone goes home with a different flower.

This year we are doing this service outdoors--weather permitting—in the library parking lot facing the youth garden. Masks are optional. We will try our best to broadcast the service live via Zoom or another streaming service. In case of rain, the service will be moved indoors and masks will be required.

Summer Youth RE Plans

This week our Youth Religious Education program will shift to a variety of fun weekly summer activities after the story for all ages. These classes will be in-person only,  throughout the summer, and led by congregational and RE parent volunteers – youth of all ages are welcome! Please note that masks and COVID vaccinations are required to participate.

Mt. Pleasant Boarding School Discusion

Sunday, June 5 at 1pm - hybrid

Join a discussion of the “American Indians Boarding Schools” report and focus on our intention as we prepare to participate in the ceremony commemorating the closing of the Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School on Monday, June 6. Prior to the discussion, we recommend you read “American Indian Boarding Schools: An Exploration of Global Ethnic & Cultural Cleansing” (pp. 1-15).

Honoring, Healing & Remembering Day

Monday, June 6 from 7am-4pm at Ziibiwing Cultural Center

For complete information about the event, please download and read the flyer.
These two events are part of the Anti-Racism Task Force’s planned series of activities to help us learn, understand and appreciate our Native American neighbors. Get the details here.

Your Help Needed to Promote the Vote and Protect Reproductive Rights!

We need people willing to gather signatures in support of the Promote the Vote 2022 petition drive and the Reproductive Freedom for All petition drive. All you need to do is ask your friends and family members to sign. Contact Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) for a brief training and get a petition to circulate!
We are all shocked and saddened, once again, by a school shooting – this week in Uvalde, Texas. The Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence is a group dedicated to more sanity and safety in our gun laws. You can visit their website here.

Share Your Soles!

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is sponsoring a campaign to donate soles – tennis shoes, dress shoes, boots, slippers, flip flops, etc. of any kind, any size, any condition – which will be delivered to Clothing, INC monthly until our 20th anniversary celebration. This is a great opportunity for us to support our community as well as conserve Mother Earth as all donations will be either provided free to Clothing, INC guests or be sent to Lansing to be converted into other products – nothing will go to landfills!

Bring your soles to UUFCM any time you are in the building! There is a Share Your Soles! box in the Fellowship Hall, and monthly we will take them to Clothing, INC and announce the running total in the eNews. The only requirement is that you please either lace the shoes together or rubber band them (rubber bands provided).Click on the flyer graphic for more information.

In June, we celebrate the birthdays of Betty Clason, Nancy White, Dave Macleod, Karen Turnbull, Roxanne Fleer, and Carol Rard. For the year to come, we wish them much joy, good health for body and mind, and new (ad)ventures. May it be so.

Mother Earth Love (MEL)

Simple Changes Make a Difference!

Our knowledge, motivation, and new habits we incorporate into our daily lives can help the healing of our Mother Earth. Individual actions we take can collectively make a difference. Please share your stories, comments, and questions.
The complexity of the world and our environment right now with fires, storms, having a very abbreviated springtime – we are all feeling Climate Change – is up close and personal. So one might ask, “How can we make changes in our lives to make a difference?” or “What is one simple change we can make every month?” What are the answers and what are the solutions? Please explore here to find out ideas and draw your own conclusions.
