eNews for Thursday, November 10

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, November 13 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Restore, Renew, Recharge.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“This week includes Election Day, the culmination of intense volunteer efforts for some of us, also a source of great anxiety and hope for many of us. With the election behind us, we pause on Sunday morning to reflect on who we are and where we are now in a journey of life that is ever-changing. We pause to renew ourselves before the next thing we are called to do.”

Minister’s Column

This week Rev. Erika Hewitt reflected on the role of religion in politics, in her weekly “Braver/Wiser” column on the UUA website. Her thoughts are relevant to my experience yesterday as I worked as a poll monitor with two other UU ministers…

COVID Update

  • We continue with hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). Our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt), which applies to children also. Masks are optional for worship services and small group meetings.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Anyone vaccinated may attend services.

  • Small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our teams and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.

  • Indoor eating events are allowed – coffee hour, Friday night potlucks, and our annual Harvest Feast – as long as people are vaccinated.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Dinners for ICRH

It’s that time of the year again. The UUFCM is scheduled to provide dinners at St. John’s Church for the guests of the ICRH Homeless Shelter on Sunday, November 13, and Wednesday, November 16. We provide the main meal: salad, main entrée, side dishes, bread, and dessert. If you are interested in helping, please contact Joyce Henricks.

The Return of the Harvest Feast!

It’s back! It will be held in the Library Annex on November 20 following the church service. We will be counting on your help for things like setting up, cleaning up, “food runners,” and, of course, dishes to pass (yum)! Our trusty old sign-up sheets will be in the fellowship hall beginning this Sunday with multiple opportunities and ways you can assist. We will need an approximate number of people that plan to attend in order to determine the quantity of food to prepare. Please RSVP to Jen Prout (call or text) at 989-400-3130. We’re thankful for you all.

Learn About the Old Settlers of Michigan

The Old Settlers of Mecosta, Montcalm, and Isabella Counties in Michigan started settling in the area in the early 1860s and by 1873, African-Americans owned 1,392 acres in the three counties. In the 1860's most of the land in Remus was owned by the Old Settlers. Come learn about the Old Settlers by attending the following two events sponsored by the Anti-Racism Task Force.

Tomorrow! Friday, November 11 at 7pm

Jay Martin, the director of CMU’s Museum of Cultural and Natural History, will give a presentation on the Old Settlers of Michigan in the Museum, Rowe Hall 124. There is free parking available in Lot 14 behind the museum. It will also be available on Zoom.

Saturday, November 12 at 2:30pm:

Diana Green will lead a walking tour of the Morgan West Wheatland Cemetery in Remus. We will meet at the church at 1:45 to carpool, depart at 2:00, walk the guided tour at 2:30, returning by 4:00 to the Fellowship Hall for hot chocolate and reflection.

Give to CMU Public Media, Help the UUFCM!

We are once again collecting for CMU Public Media. In the fall, we pool our resources together in order to purchase air time on CMU Public Radio. Depending on the amount gathered, we get 1-2 ads per week for a good part of the year. Please make your check to “UUFCM,” include in the memo line “for CMU Public Media” and give it to Mary Alsager at church by December 4. A single check for the total collected will be sent to CMU Public Media. Thank you in advance for contributing to this worthy effort – you are appreciated!

Proposed New Principles and Sources

Major Revision of Seven Principles Has Been Drafted
Sign Up to Be Part of Feedback Sessions Nov. 10-14

In a process that has been going on for the past few years, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is revising the part of its bylaws that include the seven principles. The new draft is now available here. It has changed principles to “values and covenant,” and includes the language “Love is the enduring force that holds us together.”

This revision is meaningful to all Unitarian Universalists, as it re-states what we understand to be our commonly held values. All UUs are invited to sign up for the feedback sessions hosted by the committee in charge of these revisions–the current language is a draft. You can sign up for one of the remaining four feedback sessions on the UUA website here.

An alternate UU group (not within UUA) is offering an opportunity to discuss proposed changes:

Open Forum on Proposed Changes to Article II of the UUA Bylaws

On Saturday, November 19 from 12-2pm, the UU Multiracial Unity Action Council will hold, via Zoom, an open discussion on the proposed changes to Article II of the UUA Bylaws, as proposed by the Article II Study Commission. All are welcome to attend and express their views on what they like and dislike about the proposed changes. To register and receive the Zoom codes, send an email to [email protected] no later than Friday, November 18, 10pm.

Path to Membership Workshop - November 19 from 1pm

This workshop is designed for those who want to understand the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this one and a half hour interactive session, we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry. Please contact Laura McBride ([email protected] or 989.772.5512) by the Friday prior to the workshop if you will attend so we may plan accordingly. Join us via Zoom.

Need for Boots!

As we all begin to prepare for the colder/winter season, be aware that the need for boots is great with our homeless/indigent population in Isabella County. If you are planning to replace your old boots with new ones, be sure to donate those used boots to our “Share Your Soles” collection which will be delivered to Clothing, INC for distribution. You can deliver them to our box in the Fellowship Hall.

Native American Heritage Month Events at CMU

November is Native American Heritage month. It is “A time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people." Native American Heritage month also creates a foundation for people to learn about the challenges and struggles that Native peoples have and still face today, both societal and systemic.
